Long War is one of the reasons that PC will always be superior to consoles. Its like completely another game, that can kick your ass even if you were a vanilla Xcom veteran

The better way to say that is that vanilla was too easy and exploitable. Long War teaches you how to play it right and give it respect the way the original wasn't designed to demand. If you play Long War like you would the original whether vanilla or Enemy Within it's probably going to kick your ass on any difficulty after a few months at max. This means less exploits of researchers/scientists, lack of spam for troop training, resource management on the field and in the grand-scheme, the far greater need for captives, research planning, grand-scheme planning, troop builds(skill abuse and relearning quite a few), troop management on the field, explosive/gear usage, shiv usage, satellite deployment styles, why you need to kill EXALT quickly, why you need to win the air-war, playing every goddamn mission, playing terror missions RIGHT, base-defense, learning how to take on 6 times your size early and efficiently, alien research, alien leaders, and higher spawns for all.ALSO how to stay sane on not only the final missions, chrysalids (holy fuck you will cry at best in some cases if you are a perfectionist), and trying to take out some missions that are so far stacked against you you will once again... cry... and the very common regeneration mechanic. Well I didn't name it all but this should convince you of at least one thing. It's a lot of things to learn/relearn.

It seems that the mistake a lot of people are making when doing LPs of Long War is mistaking the AP grenade for a completely new item, and it really isn't, it is just a namechange from the spike grenade in the base game.

I was playing through my campaign that's I believe is around October at this point. I damaged a Raider-class UFO to the point that it landed. Being a Medium UFO, I thought that it must be easier than the March Harvester, June Harvester and August Terror Ship I plowed through (after they landed) without anyone dying (one sniper got knocked unconscious but Jon Daham, my Medic, stabilized her. We'd not even entered the Terror Ship yet.). Anyway, the UFO was very close to the Skyranger. I advanced along with my 7 L/CPLs and 1 SGT as the UFO loomed on the horizon. I heard the sound of Mutons, a faint Cyberdisk and the expected Outsider sound, as well as one I'd never heard before. As my Scout inched ever closer to the UFO, grabbing 7 meld from a canister, 5 of the scariest aliens I'd ever seen burst out, backed up by familiar, much squishier, Mutons. My rocketeer immediately readied his rocket, firing it directly into crowd, killing nothing but damaging the pack well enough I felt confident in my abilities to shoot them up, but the 5 new creatures caused my Rocketeer to panic as they ran forwards, nearly trampling my scout in the process. Naturally, she hauled back for the nearest cover but was gunned down by Mutons. Nearly dead, she crawled behind a fallen tree as the rest of the squad began gunning down Mutons. The Scout ended up bleeding out after a lucky Muton shot hit her in cover and our Rocketeer avoided the same fate by one turn. The Sniper took pretty much every kill as she was the only one to be at full health (Red Fog made it nearly impossible to survive this mission). After the Berserkers had fallen a Cyberdisc emerged and wrecked all our cover with a grenade but fell to our last rocket and some gunner fire. The Outsiders joined the party (only two, thank RNJesus) and got critted by a flanking gunner and our Sniper. Hardest mission I've ever done in XCOM, Berserkers really are dangerous. Turns out I agroed the 4 pods of enemies at once, as they were all packed inside (outsiders, Mutons and berserkers x2, and Cyberdisc and 2 Drones. Might've also been a Seeker pod in there that got killed by the rocket.)

Luckily for me they were quite hesitant to rush me... 5 Thin Men, I moved to engage and activated 2XSectoid, 1 Mechtoid and Sectoid Cmdr pod, also a 5x drone pod. Next Alien term a 4x Muton Pod patrols into the melee....and last 2 Thin man seems to activate the 4 floaters in the UFO, I was very very lucky and managed to not lose a trooper....the 'only' 2 outsiders were a bit of an anti-climax. First mission to see Mechtoid, Beserker and Sectoid Cmdr....like an early Xmas surprise!!!! NOW it gets very hard

Big reason i don't want to play this mod is the 6 to 12 person squad. I really don't like taking 5 minutes per turn. Plus i like that with a smaller squad you get more invested in every member.

the base game has you become more invested in your soldiers status and attachment to them, but long war needs you to leave that emotional attachment behind and manage an army. you are a commander after all...

