@@glowinTHX I get that but they could brand around that and make Xbox themed cases for example, with disk drives built-in. Backwards compatible gamers are a niche case and I get that but I have a whole physical collection of Xbox games just sitting there. This is in the ideal scenario that they can get an OS off the ground that is Windows based but runs better than other versions of Windows specifically for gaming. I don’t have full confidence in Microsofts ability to do that but I’m cautiously optimistic.

I asked ChaptGPT if it would be legal for MS to let you play PS5 games through Steam on Xbox. There's a lot of reasons why it would be illegal but here is the final statement. " While Microsoft could potentially put Steam on Xbox with a partnership, enabling PS5 games to run on Xbox would almost certainly require Sony's explicit approval and collaboration, which is highly unlikely given the competitive nature of the console market. Any attempt to do this without Sony's consent would likely be illegal."

Xbox OS could be to make windows handhelds more usable. It's been working on some background changes for the windows handhelds for about 6 months. Also, for a while I thought 343 was referencing the 3 successful mainline halo games. Like they were saying they were three for three on success. Never clicked it was guilty spark

I don't know if I'm the only disappointed to the lack of updating to the ergonomics of the Switch 2. I thought that would make it much more comfortable to reach more adults. I hate the small handles of the OG Switch, horrible. I'm sure there is something I missing, but I'm bummed for sure.

MS has a lot of work to do for an solid Xbox OS to run on PC. Steam OS is light years ahead of any of the console front-ends. i'd rather see a straight out pure Xbox OS completely removed from Windows. Windows is simply awfully process hungry and will always hamper gaming performance.

If I could put a gaming focused version of Windows (or any operating system) on my PC, I'd totally go for it. There's way too much bloat in Windows 11. I guess this announcement is more about adding bloat to other devices though rather than removing bloat from Windows.

Handhelds are not the savior. I'm not sure why everyone is excited. It's just another way to access Xbox games and game pass. Handhelds are still niche outside Nintendo Switch. Steamdeck has sold under 5 million since 2022. The Switch 2 will sell that amount in a month.

I want the xbox OS to be built in dual boot so you can have full fledged windows when you need a PC but only the xbox interface when you are gaming. Then all these handhelds would be complete laptop replacements with a doc. And go a step further and make it windows / xbox / steam bootable. One can dream.

In-line thumb sticks are not normal at all. Sony started that crippling gimmick. In the beginning, analog console stick controllers settled with the left thumbstick at top corner left. Sony drugg the left thumb Stick down there in-line making there controller very uncomfortable.

I have 0 interest in an Xbox handheld, or how it works with mobile or on PC. What I would like is to be able to use the browser on my Xbox to watch youtube, twitch and whatever else and not have it collapse after an hour or so, or not be able to handle two tabs being open at the same time. If they can improve that experience that would be great.

Xbox has an uphill battle to try and compete with steam. Theyre late to the market with a handheld and theyre late with an os. theyre trying to make a handheld pc and compete with the pc gaming arena thats owned by valve. What could possibly convince people who have a decades worth of a steam library to give that up and use the xbox os and switch to game pass and buy a handheld that would presumably prohibit the use of steam? If they allow steam to be used on their new device theyd have to price the handhelds to make a profit off them like msi and asus . And at that point whos buying that?

A new xbox OS has been needed for AWHILE. I dont know how it changed since the xbox one but the xbox one OS is complete crap. It's slow to boot, has random glitches and slowdowns. Store can take take awhile too.

The xbox currently is no different than a PC using a version of Windows 'under the hood' of the xbox OS / UI. You use your TV as the monitor and controller as your keyboard and mouse. If Microsoft released the xbox OS as a standalone you could turn any PC into a 'console' if you choose. Just put the desktop tower where your console used to be.

@HarryBalszak2K They absolutely can. If their platform can be used as a PC, then it's up to the discretion of the buyer as to how they will use that product. Sony wouldn't be able to do anything about it. I have both consoles, so I have no allegiance to either, but if Microsoft does something like this, they win, and so will the consumer, especially if they can also run steam.

You guys and your handhelds. Both PlayStation and Xbox are coming to the game late. You all can say oh it have this and that but till they show the dam thing and what it does then it’s all rumors which mean nothing. Look Xbox has windows launcher that’s a given but steam deck doesn’t run windows so good does it. Why does new Xbox handheld having windows on it sound so good to me it just make the price of memory stick go up like 1tb $200. This is coming from guy who got one for steam deck. The bs I keep hearing is you can play PlayStation games that are pc. Well who to say that’s true either. PlayStation makes deal with epic and steam if they go in and say hey we don’t want the new Xbox handheld to get our games from epic or steam they can just make it were they don’t and still sale them on epic and steam. It all contracts they do I’m sure if something like that happened they have to write up a new contract epic and steam or Rick lawsuit.

Plus, Microsoft has the benefit of licensing the tailored OS to other OEMs and grow its services etc. This is what Steam has just done for Lenovo handheld. SteamOS only has Steam and some pc players will want an OS with Gamepass & other gaming platforms

I think you are looking at Xbox handheld as a game console similar to the switch. It'll be more like the Legion go. A handheld pc that runs full windows. There's nothing Sony can do to block that. I have steam Sony games on my Legion Go. You'd have to block all PCs that have Windows OS Sony games in order to do that. Then there's no point to releasing on pc.

Microsoft will almost certainly still stick around as a hybrid platform holder that continues to make consoles with its existing smaller but loyal 30+ million console userbase. And carve out a separate Cloud & Pc gamepass consumerbase. GeforceNow had 20 million subscribers in 2022 (and has likely grown a bit). No reason MS can't grow a good Xcloud userbase globally. Consoles prices are a big barrier to entry in some countries.
