Thank you for reminding me why I love this game so much, I got this a month after it's release and fell in love with it right from the start. I just wish we could see more games that this deep of a story line.

Very interesting. I've always been a huge fan of the game, and the story is simply breathtaking. Honestly, I love the fact that the player knows almost nothing about the REAL problem. Even the tower of Babel turns out to be a piece of the ship itself, and the fact that it isn't explained early on really makes it all that much more intense.

great! I just finished this game and I find it amazing how well the narrative communicated such a nuanced plot. I enjoyed hearing your clear presentation of all the details I'm still rolling around in my head.

great commentary! I played through this once and loved it. Interesting how this backstory carries over to Xenosaga, too. (though that's a much more soap opera-y series, imo)

One of the greatest RPGs and stories of all time!! The original developing team should really remake this game!!

Kinda wished your speech was a bit louder and the music a bit softer. But hey, awesome analysis/recap. I never got around to finishing the game, so I never know the whole plot. Luckily Xenogears is such a hit that I could find all the required bits and pieces online.

I wont even ask how the space humans even managed to imprison God in the Zohar.

Good analysis. While playing the game, they do not make all of this clear. Don't you consider The Wave Existence being even more selfish than Deus though? Now hear me: Deus was created to be a weapon but it was given too much power by connecting it to The Wave Existence which made it sentient. So it begins to think for itself and, upon its attempted destruction, it defends itself! What was so wrong with that? Humans attempt to destroy it by blowing up the ship, it says, "I'll create humans as biomass to use as parts." In that sense, humans are just parts for Deus as the game describes. The Wave Existence just wanted to leave and go back to its own universe so it needed Deus dead. Deus was just trying to survive whereas The Wave Existence wanted all of its power to itself and wanted to leave this universe and the humans alone to go to its own universe. If you ask me, The Wave Existence is the true badguy in this plot! Allowing Elly and Fei to die over and over and suffer thousands of years of torturous pain just so it can break away from Deus. Sounds like Deus to me! Using people as parts to further your own agenda.

It's a uncomfortable position this places us in. The Wave Existence may not have any malicious intent, but its action would have destroyed humanity on the world of Xenogears when retuning home without a single thought of regret. It may have been incidental, but genocidal nonetheless. Deus, on the other hand, if it indeed had some form of consciousness, may have seen itself as a sort of savior by absorbing humanity into itself. That's just a postulation of mine, but it is something to think about. Either way, both the Wave Existence and Deus were gods of sorts, but their actions would have killed everybody. I don't see much of a difference between them. The Wave Existence didn't need to kill everyone to achieve its goal, but decided to anyway. Just the same, Deus didn't need human biomass anymore because of the nanomachines, but chose to absorb the population anyway. Both chose to kill everyone when they didn't need to. Maybe they thought themselves so above humanity that the lives wasted were insignificant to them. The actions and intentions may be different, but the results are the same.

Yet we choose to kill Deus and leave the Wave Existence alive? See my point? We make this good guy bad guy war going on when both sides are pretty much the same in many of these stories. I'm rooting for the other team haha!

And the humans are simply caught in the middle of a conflict between gods. Shame the characters in the game didn't reference this moral gray area.

I really enjoy this analysis. Also, if you guys didn't know yet, there's a whole book regarding the lore of this game called Perfect Works. Some good people have translated it into English: 1) www.scribd.com/doc/36300558/Xenogears-Perfect-Works#scribd 2) www.flickr.com/photos/29956195@N08/sets/72157616593453778/

Same here man, I beat it at 14 and INSTANTLY became an RPG storyline/soundtrack/ snob lol. Every JRPG story gets compared to Xenogears and there's been nothing so far to change that.

Alot of young people who beat this game only think of the gameplay but have no idea how deep the story is. Takes multiple playthroughs to realise it or be of a mature age to actually pay attention.

@@xcaluhbration i just played it again recently, it's indeed the most well made JRPG of all time. I played a lot of JRPG but there's nothing compared the complexity of Xenogears. I think the creators really want to create something so perfect based on their passion of this xenogears universe. If only they gave them chances and enormous budget, we would have those 6 episodes completed rn after 20 years. It's not just a game but simply perfect art

Wait a minute, something's not adding up here... What was the reason Deus was on the Eldrige in the first place? I was under the impression that Deus was being shipped to another planet for evaluation or analysis. You know, to see if they could make corrections and make him less dangerous. Is that right? If the ship crashed along that path, within the known and mapped out star system 'highways'... well, it seems a bit odd that no one ever came to investigate the wreckage during the next 10,000 years. Unless of course I'm missing something. Even in our time, when we lose a package, we have a way to track it. Let alone state-of-the-art mass death machines.
@MegaLazygamer10 жыл бұрын
It was being sent somewhere to be disassembled because it was too dangerous. I don't remember anything about an evaluation, but I guess it's possible. I also don't know why no one came looking after the ship crashed. Taking cues from the Xenosaga series, their may have been a civil war going on, so the Eldredge's route may have been top secret to prevent Deus the from falling into enemy hands. Few people would have known where it was going, much less where along its route it crashed. The resources required to find it might have been too great to do secretly. Then once the few people in the know died it was lost to history. That's with an extremely heavy dose of conjecture, though.

MegaLazygamer I guess we can only speculate. You make some good points though, with the wartime thing. Similar stuff happened in germany during world war 2. Private trains carried workers and supplies to a remote village where state-of-the-art weapons were being developed (the mere existence of this place was classified and unknown to the public at the time). And I believe there was an incident where a ship loaded with 'heavy water' - a substance needed to make nuclear bombs - was sunk and lost and forgotten for a time. All the information channels were so compartmentalized and secretized that even high officials didn't really know what was going on. Anyhow, thanks for doing this lets play. I enjoyed it immensely. I like the way you explore the character motivations and point out how they grow and change. Kind of sharpens the whole story. Subscription earned, sir. Cheers.

strangefox WOW! You and MegaLazygamer's points here are really insightful! The most interesting question for me about the game is: why didn't anyone come looking for them? Or put another way: what happened to the galactic civilization the Eldridge came from? What you two said really makes a lot of sense.

So imagine in real life we are all just a by product of a super computer AI that wants to ressurect itself one day, imagine the horror this world would come if the masses knew that this is the truth , all premonitions of heaven and an after life would fall, not to mention anarchy and fear, civilization would crumble in a second, unless your a nihilistic person, then you will be like meh.