It's really awesome to see how many ideas from this mod were taken and put into xcom 2, such things as armor and a few of the special items like special grenades. I like to think the developers saw good ideas and were humble enough to recognize them and pu them in the sequel

@@dnw009 Maybe, but I did the whole one squad type game, if you lose your A-team and you never leveled up a B-team you are pretty much toast. My most recent play (original version) I had to level up several teams while my A-team were out of action with injuries. It goes well, because when I lose guys it's less of a tactical hit.

Acid actually only causes the soldier to lose health when they perform an action that isn't hunkering down; this is particularly devistating against soldiers that can get free moves or rely on moving twice. Also, the devs have posted a hotfix on the Nexus forums regarding the "no armour health" where you need to download and replace a file, you don't need to uninstall the mod, simply copy-paste the file

EnterElysium All units give a number of meld, with robotic units giving a bit more. These numbers are then rounded down to give you your meld count. Meld canister yields are dependent on the Alien's resources. Alien resources are restocked when the transport ship lands.

Gen0Granger09 I believe the Meld given is one Meld per five aliens, but the yield also differs per alien. It's 0.3 Meld per Floater, 0.5 for Heavy Floaters and 2 per Mechtoid. Meld amounts per Meld container also increase per month to the point where it is possiblt to obtain 15 Meld per container (though I play with the Not-so-Long-War second wave installed)

mrs0019 the amount of meld you get off missions is more about how well the aliens are doing. if you're facerolling them repeatedly, you're gonna get a lot less meld per mission.

Big fan of XCOM. In relation to long war, I've seen what you have to do to install this mod, what a nightmare, you'd thought you didn't need a degree in computer sciences to utilize this mod? Press a button and it should do everything for you!

I played so much of XCOM and I was so interested until I saw them panicking like crazy. Soldiers panicking is the one solitary thing I absolutely hate. The concept isn't even bad, but the execution needs tweaking. When a Berserker Muton comes out of the crashed spacecraft, its fair for my pointman to panic. I don't think my pointman should exercise that panic by turning around and shooting at my sniper. I think I'll give it a shot, but I won't be surprised if I find myself save-scumming because my people keep shooting each other even without being mind-controlled.

I have played the orignal XCOM gameand it was amazingly hard, i am nearly finishing the base game of Enemy Unknown and was recognmended this for Enemy Within! I think I will try this out, looks a lot better and I hated having to pick out of three countries... great video!

This mod changed so much of my playstyle. I never used to use scopes, but now they're my most needed resource. I never used to use pheonix or laser cannons. Now, however, I'm taking down abductors just to fund my next few purchases. I used to meticulously complete every mission that went my way, but now I wait and bide my time, hoping against hope that I don't have to fend off a terror crew. Seriously, this mod will change (and end) the lives of your troops.

If you're planning on continuing with the Long War mod, I feel the need to give you a few strategic pointers. For your roster had a lot of wounded soldiers in them and you're playing a low difficulty, which shouldn't happen in these early months 1) designate 1 soldier as your "point man" (typically someone with high mobility). this soldier should be the furthest moving soldier, if you make contact, use everyone else to react how you want them/ if you don't make contact. have everyone else follow in the EXACT footsteps of the point man, but keep them behind. this way you ensure that you make contact on your first move which is the only way you want to make contact in this game. (Note: it's ok to end a turn with soldiers out of cover before you make contact, because there are no aliens to kill you :D) 2) Stealth is you friend when it comes to outsiders, outsiders are not to bad in this game on small / medium UFO's if you make contact correctly, the way to do this is using stealth and approaching the cockpit (where the Outsider typically is) using concealment (meaning staying out of line of sight). you can do this by either a door breach or if the door has been opened use the UFO wall to stay hidden until you're up close and personal. And to Clarify, when you were trying to use the AP grenades and your range was really crap, that's because your guys were still under the acid status... acid reduces grenade throwing range and soldiers effectiveness overall... in this case I actually say hunkering down is better to do because Acid where's off faster by doing this. It's better in my opinion to keep soldiers alive and safe than taking a really poor percentage shot at the cost of health. You can find out whether or not your guys are acid'd by pressing the "F1" key when you have them selected

I actually loved the SHIVs in Enemy Within. The hover SHIVs were so versatile and above all, actually expendable. Mechs, on the other hand, I just felt their accuracy was far too poor to justify the insane cost in meld and money.

We are now on ver 14.x This mod REALLY did improve what was already a great game. I was a little hesitant at first, but the changes were nothing but gratifying. I've managed to win XCOM EW on Classic Ironman, so I'm not being torn to shreds ...yet. The research and logistic formula changes are what have me concerned, because I don't quite know what to expect with these long intervals. The tactical combat really seems more protracted and challenging. Ignore proper use of cover at your peril. This is no run & gun environment. In my judgement this mod is very worthwhile for those that already enjoy the game.

