The reason you hear the flute being so prominent in 3's version is because the flute holds a lot of sentimental value to the games themes, so if you ever look at more Xenoblade 3 stuff, you'll hear a lot of flute.

It's also a common instrument in 3. Which they use so damn well
@scubajho

Don't forget that, for XC3, most of the flute work is performed on custom flutes made to match the protagonists' instruments and have some non-standard tones/sounds. The animators also took the time to match the fingering of the musicians in scenes where the protagonists are playing. Idk what the budget is for music alone in the Xeno games, but it's got to be massive.
@Cool-Vest
@Cool-Vest Жыл бұрын
That song also uses the metal guitars from Xeno 1 and the jazz and violins from Xeno 2, while still having the flutes, which are new. Basically summarizing the 3rd game: Taking heavy world building elements from the first two games while also having an identity of its own. This is also seen in the combat, which uses a clever mix of the timer cooldowns from 1 and the auto-attack dependent cooldowns from 2, which can then be fused. There's also the new things.

Toward the start of the game, the first 10 seconds of this song become your cue to run for dear life before the giant level 81 gorilla that was lurking just out of sight ganks you. The next minute of the song represents your courage to challenge this fearsome foe despite the odds. The second half of the song is your triumph in managing to stay alive that long, or perhaps even turn the tide of battle in your favor. Or it's the theme of nearly getting your ass handed to you by a bunny in the first area that was a little bigger than the others...

Don't worry, no spoilers here, these are the Unique Monster's themes in XC1 and XC3, XC2 has one too called You Will Recall Our Names. Unique Monsters are a collection of extremely strong monsters from each species, they have their own names, hence "names" being part of the titles of these tracks.

Immovable Gonzalez is a staple. Same with Territorial Rotbart. They're optional mini-bosses that can offer quite the challenge. Some are pretty easy. Some are off the beaten path. And some (the aforementioned Territorial Rotbart) will chase you around the first area in the game when they are a higher level than the final boss.

What I like most about this song is that it has a story arc. The first couple of seconds is chaos and panic. This song only plays during really dangerous optional boss encounters and certain story beats so that tracks. Then it transitions and you're in the thick of it, just trying to survive. Then it changes again to the call and response section, things are starting to turn around you're hanging in there as it builds to the climax. It's our turn to kick some ass, this is a real fight that you have a chance to win and the song is celebrating it. Ah but it's not over yet, so we have the breakdown that transitions back to the loop, starting it all over again

You Will Know Our Names - Finale has quickly become my favourite of the unique monster themes, due to the flute use and the more epic climax version, that kicks in when the monster is on low health. I think all of the You Will X Our Names tracks from the whole series are composed by Kenji Hiramatsu, for me him and ACE+ are the definitive "sound of Xenoblade" with the guitars and violins and jazz fusion, while Mitsuda tends to do more emotional pieces like A Moment Of Eternity, a song that will destroy your heart with full context.

The reason that the song from XC3 sounded like a different song than that of XC1 and DE is that it is a different song. DE's is a remastered version of XC1's, so in that case it is the same song, but the one in XC3 is more of a callback namewise and is its own song. XC2 also has its own version of these songs, being titled You Will Recall Our Names. These songs are all the themes for the unique monster fights, which are named monsters much stronger than normal.

FINALLY. THIS IS GONNA BE GOOD. The original is certainly my favourite, I feel the DE version softens it a little too much with the brass. The original is just pure thrash adrenaline and scares the crap out of me when I'm wondering the world and it starts blaring. Finale is also incredible, but doesn't quite give me the same rush.
@thenonexistinghero
@thenonexistinghero Жыл бұрын
Same. XC3 is mostly a bit tamer. And the DE in general does sound a bit softer than the original. For most songs, I prefer the original because the roughness just adds to the feel, IMO. They just scrubbed almost all of that away in most of the DE songs and even when they go harder in some ways, it's still present throughout the whole song so it feels like they don't go as hard.
@somethin7020
@somethin7020 Жыл бұрын
@@thenonexistinghero To me while I can see xc3's being more tame because of the much clearer mixing, to me it feels a lot more bombastic because of the sheer amount of instruments being used. I don't know, I might be in the minority as having the 3rd one be my favorite. I think it's the most impressive in it's composition due to all of the different sections as well as having a huge variety of different instruments. Though if we want to go with songs that have an immediate impact that go really hard, I think the moebius battle theme for me is on the top.
@thenonexistinghero
@thenonexistinghero Жыл бұрын
@@somethin7020 I think with XC3 they became all too aware of how much Xenoblade's soundtracks were praised and I feel like the result is one that gives me the feel of something that's 'tryhard' or somewhat artificial. The first game had a very unique sounding soundtrack. Then with Xenoblade Chronicles X, the soundtrack was its own entire thing as well. After that, with 2 and 3... they tried go for a somewhat similar of reminiscent feel to the first game in regards of the soundtrack. And while they do some things much better as in a 'improve on what the original one had', I think it does just as many things that also detract from the overal experience and take away from the individual game's identity. Though for XC3 I do suppose the soundtrack is its best element. The story is a complete mess and I don't think it does its characters proper justice, the villains are the worst in the series by far and the combat is heavily simplified because they decided a quantity of millions of things happening was more important than quality & depth (and making it as deep as the other games' combat systems wouldn't work with so much crap going on to pay attention to).
@somethin7020

@@thenonexistingheroI totally feel the opposite about everything you said about 3. I think the combat can be way more engaging than 1 or 2 bc you can choose from so many different classes and arts at any time and switch characters whenever. Although I do still miss the individuality and sheer amount of arts at once from 1 and the blade special and orb system from 2. And the characters themselves feel like the most fleshed out main party we’ve had by far. Every character gets to be important, whereas in 1 or 2, some characters get their little arcs and then they’re just commenting on what is happening otherwise

