As some others have said, "Black Tar" is obviously separated into two parts feel different without making it seem like they're actually two songs. Basically, for most of the game you're on foot and the first part of Black Tar that feels grittier is the main battle theme when you start most battles on foot (since the setting of the game puts humanity on a struggle for survival in a hostile alien planet). However, late in the game you obtain the ability to build and pilot actual mechs for both exploration and combat, and that second part of Black Tar that has a more electronic feel is the battle theme when you start a fight while in your mech (which also feels like a power trip because even the weak starter mech you get can stomp a lot of mobs with little trouble when you first get it)

Sawano has sort of a squad of vocalists he tends to use often with his songs. I think he has roughly 8 to 10 vocalists that he has featuring in the majority of his songs... if they feature Vocalists at all. You have definitely heard a few of them already just from hearing Xenoblade X, but they show up in his Anime soundtracks as well. I believe the ones you've heard so far are: - Aimee Blackschleger (she was the main female vocalist for "Uncontrollable" and she seems to be Sawano's main Female singer for when he wants clear and fluent English vocals) - Mika Kobayashi (she is the main female vocalist in "No.EX01". I think the majority of her vocals are in German, which I guess he likes to use as sort of an Opera Singer style) - "mpi" (He's the melody male vocalist you heard in "Black Tar" as well as in "Uncontrollable" singing in the broken English voice. Supposedly he writes most of the lyrics in Sawano's songs) - David Whitaker (The Rapper... in "Black Tar" yeah he's essentially only the rapper and nothing else. He usually appears in songs with one of the other vocalists, as a sort of back-up singer. I've heard people compare him in "Black Tar" to something you might hear in a Linkin Park song. I actually think that was Sawano's primary idea when he puts David in his songs, that's just my opinion however) There's a bunch more vocalists even in Xenoblade X, but those 4 are the main ones you've heard so far.

I really love Xenoblade Chronicles X because I was one of the few Wii U owners during this time and the first time I saw gameplay of it I was blown away, no other games on the console looked that good. Not only that but the world was about five times the size of the world in Xenoblade Chronicles, which made sense because once you had access to the mechs, or Skells as they're called in-game, traversal was obviously much faster and more convenient, and you could basically go wherever you wanted. You could go into late-game areas and explore and get your ass kicked by every common enemy around (or if you were like me sneakily try to collect stuff in those areas early) or stick to the story progression path. I got it on release and put a ton of hours into the game, they're still some of my favorite gaming memories to this day. I'm happy this game is finally getting a remaster and I know that Monolith Soft will do it justice like the other Definitive Edition they've done. Apparently there will be additional story content which is promising, because the original is admittedly quite light on story focus which is a major complaint for many Xenoblade fans. I personally didn't mind it but it was also the first Xenoblade I played. I was aware of the original but didn't own a Wii so I never played it, but I think that's part of why this game is sort of the black sheep of the series. It released on a console that didn't sell many units, and it was so incredibly different to the first game that it left many fans confused on what direction the series was taking. I remember many Xenoblade fans were relieved when they saw that XC2 was going to be more like the original than not, despite the differences they have. I personally believe had this game released AFTER Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that it would have been far better received, so I'm glad it's getting a second chance soon :)

