Remaking the Chrono series isn't as simple as just "remastering" it. How many people that actually worked on CT do you think still work for square? Right. Anyway, would you want the same people who worked on XIII remake CT? Remaking vii is one thing, but modernizing chrono trigger so that it'll compete with current games is a whole different story.

Unfortunately this game was an issue of debate when it came out and is also why copies are hard to find today. They released a small amount of copies in the US because people had problems with the religious undertones in the game. My guess is those same reasons are why they would never do a remake.

Good recap. I think you could have explained the Ouroboros thing more though. In killing Ouroboros, Fei destroyed the "eternal recurrence" (a nietzschean idea, man that word was hard to spell) that was forcing Fei and Elly to continually reincarnate. Nietzsche's idea of it was that, if the universe were to last forever, it would be impossible for any given person to not eventually be born again in their current state somewhere in it. The way he put it, it was more or less a curse. So in that regard, it was pretty well-applied in this game--Fei and Elly are mortals by the end of the game.

+Terracorrupt It's interesting too how, at the very least starting in the Second Temple period (6th century BC and onward), eve's hebrew name, Hawwa--and Miang's name as well, for obvious purposes--was considered etymologically connected to their word for "serpent".... "Hawwe" or something like that. Google "serpentine eve" for some sources if you're curious. There was a lot of writing, especially into christian times, about this connection. But the crazy thing is, the last boss in this game really is "serpentine eve"..! Sometimes symbolism recurs in media such as this to where I can't expect that the creators could have been aware of these details... but if the xenogears writers really put this much thought into it, then holy shit, props to them. I'd like to think there are unconscious properties to these myths that somehow recur on their own, transcending even culture. I can think of other examples too, like the japanese moon-day and sun-day lining up with those in english. I wish there were explanations for these sorts of things.

Interesting... Understanding these complex games is a bit like studying history. You can spend your entire life cataloging a period of 50 years of history, or you could simplify it and decide what is important and what is not and move on with your life. Spoilers for Xenosaga main story below (if I'm remembering it correctly) thats basically what happens in Xenosaga also. The main antagonist is trying to enforce Eternal Recurrence, because basically in Xenosaga the world as 3 possible endings: hell (the universe is destroyed because too many souls refuse to merge with god), heaven (where all souls merge with god), and eternal recurrence (where the universe is reset whenever too many souls come into existence). The main antagonist, Wilhelm, is a coward who thinks that the likelihood of Heaven (or the Good Ending) is super unlikely compared to the Hell ending, so he enforces Eternal Recurrence because he doesn't want the world to end forever. The protagonists are then, of course, agents of the Heaven ending. A bunch of reincarnated holy-spirits who, if they do very specific things, can bring about Heaven (or fuck up and bring about Hell). Of course in the game none of these terms are so simply explained. God is called U-Do, the Zohar and Anima are also in there(they are tools of the Agents of Heaven as I'm calling them), and theres so much biblical jargon and comparatively minor plot events that makes it super difficult to understand whats going on, just like in Xenogears.

I always assumed Ouroboros was the system Hawwa, thus Fei destroyed Miang, releasing Elly. Nice interpretation of assuming Ouroboros to be the "eternal recurrence".

I thought this old gem of a game had been long forgotten, imagine my surprise to find a video like this - and from a fellow Irishman! Great work... You have inspired me to dig out my old copy and play through it all over again (this would be my third play through). I still can't believe you managed to condense this story into 38 minutes! lol. Xenogears is one of my all time favourite games, and it's a bit of a coincidence that I ever played it, since I'm Norwegian, I recon not many Norwegians or Europeans for that matter has even heard of this epic game. Of the people I know, only my brother in law (he's the owner of the copy I played) and me know about it, plus the people I've showed this game to. :)

Marius Malmstrøm Lol not to bring race into it but this game is made by an Asian development and none of my Asian friends even played this game. I only know four people who have played this game, two white guys, a black guy, and an Asian guy. All of these guys are hardcore rpg fans and are casual gamers on occasion. My cousin plays RPGs, he's never played this game lol My friend next door plays RPGs, he's never played this game lol. Despite all that, this game sold 1 million copies worldwide. It's one of the best stories I've ever had the privilege of getting to see unfold in a video game. I think it holds up really well and the story is close to Evangelion. Except Xenogears isn't nonsensical. Also I loved the combat in this game.

I don't think anyone understood this plot when the game first game out. lt's only years later when people started breaking it down and analyzing it that people really understood it. The Perfect Works book also REALLY helps. lt's almost essential if you want to actually comprehend everything that happens.