You WIll Know Our Names, You Will Recall Our Names, and You Will Know Our Names (Finale) share a naming convention and are all used in the same context in-game (they play when fighting unique named monsters, hence the titles of the songs) but they're definitely distinct individual songs that just kind of share a common theme and build off one another. They aren't really the same song through the series but they share the same feel

Re your observation on fanservice: Every Xenoblade game has a theme like this for Unique Monsters, 3's is called Finale because it's the conclusion of the trilogy. 2 has its own spin, and X does something wildly different. YWKON is such an iconic track, the original/DE one always holds a special place in my heart after I first played the first Xenoblade game, but the other two, from XC2 and XC3, are phenomenal as well and I think work perfectly in context of their games and as ways to pay homage to the first song that started it all. I find myself liking the one from XC1 the most too, but whether I prefer the original composition or the DE one entirely depending on my mood. Like you said, one was more thrash and the other a bit more hopeful. Hearing the new version was a blast though, such a wonderful experience after 10 years with the Wii one. It's amazing to be able to see you finally react to this song too! Ever since I saw your Mechanical Rhythm (I think that was the one you said was in your top 10) reaction I was wondering when this one would come along. I know you said you weren't planning on playing it, but if you ever find yourself second guessing it I highly recommend giving XCDE a shot, it's more than worth it.

If the other highly requested one you mentioned is Engage the Enemy, I would propose you do something similar to this 3-for-1 breakdown with Engage the Enemy, Counterattack from XC2, and Weight of Life from XC3. Heh. One of the best OSTs I've ever heard. One of the things I love about this one is how it became synonymous for "RUN!", because players knew right away, especially early game, that they were screwed and if they didn't know, they were definitively going to. Now I have the original game and yeah... I also became a bit afraid to hear this music since it meant a unique monster, which are insanely high level, is attacking me. So yeah, a great OST, but one not heard as often as one would like in the game which is why I'm grateful it can be found here in YT.

The one from three features prominent use of duet flutes because two of the game's main protagonists have flutes - at the start of the game their job is somthing called an "Offseer", a person with a duty to send off the spirits of the fallen after a battle by playing a flute. As such, solo and duet flutes are leading instruments across much of the soundtrack.

One is this song, and another one is "Inevitable Struggle" from zero no kiseki (falcom). There are like thousands votes casted for the osts, so it's pretty convincing.

Ooh, I haven't watched this one yet but I know this will be good. Also, You Will Recall Our Names from XBC2 is part of the trilogy of songs, would highly recommend checking that one out too. Aaaalso, Xenoblade 3 battle songs have variation sections that are sometimes entirely different files in the game that not every video includes together. This is because the songs change as you fight. Like if the boss starts to get low on HP or is just about to die, or some fights have a "sad" version etc... For You Will Know Our Names Finale, look for a video that includes the "climax" version, you won't regret it :D (again, video hasn't premiered yet, maybe you already did I dunno lol)

This song in a nutshell: -Trash some mobs on a plain. -The song suddenly starts. -Look around and see that huge level 81 ape approaching from behind. -Try to run away. -Get trashed in one hit. True story for at least half of the fanbase of these games.

the one from 2 is called You WIll Recall Our Names. all 3 songs play during UM battles which are the big super leveled bosses, as well as used as character themes for a few characters. 1/DE is Shulk's theme, Recall is Mythra's theme, and 3's is a mix of the melodies of 1 and 2's which is the general idea of 3. I think it plays during a few Noah moments in the story but, in general The Weight of Life (which is also a mashup of 1 and 2 melodies) is used as Noah/Mios theme. the equivilant of the song used in X is called Uncontrollable

The one thing I prefer about the original is the tone of the lead guitar in the climax. Not sure how, but it just sounds that extra bit "cooler."

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition version of the song also had more horned and string instrumentals accompanying the original tune. Giving a grand triumphant feel.

Given how much you liked the original version, I would highly recommend listening to the original version of Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition songs you get requested. Most of them have the same sort of differences that you mentioned/noticed here. The community is pretty split on which version of the soundtrack is better, they are both quite unique and are mixed differently with different instruments and focus.

20:34 I'd argue Mechanical Rhythm is the fastest, this one would be the second fastest. Which is funny bc YWKON is the big scary "OH SHIT" Unique Monster music that springs on you and in some cases a sign that you're about to die whereas MR is... just the mechonis areas' normal battle music 😂

All of these songs are basically used for optional bosses. The name mainly links the style with XC2 having it's own more synthetic/jazzy version called You Will Recall Our Names. That's also not the end of the optional boss themes. All of which are great and treated with the same level of quality and grandeur as you'd expect any major boss should receive. XCDE: Fogbeast Battle XC2: Those Who Stand Against Our Path XC3: A Formidable Enemy XCX: Uncontrollable Each of these songs carry the similarity of being immediately intimidating and quickly becoming hopeful. They're meant to scare you when an enemy way beyond what you're capable of has you in its sights, but cheer you on when you finally come back to take them on a few hours and levels later.

I haven't played 3, but in XC1 at least, this song is kind of like a reused/generic boss battle theme. I imagine the name (You Will Know Our Names) refers to the protagonists, not the enemies, so it sounds triumphant and driving rather than ominous. This was the first time I heard the original version as opposed to the DE version, and I gotta agree with you that the original is better.

Thank you for the original again. From someone else thank you lol. I find the og for some of the xenoblade songs for better, some rematered are good, but og you will know our names is by far better imo. Honestly for me, the new one doesn't feel as impactful, when it's just the guitar going off, everything else feels so quiet. And I feel the instruments don't hit as hard, like the trumpets and stuff