Xenoblade X has a very curious soundtrack. On one hand, I'd argue it's some of Sawano's greatest work ever, with an insane mix of epic, cool, and atmospheric pieces across the board. On the other hand, it's also home to some of the dumbest and silliest music I've ever heard in my life. An auditory rollercoaster, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
@Greyknight15752 ай бұрын
The songs with lyrics from Xenoblade X are pretty weird. If you speak any of the languages they're singing in you can tell the composer most likely doesn't speak it and is making the vocalist sing in a way that sounds cool to them. Thing is it does work because in the middle of battle when the lyrics are drowned out by combat noises the songs are straight up bangers that are no longer held back by strange vocal delivery.
@thenonexistinghero2 ай бұрын
Not like it makes a difference for me. Even in songs made in a native language I rarely understand more of the lyrics than just a few parts and the rest just sounds like a jumble to me for some reason. My brain just works weird like that. Though... I think it's the same for a lot of people. There's all these videos covering lyrics and/or meanings of songs and people realizing they never knew they were that 'filthy' or 'deep' for example.
@Greekanese312 ай бұрын
Glad to finally see Black Tar here! That song is longer on the soundtrack release than you'd hear in game, because each half of the song is actually used for different battles (this is slightly noticeable in the instrumentation changes) Hiroyuki Sawano has a large posse of artists that he collabs with for each of his soundtracks, and mpi is among the most - if not the most - frequent of them! You can tell when he sings cause he is often singing in English on Sawano works with a very thick Japanese accent. David Whitaker is another long standing collaborator and I think this song uses both excellently! Sawano has said of Xenoblade X at the time that it had the most vocal tracks of any of his soundtrack compositions. Tetsuya Takahashi went with Sawano for this game because he was such a big fan of Sawano's work. And this game, for the Western game/anime fandom, certainly came out at peak Sawano hype; fresh of the tails of Guilty Crown, Kill la Kill, Attack on Titan season 1, and Aldnoah.Zero. Stocks in the "Sawano drop" were at their peak, that's for year! I know anime songs are out of the scope of this channel for good reason, but if you're interested in Sawano please check out any themes from those above shows!

To summarize: Sawano typically is an Anime OST maker (Gundam Unicorn, Aldnoah Zero, Kill la Kill, Seraph of the End, 86, Attack on Titan) (notice, many of these titles are mecha, and AoT is also basically a mecha plot replacing mecha with meatbags) and Xenoblade Chronicles X was one of his first attempts at making an entire soundtrack for a game. He has a strong preference for grand orchestra, known for his drops in music(dubbed, the Sawano drop, when the music cuts out, then gets louder) as well has his hard preference on getting English and German lyrics into his songs, and not just sticking with Japanese. He credits his work in XCX as the most influential piece that shaped his music today, as he felt like Xenoblade let him be more free on what kinds of sounds he could make, moreso than his more popular OSTs in AoT or Gundam Unicorn. He partners with many vocalists of various fame. I jokingly say that if you collab with Sawano as an anime singer, you have hit it big time (major singers such as Aimer, Lisa and Takanori Nishikawa(TM Revolution) for example have colloborated with him.)

X is a very different game in that its focus is not the story, though its story is good imo. The music reflects that difference in a lot of ways. Most people I know who played the game thought it took some "getting used to." The gameplay itself is not too dissimilar from the other games in the franchise, however. It has its unique combat twists as they all did, but the underlying formula remains. I almost think of X like a Xenoblade game with some MMO styled quest and customization vibes to it. Even your player character can get a lot of customization in ways that was not possible in the other games. (3 brought some of this back...but not quite to the same level.) And yes, I am THRILLED to have X coming to the Switch. The console may very well be my favorite of all time. ^_^

Black Tar is of course the standard battle theme but the song has 2 different versions depending on if you're on foot or in the mech, 13:11 is the start of the mech version. The Overdrive theme Wir Fliegen (effectively X's version of a chain attack) and the Ganglion Theme (the standard antagonistic faction theme) also have foot and mech versions. The vocalists you heard were David Whitaker and mpi 2 vocalists who appear in quite a few Sawano songs and yes the ENTIRE Xenoblade X soundtrack is solely composed by Sawano, no guests whatsoever

the release order is 1, x, 2, 3. And before X released, 2's development already started and Takahashi already had the main idea for 3.

For those who do not know a person called Hiroyuki Sawano made the soundtrack for Xenoblade X. If you have not heard of him he developed openings for anime's like ( Solo Leveling, Aldnoah Zero, Guilty Crown, and 86). Xenoblade X was his testing phase with music before now 2024. This is in my opinion his best work from that time in 2015. He will hopefully be going back and re doing the work for the Xenoblade X port. List of all popular soundtracks Hiroyuki Sawano did for XenoBlade X - Black Tar+Skell ( Fighting Music Played 24/7 Unless Bosses) - In the forest ( boss Music) -The key we've lost ( Battle Theme) -Don't worry ( Skell Flying Theme) -Melancholia ( Main Menu Music) -Uncontrollable ( Elite Boss Battle Music Only) -N市L街A ( Morning Theme for NLA) -N木ig木ht木L ( Night theme for NLA) -N周L辺A (Primordia world theme when exploring)

The announcement of the definitive edition of this game means that all of my gaming dreams have been coming true this year. Surely that means the streak will continue and Jesse will eventually play this game (and 3)

ah this game my first game i bought when i got the new wii u system p.s. who was happy when they got their license to ride a mech?