I need this ;w; I honestly hate the panic mechanic in the game. It makes me feel as if the game will be long over before it gets started when the council members leave (like why would you leave the last line of defense against ALIENS). So basically I've been getting bent out of shape thinking of how to rack up the satilites and uplinks to keep a controlled area

Well the Original XCOM explains it better why countries are leaving, its not because of the countries Panic, but more of the Aliens sending envoy ships with ethereals to infiltrate and run Diplomacy in those countries to sign pacts with them, and thats what Long war in General aims for: Integrating the good Design aspects of Ufo Defense in the Reboot

I know you said it was automatic but I'd personally prefer to organize my squads by color for each mission type for this, since it's going to sort of be more team based now and you know the layout of what you're going in to.

***** they don't. you need Outsider shards for Skeleton keys to get into the alien bases. quite handy if you lost a bunch of countries and want to nail multiple bases in succession (just took back Africa with South Africa followed by Nigeria! :D ..now for the Western Hemisphere... )

Other than the fact my laptop can't run the game I only find 2 things really wrong with the mod the first is the sectoid mind link thing being removed is a bad idea and the second is the acid triggers the addition of movement triggers isn't a bad idea but having it trigger on almost every action is (firing the weapon mostly) a very bad idea.

I actually like the acid a lot more then poison, its a lot fairer whereas poison was an unavoidable, instant-hit, AoE, armour ignoring, free damage. Acid is effectively a lock-down ability making you resort to hunker down. I do not like that it triggers on panic though as this can cause you to move, take a damage, and then panic taking another damage. Possibly a game engine limitation though.

True but I would prefer to fight back (if possible) than hide just more my style maybe a major aim penalty basically reducing it to around a 1% chance almost every time (effectively doing the same thing in a less obvious way) but that's just me.

The change made to the abductions seems stupid to me. The old abductions were great because you had to prioritise one country over two others and you also had to look for your own interest as in which mission do you want to take based on the difficulty and based on whether or not you needed the resource reward.

I was foolish enough to install beta 10. It screwed me over on the first exalt mission, keeps crashing. And despite posting on their stupid forum, nobody answers my question. So I thought I'd ask here instead. Should I update or is there some way to fix 10? I don't really feel like starting all over again, I'm assuming if I update I won't be able to use my old saves? Has anyone finished a game on beta 11 or upwards? If I do update I want a stable version that I can play to the end.

You start the game with 6 guys max, you can get up to 8 max once you have enough ranked operatives and they can go on most normal missions with squad upgrades from the officer training school, you get 4 guys max during covert extractions for exalt missions, you can have 8 guys during covert ops defend missions against exalt, you get 6 guys max during any base attack defense missions plus XCOM base personal, you can get 12 guys if you purchase the super skyranger upgrade but can only use all 12 when you A. Assault Alien Bases or B.you assault the Temple Ship. Apparently though later on as the beta updates they might make it up to 8 guys start out, 10 guys with officer school upgrades, 6 during covert ops extractions, 12 during covert ops defend missions and XCOM base attacks but this hasnt been confirmed though but I hope its true. What I really want is shorter fatigue and wounds time still long but shorter and to be able to have 12 guys on all missions if you want to.

Xenonauts is the way to get a good and somewhat expanded version of the original X-COM with semi-modern graphics and UI, while Long War tries to build a closer spiritual successor up on EW. IMHO if you love X-COM, you should get both.

Thaeos You remember when you could shoot rockets through walls on a regular basis in Enemy Unknown? The enemies can do basically that with astonishing regularity depending on where you move in Xenonauts.

Venomine95 You could get away with not losing men on normal difficulty and maybe even some second wave options, or simply save scumming. But you should get it for all the great features it adds to the game not the difficulty.

First off I'd like to know if (and how) to get this on Steam, and whether it would upset Valve or Firaxis, etcetera, etcetera. From what I'm aware, the game doesn't have Workshop support and I've never tried this before. Secondly, I'd like to know if this is available for use on Apple, and before people say get a PC and stuff, have you ever heard of the term "Opinion"? I've always loved the XCOM series and I'm always having fun with my army of grunts who I mercilessly throw to their doo- I mean who I lovingly coddle and always set on Overwatch. So if anyone could help me with my queries, many thanks to them!

