Xenogears is a epic science-fiction role-playing game developed and published by Square for the PS1. This game is nearly legendary with RPG fans both for its story and complex battle system, and this week I give you my review on it!

This game is a fucking immortal masterpiece, never I have seen a RPG with such an impossibly huge scope on its history and characters, it blew me away all those years ago, and still does, truly a timeless classic of the sacred genre of RPG games.

like he says in this review, the story drags on too much in this game, and pretty frequently. i just think it was stupid that they tried to make the make so absurdly huge when they knew they didn't have the time or budget to finish it. imagine if it had been 4 discs, all like the first disc, it would be the longest ps1 rpg ever by by. they should have cut the story down to fit into 2 discs, without having to cram nothing but story in disc 2. it would still be longer than most rpgs on the ps1 and having a full 2nd disc, similar to the first while simplying the plot just a bit would put this game higher on my list. i like a deep plot in a game but they went overboard with it in this game and during the long story segments, even on disc one, i found half of it somewhat uninteresting or just unnessessary.

The old rpgs, where the text bubbles are instead of spoken word, give you much more choices how YOU create your own characters. How you put fantasy and imagination into them. It's like reading a book. Along with complexity, creativity and originality put in stories back in the PSX era you get timeless epics. This is why almost every old rpg shines even after 20 years. In other words - These games have soul. I can't feel this something special in most modern era games.
@Jack_80

yeah, rpgs have gradually gone downhill since the ps1 days. there are some rpgs i very much enjoy on the ps2, ps3, and even a couple on the ps4, but no console will ever match the ps1 with the sheer number of amazing rpgs.

I'm one of those guys that considers this their favorite game of all time. You have to keep in mind that this is coming from the memories of a then 14 year old. I still love it as an adult, and am able to appreciate the story on a more mature level, but it's still the memories from a 14 year old that keeps a special place for Xenogears.

This is the best RPG of all time IMO. The music man, the music is a masterpiece, the battle system is as good as it gets in jrpg, the story is damn good, complex and convoluted it will suck you in like the best of novels. It gives me the shivers every time I see footage if this art masterpiece. I like that you mention the composer Yasunori Mitsuda, that guy is a legend. You're true, it's more difficult than it should be (it required grinding at least for me). The worst part is that it aged terribly with that graphic style and those low quality string arrangements (but back in the day that didn't matter), this DESERVES a full fledged remake and a prequel and true sequel (nothing against Xenosaga but it's a far cry from Xenogears, I don't even consider them the same franchise to be honest).

Xenogears is like a religion to me, and I am a proud follower. Never has my mind been blown away by a story as much as this one and left such a resounding, profound lasting impact, and it took about 3 playthroughs and a thorough reading of Perfect Works to fully understand just how "epic" this masterpiece really is. Sucks about disc 2 being reduced mostly to story telling without much gameplay, due to the time constraints of the release date, but that does little to take away from my opinion of it as a whole. Very few RPGs actually make me forget about time, and the world going on around me while playing, and place me in theirs, this being one of them.

We, well, Kotaro Higashida, and I, put the original Xenogears Perfect Works translation on the internet, and it was used to write everything regarding the english timeline/lore to this day. Yep, my favorite game of all time. One of the few games that truly gives you the feeling that you've went on an epic journey and everything is different by the end. Another thing that's not really talked about much with this game are the environments. Granted they're low-res, but the overall layout and art direction are amazing. There's also so many secrets and little details that you might miss the first time that really add depth of the world
@MProject777
@MProject777 9 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's almost as if one is discovering new world environments with imaginative props and set pieces inspired by the progress of our existence. Let's not forget that Xenogears practically describes a thorough history of a planet through a 10,000 year timeline. It's filled with details describing battles and politics, character motivations, science and technological theories, and cultural and religious insinuations. Add to that genuine dialog, badass villains, love, romance, and an exceptional soundtrack. It's something that very few videogames, movies, and even some books lack let alone even attempt.