You feeling Black Tar took over your senses might also be because you basically did hear two different songs back-to-back without knowing. :P The first half in the Black Tar video is the normal battle theme on the ground, whereas the second half is a different normal battle theme (but same name) when you're piloting a mech. Got a 3-for-1 video when you thought it was going to be a 2-for-1.

Aww no way I missed this... Yeah so without spoiling anything, X is indeed quite different in a lot of important ways. What I will say, is that it plays much more similarly to a western open world RPG than your standard linear JRPG and there's a lot of things I am curious to see how they get updated for the remaster as I own a Wii U and the OG. It also has bar none of the wildest most exciting soundtracks of any RPG I have ever played - I'm talking Persona 5 levels of awesome so you got plenty to look forward to and I am happy that more fans will get exposed to what was previously a very niche release. Please let someone have requested Uncontrollable or Wir Fliegen !!! EDIT: Right almost forgot, this game was also a MAJOR callback to Xenogears, and to my knowledge the only Xenogame since the saga trilogy to feature playable mechs again, something I've really missed (I've not played XC3 so don't tell me)

That is the main promotional picture of xenoblade X as well as the titlescreen so there's both a static and a moving version of it.

This post has no spoilers. Original Xenoblade Chronicles was a Wii title that almost never got an international release, and was an unexpected success MUCH later than its original release because of the western campaign to bring it over. This game came out five years later, for the Wii U, and shared development resources with the localization of XC1, as a result this game had a shoestring budget, and they brought on Sawano, an exclusively TV and Anime composer ( Kill la Kill, Attack on Titan ) in for his first video game credit. They did not have the budget to pay Sawano for a full scope score, and thus the soundtrack for this game is only 3 and a half hours long, where XC1, XC2, and XC3 are between 8-10 hours each, but all four games share roughly the same playtime, so in XC:X there is a lot of musical repetition and looping compared to the other titles. Black Tar is the normal combat theme and as long as you stay in the same area it resumes its place...plus normal battles in this game can stretch on for a bit because of the way the combat system works. You've reacted to the "Tyrant" theme a few years ago called Uncontrollable. There's also an "Overdrive" or "Limit Break" theme called Wir Fliegen that can also play during combat, and then it segues back into black star. You can also get Wir Fligen to play in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 during a chain attack if you have the DLC character "Elma" selected when you initiate it. 24:07 XC1 Definitive is the same score as the OG version they just have an orchestra playing it, so aside from the types of instruments, it's the same experience.

will totally recommend listening to the OST for gundam unicorn by sawano. either series versions or the live orchestra performance

Xenoblade Chronicles X feels like a Xenoblade series game....but it definitely has it's own unique identity beyond that. Pleased it's being re-released! :D It's pretty fantastic. One of the best games on the WiiU, honestly.

Man when the Black Tar chorus kicks in during a Skell fight, so good. I unironically enjoyed Black tar! is it cheesy? Of course, but when the track is playing when you are in a fight it just hits a bit differently.

This still is its own unique thing. (Even if yeah mechs kinda are in most of Monolithsoft's games. Takahashi just likes his mechs lol)

Sawano's vocal style is a guilty pleasure. He's not switching between Japanese and English, just for comment/conversation sake I'm sure that's already understood, but the way he's singing is very unique. It's really over the top and just infectious.

Xenoblade Chronicles X was the second game to be released in the series. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was the third. However on a world-building and story-telling level it is an entirely different beast then the numbered series. Nonetheless Xenoblade Chronicles X can still compete as one of my favorites in the series. Just by the music alone.