Alexander Scarbrough You can pick up Long War here: nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/88/? The current version is Beta 15d2, although you can pick up b15e at the bottom which is still in testing. There is no issue as far as upsetting anyone, Beaglerush plays with the Long War mod on Firaxis' twitch channel every Tuesday. Yes, you can play this on a Mac.

i don't feel fun or challeged play it, i feel more like frustrating and hesitant when i play it. Don't get me wrong, i love challeging games like Darkest Dungeon, but that is the point: there is a line from hard to frustrating and long war is too far. One of the first problem is xcom itself: to gain special move you should level up your character, that's said if you loose a man that's mean you should retrain a rookie. (thing that lw2 made a lot easier) In xcom is annoyng, in long war can made you loose cause you need quite all special move that you can get. Then also too much and too strong enemies, that make you play very slowly and carefull possible exploiting the game to not loose nobody, or else. Then off course air combat and terror mission. In long war saving civs in a terror mission is more important than vanilla any civs killed means one panic point to that country. And with all i sayed before even the long play is compromise. To prevent this you offcourse need air supremacy, but we are playing a mod of xcom, and that air supremacy minigame is made a lot harder with less interactive so is just unfair.

Does Long War fix any of the horrible problems with the game's mechanics, such as seeing through walls? I want to try it after I finish the playthrough I'm on. Hearing you say you lost an entire squad makes me want to see if I can deal with that but usually I restart. I have a pretty deep roster this time though. I mostly play non-iron man and save at the start of the mission so I have to redo the whole thing if I want to restart. I don't want to save scum every turn. I only beat Ironman once on Classic.

You might like LW, because the fatigue system forces you to have more than just one squad, so losing a mission won't fuck you over too much. Just remember that you can retreat, you won't get that big a punishment for avoiding missions.

Mind Web not only that, but the amount a soldier will have to spent on recuperating grows heavily with every gene-mod and/or PSI ability s/he has, so your end game super-soldiers should be used pretty sparely.

Mind Web I think your kinda lying there though. You lose your A team squad early game it's gonna be quite hard to replace them if not impossible, especially if your on high/decent difficulty.

Some nice touches in this mod, but way too difficult - even on the "normal" difficulty level. I'll try playing it again once the modding team provide a sane version that's playable by people who don't have to resort to cheating via save games.

Forensicman102 Give it a try now you can change many things via a texteditor in the game files. But still dont expect to rush every missions and win the game with a single squad.

LordOfGilneas It used to not require it but all the newer versions are now EW only. Recommend picking it up, it's on sale fairly often. And I have two series's of it for your delight!

when i played xcom my main charector wss so bad ass that i only send him the the missions btw it was a cloak armour sniper with the laser sniper and other little enhanctments from 1st mission all the way to the end one when he died becouse of a cutscene ... anyway he was the best suggest you try it

I dont agree with Fatigue..Soldiers train to be able to stay out in the field for daysd on end.. More so with special ops.. Sleep every other day, minimal eating, proper breathing, and hydration etc.. They wouldnt need a week+ r&r because of some minor incursion. Now, a few days out in the field, sure.. But these missions are obviously quick in/out missions, as should be.. Short of some "Blackhoawk Down" scenario, i cant see the need for fatigue.

RolfCJ true that. However the current Fatigue system is a result of a compromise between realism, devs' vision of good gameplay and restrictions of X-COM's engine.

4. Normal, Classic, Brutal, Impossible. It's possible to tweak the difficulty through second wave options and ini tweaking. And the there are sub-mods that lower the difficulty. Long War is only as hard as you wish it to be.

that is kinda stupid like who the fuck needs 5 days of rest. but it's necessar to create the need of many soldiers but if they were realistic they would need psychological trauma aid and shit :D like everytime one sees his friend die he needs a psychotherapist. and if they are traumatized too much they can kill themselves in the base.

3 days to "rest" might seem a little stupid, but the system itself is pretty good.In the vanilla you pretty much only had one really badass squad, they get to max level pretty fast. Here you need to have at least 40-50 soldiers and even if i can take my A team on a mission i usually only take 1-2 then some medium soldiers and some rookies so they can get a level.

Sly Devil realism vs game difficulty. It basicly forces you to work more on all your units rather than focussing on your one A team. Which overall makes it alot more interesting. KageRyuuUji to pass up long war just for the fatigue is stupid, it adds to much other stuff to simply push it aside for a silly reason like that. Unless you can't handle the difficulty ofcourse... Don't take offense at that assumption just speculating on your reasoning.