@MocnyBrowarek 10 жыл бұрын
mattmanrx99 Well it's great, probobly third best jRPG on the PS1. But first and second place imho will always be Xenogears and Chrono Cross... in whichever way you like. Those two are amazing, and I'm hardcore RPG player ;) And about breath of fire... it's sad how much underrated those games are IMHO. Everyone always talks about Fina Fantasy, but truth is they never were the best (still great, but never the best). Same is with Dragon Quest...
@Radioswim
@Radioswim 10 жыл бұрын
MocnyBrowarek I agree. Breath of Fire 1 and 2 got a whole lot of praise in their day, and still are talked about as some of the best RPGs of all time, but I don't feel like BoF 3 or 4 get enough love. Those games had some outstanding narratives, not to mention great combat systems. Also Dragon Quest VIII, A fantastic RPG.
@MocnyBrowarek
@MocnyBrowarek 10 жыл бұрын
John McClane But Dragon Quest VIII is a PS2 RPG. And imho PS2 is the golden age of RPGs (yes! not the SNES! PS2 have more high quality RPGs! both systems are great and have great RPGs, but PS2 have just more of those). Personaly I think that DQ8 is best game in the series and one of top PS2 RPGs.
@Radioswim
@Radioswim 10 жыл бұрын
MocnyBrowarek Crap my bad, I meant Dragon Quest VII Also, I couldn't disagree more about PS2 being the golden age. If you look at numbers alone, yeah the PS2 has about a dozen or two more RPGS (PS1 has about ~75, PS2 nearly 100) but most of the RPGs I find on the PS2 weren't really worth the time to play them. Hardly any of them sucked me in till the end, so I ended up quitting most half way through. I love RPGs, specifically JRPGs, and having grown up through both PS1 and PS2 era, I remember during the PS2 era constantly thinking to myself "Man, just can't seem to find a good JRPG to play". That simply never happened on the PS1. Realistically though, if I made a list of RPGs I enjoyed on both systems, they might be pretty similarly stacked, but I'm going with my gut on this one. I've never considered SNES the golden age of JRPGs. For me it has always been the PS1.

Also, a couple of minor details. You mentioned the 'producer' at the beginning of the video being Hiromichi Tanaka, and then later went on to refer to the 'producer' who went on to do Xenogears. Hiromichi Tanaka is the producer for this game, but the director, scenarist and concept is Tetsuya Takahashi and he's the one who went on to do Xenosaga.

The Funny thing is - it was never released in Europe. Here in Germany, except for a few Hardcore Nerds, nobody knew this Game. In my Country there was released only 2 entrys in the "Xeno" Franchise - "Xenosaga Episode 2" and "Xenoblade Chronicles". I downloaded "Xenogears" from the US PSN Store and I find this is one of the best Classic JRPGs I've ever played, even better than FF7 in my opinion. I don't understand why Sony have never released this in Germany...
@Spriggangirl
@Spriggangirl 8 жыл бұрын
+Walthor Faustus I think the reason why this gem-classic never saw the light of day in Europe is because it has something to do with religion. And I also came across why it's not on the European PSN: PSOne classics have been doing surprisingly well on the PlayStation Network. RPGs in particular seem to do very well, such as Final Fantasy 7 which has been in the top ten most sold pretty much every month since it released on the store. The latest Square Enix RPG to hit the PlayStation Store is Xenogears, but an EU release is not available. Sony responded to questions regarding this on their blog saying:"The problem with Xenogears is that there is no PAL disc, it was never released here. This poses a series of problems for us, but I’m trying to get those problems resolved although I can’t say if they will be or how long it will take, (I’m not being cute, I just really don’t know if they can be resolved).""I, personally, would love nothing more than to bring you Xenogears." Simple, the game was never released in Europe, so it can't be released on the European PlayStation Store. Surely this means it will sell like hotcakes if it ever does release on the Store in Europe?

