not trying to initiate serious debate but I must say that WC1 had more atmospheric and haunting soundtracks to my ear :P WC2 was still exceptionally good though!

i wouldn't say haunting, because wc1 was more "dark" than anything else, however it is interesting to see how they got away from the dark fantasy warhammer aesthetic and chose a more cartoony unique approach in wc2 which is what made warcraft what it is today. He made more catchy songs though and i like wc2 music more anyway, and his work on starcraft was excellent too, so i think it was a good change.

The Warcraft 2 OST still stands as one of my favourite soundtracks of all time, however it is sorely missing HUMANS 2. That one is simply amazing. You would expect it to be an orc track, it's so wonderfully sinister :)

Glenn Stafford tells me that he didn't use any Warcraft 1 themes in Warcraft 2 except this... "The only piece [from Warcraft 1] I was aware of that was in War 2 (maybe it was Dark Portal?), a silly easter egg audio track “Disco Warcraft” (aka “I’m a Medieval Man”, or whatever the audio file was named), which has portions of Greg’s WC1 Human 1 piece rearranged in a disco style."

Thank you. Greg Alper and I released the soundtrack less than two years ago. Sadly, even if the original composer releases an official version, many times it gets swallowed out of the searches because of all the inferior unofficial versions have been around for much longer. Greg Alper did an official orchestrated version of one of his WC1 themes that he's had up since 2010, and it only received less than 200 for almost 10 years. We are on here, listening to the old OST in remembrance. Us OG fanatics are probably just burnt out now. I never could keep up with WoW after Wrath, and Blizz's recent abomination with War3 Reforged broke everyone's trust. Here's to hoping a War4 might happen but I highly doubt it...

The first one! I bought it on GOG a couple of months ago and when I played through it it was the "CD music" that played in the background, which is very good as well, but the OPL3 just fits so well with the murky dark green and brown dungeon feeling I get from this game.

Do you know if any other classical themes were borrowed? (I can ask Greg myself later.) I know that the design team originally wanted to use "Mars" for the introduction theme, but Greg composed something unique for it -- and you can clearly hear the inspiration.

Glenn says, "Thinking back here’s what I remember more specifically about the War1 intro, in case that sparks more memories: We had asked Greg for something in the vein of The Planets (specifically “Mars, Bringer of War” of course) which Allen Adham (then Blizzard’s President) was pushing for. At one point Allen even wanted us to look into licensing The Planets music, but we talked him out of that. Also I have a memory of wanting to compose at least something for War1 myself, but Morhaime kept insisting I was too busy on our other projects (he was right)." Greg Alper's reply, "Assuming Mike mentioned the Planets to me, the intro is exactly what I would have written. The compositional approach of the intro is aligned with pieces like human death. The intro heavily alludes to Mars, Bringer of War - a piece I studied in great detail and influenced other pieces I’ve written. Human Death alludes to Symphony Fantastique by Berlioz. Reference the attached mp3 of "War and Peace" with Orchestra. I also remember Mike saying Glenn was too busy with other projects."

Is there any reason to have WC2 recorded with a real SC-55? The official version appearing on the CD-DA audio is a recording which is a combination of the best instruments from SC-55 + SC-88. Not all the midi tracks for WC2 have been released to the public either, only an incomplete collection. (Also, I don't currently have permission to post the WC2 soundtrack even in its CD-DA form. But that may change in the future.)