Thx for a fantastic video. I have played this game for like 15 years, my favorite game of all time. It took me about 5 playthrougs to finally grasp all of the story, since it's such a huge game, with a grand story, many characters and so many references to hisorical, religious and filosofical facts. Such a wonderful game, not only for the story and characters, but the charming graphics, the battle system and fantastic music. It's been 3 years since my last playthrough, I think it's time again next year :)

Ah, and just to mention, Citan's proper pronounciation is Shitan (shee-taun) as spelled in the japanese version. They mistranslated it that way though due to the word shit being in his name. Ah, thanks amigo. One of my favorite games growing up, modifying the mechs, plus the wonderful martial art/combo mechanic, it was just great. And the story was fantastic, always peeling away layer after layer, always leaving you wanting to solve the next mystery. The second disk fiasco was unfortunate, but wasn't enough to detract from the game as a whole. My Playstation's death was a sad, sad day (I still have the original game disks). I can't help but think that this game was a lost gem that not enough people knew about or fully appreciated. I wish it had been remade on current hardware with enough resources to finish the entire game. That would have been amazing, simply amazing. Ah, well, we can still hope.

Great explanation. As with most commenters as have said, I never really understood the story as I first played Xenogears being about 13 years old in 2002. Being the child I was, I would just mash "X" and hope for the gameplay to come sooner. Replaying it today through PSN, It was so much easier for me to understand allowing me to appreciate the lore a lot more. Tho, I was confused at some points of my 45+ hour playthrough and watched this video for clarification. Still, I would love to see them remake this game into two games especially with the horrible mess disc 2 was. It would've be great to see more in depth cutscenes of the aveh/kislev war, the townspeople transform into wels, experiencing dungeons like the Mass Driver Facility, and expanded anima dungeon relic.

I love this concept but your pronunciation of words makes me want to gag. -Weltall is pronouned with a V sound, not a W sound as it's German in origin. -Thames should be "Tims", like the bridge in Britain. -Yggdrasil; I don't even think I pronounce is right, but I know for certain that you aren't. -Citan and Sigurd should both start with a "sigh" like sound, such as with "cider". -I'm not sure how you got "Esmeralda" out of Emeralda's name, but I'm glad you fixed it in this. -Shevat should have a short E, not a long E. -Maria is pronounced as Ma-rye-uh... not Ma-ree-uh. -Roni should be said like "Ronny" much in the same way Toni and Tony are pronounced the same way. -Solaris... As a side note, Elly and Fei do not crash in Blackmoon Forest after Ramsus pummels them in Vendetta. They crash on the small island that Taura's house was on.

Xenogears remake is a must. On PS3 or PS4--heck, even made specifically for Vita, with graphic quality of Ys or better yet, Uncharted Golden Abyss, is fine. Sigh. It's still the extreme best, story-wise.

The English translated Perfect Works digital copy; I found that project online a long time ago when the owner was still in the process of translating. I made CONTACT and requested when he was done that I would distribute it hard, I packed it all up page by page as well as converting to different formats, and I did just that across various torrents/download sites. The owner's name at the time was Ichiban Manten, but now goes by UltimateGraphics on Flickr. If you were to google "perfect works systom" I'm sure you'd still find trails, Systom being me. Chances are, if anyone has read this copy, it's because of my distribution of it, but of course full credit goes to the person I knew as Ichiban Manten at that time. 'Til this day, I still consider Xenogears to be my #1 game of all time, and my love for this game pushed to get this out to all and any potential fans. Your videos are pretty spot on and saves about 80 hours in the process, heh.

After ending xenoblade chronicle on switch and watch this, i realize xc2 story is simplified version of this story. Anyway either game is have really good story.

Thanks Terracorrupt, kudos to you bro, now at last i can truly understand this game 100%, because it was incredibly tough to understand. It seems my bigger complain was who created who, Wave E = Fei and Elly and Deus = Miang and she gave birth to Cain and the Gazel, it seems everyone wanted to be free one way or another. For me this was the biggest question, thanks my friend.

I played this game on my PS1 20 years ago, and I have doubts on whether I have completed this game before or haven't I. But, watching that ending scene, with Fei and Elly in the Xenogear sparks a memory of having seen that scene before, and thus I can say that - yes! I did complete this wonderful and heartfelt game.

Great job summarizing this epic game. Although i cringed everytime you mispronounced a lot of the names and locations (for example "Ave" is pronounced "Ah - Veh" not "Ey - Vah")

talking of complex story . . Anyway, you motivated me to buy that game on the US PS store. (i've already got chrono cross and chrono trigger, and Parasite Eve 1, but that's another story ^^)

This is an odd way of arriving at this conclusion, but I realized that Xenogears was my favorite RPG when I couldn't come up with what my favorite was before. I also had the pleasure of beating it in the PS2 era, when I could play it with texture smoothing, and could see it for what was intended. (As an aside, Breath of Fire III was stunning on the PS2.)

A game set apart from any other of its kind and to many others like myself, a life changing experience. At 13, I remember a shift, being almost a different (or maybe better put, a new) person and existing in a much much bigger world after playing through Xenogears. Almost like a “rites of passage” in a modern day kind of sense. One that would fill me with a deep sense of wonder in my youth and that would set the course of my journey/walk in life. Xenogears almost didn’t happen but I’m damn grateful that it did!!