But in attempt to capture footage with HDPVR, the recording crashes anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes into the video. Going to try upgrading & see if using s-video will solve that.... But I'm doubting. Great review. This is one of my favorite games ever. By far my favorite RPG. I'm glad that you were able to enjoy it now even though you didn't play it when it was first released. I'm sure someone's already mentioned it, but just in case they haven't, I'll write it here. Yasunori Mitsuda is my favorite composer and a huge influence on my own music so I can't help but set the record straight. Mitsuda only composed a handful of songs (9 to be exact) for Shadow Hearts, the bulk of which were composed by Yoshitaka Hirota. Masaharu Iwata co-composed one track, and Ryo Fukuda co-composed two tracks. And Mitsuda-san only composed the vocal theme for Xenoblade (just one song of the entire soundtrack). He wrote all but 10 tracks of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack (9 were by Nobuo Uematsu and 1 was by Noriko Matsueda). Mitsuda did compose the entire Chrono Cross soundtrack. A few other soundtracks that Mitsuda was solely responsible for include Xenosaga, Tsugunai, The Seventh Seal, Rakugaki Ōkoku 2 (Graffiti Kingdom), and Soma Bringer. :)

Good review, though I think you should have expanded upon the dialogues / cutscenes and elaborated on how detrimental they were, or weren't, to your overall personal enjoyment of the game. Is it a game you would play a second time someday, or was it too tedious to beat the first time around?

You haven't heard anything about s-video solving the problem? My searches come up with nada. Would really like to get into it without buying another device or capture card. Still thinking it wouldn't hurt to upgrade my older stuff from composite to s-video at some point though.

That depends on a few things. If you check eBay, you should be able to find a used "greatest hits" (green label) copy in good condition for $18 to $25. "Black label" releases for the PS1 tend to fetch a higher price; if that's your thing, then you should be able to find a "black label" Xenogears for a little over $25. If you buy the discs only, without artwork and case, you could expect to knock $5 to $10 off, but a sealed, new copy can sell for over a hundred dollars. Hope that helps.

I have yet to beat this game. I didn't get far when I played it. It was more of a test run. I'm in the middle of trying to beat all the Metal Gear games right now, so I may play it next. Thanks for the great review friend.

Excellent presentation review. I just got it off of the Psn network. I'm a hardcore fighting game player but I've found this game gives me a break from the hectic online fighting. I played xenosaga on ps2 when it first came out and I'm loving this game.

I played this game when it 1st came out. Im 31. I had it on the psx. I can agree that this game was compressed on the 2nd disc. The lack of time & $ made the characters tell the story rather than being able to play it out. In my opinion it is the best rpg ever. The story, in depth characters, the soundtrack goes without saying. Ig productions playing a huge part in the game. How can it not be? Yes the sprites made you feel like it was a nintendo game but it was made in 1998. That was my freshman year in high school. What made this game so addicting and mysterious is that you had to piece the story together & level up. the dialogue has so much substance. Its truly amazing to add so much culture in this rpg. It made you pay attention. I loved the difficulty on this game. No other game can compare. I still have this game but on the ps3. Im currently doing the last of the side mussions and buying joe parts. Thats all you need brother. I appreciate the review.

I decided to look this up because Yasunori Mitsuda was the composer. He was the composer for Chrono Cross, which I love, so I figured it'd be worth looking into. I actually have to say the game looks fun in its own way. I really should give it a try sometime. Sadly, my gaming interests swing pretty heavily after I've played through a game and my mind only wants to play one type of game at a time, generally. Right now, I've been playing open-world games like MGSV:TPP, Breath of the Wild and (technically in my mind) Super Mario Odyssey. Stuff where you can explore and don't have to do just one thing.

When one looks back at Xenogears, it's staggering to remember the story because of how much happens and through all the places you go to.

Sorry just seeing this vid now, I realize I’m really late on it, but great video. Xenogears is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Awesome graphics and design for the time. It’s so cool to see the state of the current Xeno games in game art looking so close to the original art! One of the best series ever! Thanks for all of your great content👍
