+GaratghDeloi going off a rather poor luck lp i'm watching, nobody would be motor-boating very long... the constriction damage is 2 per turn, and soldiers start with 4-5 health. even if they were at full health a unit's only gonna last 2-3 turns, maybe a little longer with upgrades. plus constricting snakes are instinctively going to keep squeezing until the prey is dead on fear of retaliation, i would assume alien snakes would feel the same, female issues or not.

Yahtzee has a point about the alien soldiers. I would think the game would be much more compelling if your early-on enemies were in fact, other humans who bought the alien propaganda of their own free will. Another compelling game mechanic would be the danger of recruiting spies and traitors into your own ranks. You'd have to use intel to vet possible recruits and ward off internal sabotage attempts.

You make a good point. Another missed opportunity, in my opinion, is the lack of utilization of captured soldiers. Sure you can rescue them later on, but think of all the possibilities that could have been. What if a captured soldier was interrogated, and could potentially prompt a base defense mission if successfully coerced? Or what if the captured soldier was indoctrinated into Advent, and then turned into some sort of super, boss alien monster?

If you pay attention to the first hour, you did. There is a cutscenes that shows footage from EU with something like "they were running thousands of wargame simulations using your brain", hence the multiple successful playthroughs being nullified in the canon.

The game actually (partially) explains some of the problems you point out. Yes, the aliens warn each other when you break concealment: they are psionically linked to each other, including the exalt. I'm told that the last few missions explain why people readily accepted the space nazis monsters as their new overlords (aside from the snaketits). As for the resistance doing fuck-all until The Commandy One is released from suspended animation, well, it's because The Commandy One is The One. To the point that the aliens themselves were using his brain to make strategy plans (basically you spent twenty years playing XCOM:EU while the ancient ethereals were taking notes and using the results to teach their entire army how to behave. That might also explains a lot of things.) And all the enemies are different from the first installation. The sectoids for example are half-human now. So you do have to research them all over again, even if the archives of XCOM weren't destroyed when the aliens took over. For the helicarriers and the suspicious lack of UFOs however, I've got nothing.

Your job is to prevent the aliens from reaching Firebrand and to stop the beacon inside the UFO from sending more troops. after that then you will have to hold your ground until the Avenger comes to pick uo the skyranger.

Also there are UFO landings you can check out in the later stages of the game. Do not bother will killing the beacon, there is usually a sectopod inside the UFO and your chance of revealing it is quite big.

The concealment makes no sense, there is some gameplay-story segregation, and the percentage chances are more than a little annoying. Still, I think XCOM 2 is the better game (at least in my opinion) because it manages to avoid being unnecessarily punishing and have some more interesting enemies.

You shouldn't treat a review as a final say on if you will enjoy a game. Go find a lets play or an hour of uncut footage of the game to see if it would interest you. Don't use reviews or trailers or such as a decision maker. It was a lot better when you could get a demo of a game to play for a few hours to see if the gameplay was what you wanted, rather than the current bullshots the industry gives.

Coffee Break Hero - By "rouge" did you mean "rogue", and by "lite" did you mean "like" (i.e., a game that plays like Rogue)? Or is "low-calorie makeup" a new genre? ;-) Sadly, I suspect you won't see any official patch to fix XCOM 2's bugs (except possibly crash bugs). Firaxis is too busy working on (paid) "expansions". Some of the bugs probably will be fixed when the Long War guys release their big mod, but some things are just hard-coded and impossible to fix by modders, same as with the first game. In fact, a lot of bugs are _exactly_ identical to ones in Firaxis' first XCOM, so they're probably just reusing most of the code (with updated graphics). Welcome to AAA game publishing in 2016: release before it's ready, let modders (try to) fix your bugs for free, and then milk more money out of early adopters with paid DLC. I guess Firaxis is learning from Bethesda. :-P IMO, Long War Studios should get together with Goldhawk Interactive (and possibly Julian Gollop, who is making games again) and just put their effort into Xenonauts 2, instead of trying to fix Firaxis' screw-ups.

Jacek N I know this is late, but the answer is... gameplay. The problem is in later missions you can be facing down 30 aliens+. If every single pod responded immediately you would be overwhelmed extremely quickly. LW2 “fixes” this in some way by actually making nearby pods respond, but not all of them.

I'm still convinced that XCOM2 is as perfect as a sequel as it can get. It's the same, which is what we want, but from a complete different angle. In XCOM2 you're now doing what the aliens were doing, you're even being hunted down by an UFO. So it's not sloppy at all in that regard, there's a clear idea for the sequel to exist and I love it. Plus the whole "yo the aliens took over" is super interesting. However especially the WotC does feel really incomplete. I want more story and worldbuilding of this dystopia. And yeah, going to megacities and having to fight normal humans who believe in ADVENT's lies would have been cool, because then we'd be the one doing the terror missions, even if involuntarily. Flip the sides completely. As for the story, I'm okay with it being all over the place. I just want more of it.

I think the first point Yahtzee made was easily explained. It's the tutorial mission, and yeah, you are still giving the orders, but your orders have been pre-determined. You can't change from the scripted set of orders because you, the Commander, aren't actually giving the orders, you're in the enemy's stasis vault.

+Inventor Raccoon I think his point was once they DO know you are around, any and all stealth is lost..even if your guys have not been seen by the next group, the next group upon hearing ONE noise or seeing ONE Soldier...immediately know where ALL your soldiers are hiding anywhere on the map. and also they have Ears? are they also able to see through walls? once they "know" you are there you literally cannot hide anywhere to surprise the next group as the run over to help.

To be fair, whilst these are fair complaints to an extent, the game is a lot better than this review would have you believe. The learning curve is a lot steeper over the previous game, and the bugs are annoying, but neither are deal breakers. I played X-Com 2 start to finish twice in a row, immediately. I had a blast. It's not as polished in some ways as the first game but it's much more complex and unpredictable. I'm looking forward to seeing what DLC they put together, if any of it is as good as Enemy Within was then I'm going to be starting it up again in no time.

I think what worked for XCOM: Enemy Unknown was that they took the old PC games and completely overhauled the interface and gameplay to work on a console. XCOM 2 brought it back to the PC but did nothing to smooth the transition back.

As someone who loved the first xcom, and loved this one, this is all very true! and funny of coarse! The melee attacks miss WAY to damn much, and the timers feel so cheesy and awkward and sometimes aren't even long enough for the mission, forcing you to just cancel it and evac your guys early just so they aren't captured.

To be fair at 3:55 ZeroPunctuation, they rigged their own stuff to blow because the Resistance sabotaged the transport train they were using, and they don't want it to fall into enemy hands. They're guarding the item so that you can't get your clammy hands on it and defuse the explosive because they expect XCOM to come around and try to salvage the stuff.
