Easy game. Rolling it over on a single quarter takes about 3-4 hours. Tips: 1) Crouch Step Most of the Time: You can hit almost every monster from this position, except for Mama & leaping Aliens that are still in the air. Plus, you can avoid some high attacks & ceiling tentacles. 2) Manufacture Grenades: Every room with 3 grenades will spawn an additional 3 grenades if you take them, go to the next room, and before the door behind you closes, throw 1 grenade back into the room you just left. Go back into that room, and there will be 3 more grenades to pick up. Repeat until you have the maximum amount of grenades you can carry (limit = 99). Use your grenade stash to quickly clear rooms. Manufacture more as needed. 3) Use the Health Machine on the Beta Level of the Starbase: The primary objective of the Starbase level should be to max out your health. Don't worry about clearing the infestation until afterwards. The room with the curtain of yellow balls is the health room. Clear the room of monsters. Hit the button on the wall. Quickly jump into the curtain BEFORE it stops flashing. Every successful jump adds 1000 to your health. Repeat until you have max health of 9999. Clear the room of monsters as needed. If Mama appears, either kill her or flee to another room, then backtrack to this room to begin the process again. If I remember correctly, this is the only health machine in the entire repeating iteration of bases/ships, so keep an eye out for each Starbase level to max out your health again. 4) Weapons: Lay down continuous fire until the room is cleared of monsters and every time a door opens. a) Laser Gun - best overall weapon for long range & power. b) Electro Gun - best sounding weapon, but worst practical weapon besides the phaser. Good power but far too short range. If you really want to use it, make sure you manufacture a lot of grenades to use for long range attacks. If you're an expert, you can also use this weapon to slow-kill Mama Alien to death, if you're mad at her (see below). c) Gas Gun - only for experts. Very short range, but kills extremely quickly. If you can successfully manufacture grenades, then you can use them in conjunction with this weapon. Use grenades liberally for long range attacks & gas gun for short range attacks. If you're an expert, you can clear entire bases in record time using this combination. 5) Killing Mama Alien: Don't linger too long in any room or Mama will appear. Avoid staring at Mama, because you'll be paralyzed, damaged, and lose your weapon. If she appears in front, either immediately turn around and flee to the previous room, or quickly throw a grenade in her face, killing her. If she's staring in the opposite direction, either flee before her thrown egg ball can ricochet hit you, or shoot/grenade her in the face. If you're angry at her, slow-kill her by shooting one shot with the laser or electro gun, watch her grimace & moan in pain, then shoot her again before she can throw her ball. Repeat these one shots until she finally dies.

Where were you and your guide 30 or 40 years ago? I _really_ could have put those grenade-duping and health-maxing cheats to good use! 😝 And the Gas Gun need not be "experts only" if you're playing with another player or two. They grab a laser pistol and you grab a gas gun (or vice-versa) and you stick with them. The pistol guy pecks the xenos from long range and keeps them flinching while the gas guy runs in and annihilates them with a puff or two. Ideally, the guy with the gas gun should pick up the first knife you see and stay standing for fast movement and jumping; having a knife means that you *_kill_* any tentacles that grab you (instead of merely escaping their grasp), so go ahead, xenos. I *_dare_* you to grab me! 😆 Walking and jumping aren't so bad; just keep one eye on the ceiling. The moment you see the ceiling cracking, back off. You can still shoot xeno projectiles out of the air, and mass extermination of eggs, crawlers and rolly-pollies is simple with the gas gun; just aim down as you walk around and puff-puff-puff. IIRC, that combination can even work on Queens (or "Mamas", as you phrase it); Pistol Guy keeps pecking Mama in the face from range so she can't do anything, Gas Gun Guy leaps over and blasts her in the face with his or her (because I always mained Dr. Udderbay if I got the Player 2 stick) Super Bug Spray...dead Mama is dead. 😎 I would imagine that health-maxing would work even more easily on a two- or three-player game too. "Okay, you two stand behind that curtain of yellow balls. I'll keep jamming on this button. If any xenos come into the room, shoot them. All maxed now? Okay, now switch places with me. Thanks, guys! Operation: Exterminatus continues."
@BloodyBay2 ай бұрын
@@rcschmidt668 That's another advantage of two- or three-player games: One guy stands there blasting the dripping slime while the other guy(s) walk through, then one of the other guys turns around and returns the favor. No slime drops? No problem! That doesn't work so well if all two or three players do the stupid thing and split up in all directions the moment they beam aboard, but hey, you're standing right next to them, right? Just chew them out until they get with the program! The smart people stay together in horror movies, and the smart people stay together in Xenophobe; you'll clear the rooms a lot faster that way! 😉

But I do remember going through the different passage shooting up aliens and then setting the self destruct and escaping. Only to be in another space station repeating the same thing over and over. But it was interesting to have 2 people playing and having them go in opposite directions. So you did not need to be on the same screen as your buddy that was playing.

I had the same problem. I remembered the visuals vividly from arcades growing up. I'm 31 now. I scoured Google searching for "alien sidescrollers" and stuff to no avail. Then, I went on the websites that listed arcade games. I think cause it's Xenophobe with an "X" i'd never make it that far down the list or the name seemed obscure when I found it on a list and I didn't investigate. It evaded me for years till the other day when I saw it on the Midwest Gaming Classic's FB page in an advertisement for the creator being there. His name is Brian Colins, really cool dude. Obviously helped make our childhood's pretty dope. You weren't the only one my dude, ha.

If you played this on your own in the arcade, it was not possible to get this far, the timer simply ran down so fast you could not clear the aliens. That said, this guy has a lot of skill. The tentacles from the ceiling and floor literally grabbed you from 5 paces. A lot of the time you were bowled over by rollers and needed to use grenades to get out of room, and every door had a head monster after level 2 I think this player was either very lucky or this version is doctored.
@dickclarkfan18 жыл бұрын
It had more to do with your selection of character than the dip switches. For example, if you were the red player and wanted to clear the base, you NEVER picked Dr. Quack, he had the shortest time to clear the base. The only way you learned which character got more time was to simply play the game with every character. People that were series about a high score on Xenophobe in the arcade would virtually always use one of the yellow characters because they most often had the most time to clear the bases.

One trick you can use to clear the aliens is once you find the room with the button to pause the self destruct, just hang around in that area one screen to the left or right and keep pausing. This gives you a lot longer to clear them all.

Pick up keycard, use keycard to shut down cell door, walk through cell door without getting zapped and pushed back. Push button next to the Self-Destruct timer to pause the Self-Destruct (or on some stages, to shut it down completely so you could take all the time you needed to clear the base). OTOH, breaking the glass and pushing the button to destroy the base right then and there was a pretty dumb thing to do, as was dropping your cool gun into the trash can and getting a lousy Phaser as a replacement. 🤔
