Intex boats and toys are made from vinyl only, there is no fabric. Regular inflatable boats are made from a polyester fabric which is coated (laminated) with pvc on both sides. The strength of the fabric is determined by the quality and thickness of the pvc layers, which is either in grams/squaremeter or milimeter thickness. 1 squaremeter 1100 decitex (equal to 1000denier) pvc fabric may weigh 900, 1000, 1050, 1300 or 1450grams etc. Thicker pvc fabrics are used in heavy duty, commercial boats. (But still, hypalon fabric is strongest). Polyester fabric is produced by weaving a polyester yarn (rope). The weight of that yarn is indicated as its weight in grams per 10000meter (decitex) or 9000meter(denier). 1100decitex means that the 10000meter of yarn(rope) weighs 1100grams. In other words , 1 meter yarn weighs only 0.9grams. to calculate the weight of the polyester fabric per squaremeter, you need many other data such as thread count , weave pattern etc. but boat manufacturers never give you such information. So it may be said that boats with heavier pvc fabric are stronger. A 900decitex boat with 1450grams/squaremeter weight pvc is stronger than a 1100decitex with 1000gram/squaremeter. To conclude, you can puncture all inflatable boats with a sharp object. And don't run over your pvc boat with a chevy or toyota truck :)

Agreed, even if hypalon can take tye abuse I'll still won't do it. I thought it was a good visual to show how tough hypalon is. Thank you for the detailed comment. I'm gonna pin this one so others can read it.

I've had my 12.5' inflatable for about 3 years. It's mostly been stored deflated inside, but I've kept it in the water for a couple of months this Summer & last Summer (under cover from the sun). We just took it to the coast for the week. It was great to have along. I noticed that it wasn't holding pressure very well overnight. Mainly the air floor got soft, but the side tubes also lost a little pressure. I checked online info about leaks and found two solutions. First, check all the valves, then check all the seams. Use soapy water to check for air bubbles. If the valves are leaking externally (around the edges of the fabric) you can just tighten them up with the wrench (it's in the patch kit tube). If they're leaking internally (around the cap) you need to remove the valve & clean it or replace it. It's pretty simple. If you discover that the seams are leaking, sealants are available which you pour into the air chambers. I found 2 tiny leaking seams where the seam tape overlaps on each side tube. I also discovered a bigger leak on the air floor. I bought a bottle of ToobSeal from the marine supply store while we were still at the coast. It cost $50 for a quart which is supposed to be enough for the whole boat. (Identifying exactly where the leaks are will help me concentrate my efforts on those areas. I'll seal the air floor first since it's easier to manage & also because the leak is worse on it. I've also noticed that the support board under the floor has gotten weak and is bowing a bit. I'll need to replace it with a piece of plywood.

I see. I know that overnight, when temps go down, it may lose some pressure but it picks up when it gets hot. Hope the leaks aren't too bad.
@glennr9913
@glennr9913 2 жыл бұрын
I discovered a tiny metal splinter had caused the leak in the air floor. I removed it with tweezers. The leak was located in the rear corner. I added about 4 oz of sealant. A few drops oozed from the pinhole for a while. I lowered the air pressure to about 2-3 psi, instead of the full pressure of 10 psi, to make it easier for the sealant to work. Every 20-30 minutes I rotated the floor to recoat the pinhole & after a while, it stopped dripping sealant. I kept rotating the floor for the rest of the day to build up a thicker layer of sealant & towards the end of the day bumped the pressure to 5 psi. After a few more hours I increased it to the 10 psi full pressure. I'm really glad that the sealant worked. I'm not sure an air floor can be patched like the normal air chambers since it has a web of threads inside.

Just wanted to share a little experience with a 4000 denier "Alaska series, jet Ranger" boat which has a retail price of over $6000. I owned one such boat, so got to experience firsthand what that was like, and also the disadvantages. Like a bicycle tire on the bottom, and pretty much bounces off everything! First disadvantage is weight, as you mentioned. A small little 13 foot boat was 140 pounds. Second, a lot of these boats build up multiple layers of material, like Saturn's heavy-duty fishing boat. I bought one of those too! Tough boat! and great boat for the price! Also on the heavy side. One of the problems is when that inner layer loses adhesion. What happens is you get bubbles, and damn near impossible to fix. You can sometimes make a longitudinal slit, and and inject some glue, but it's tricky to do right. The other thing is with the rub Strake that companies like Saturn use, and Stryker boats, etc. is that rib surface is really hard to patch. The folks over at sea Eagle mentioned this to me, and it's a good point. If you want to reinforce your boat I would suggest going with a smooth surface over the rub strake. If you do accidentally get a puncture it's a lot easier to patch. I would also suggest to anybody to purchase a boat with the maximum number of chambers. I personally like boat with about five. That way it's damn near unsinkable if you get a puncture. The other precaution I take with my PVC boat is to keep it at one PSI less than it's rated PSI when it's outside undercover. Saturn boats have some over inflation valves, but a lot of PVC boats do not. I've seen more than one boat destroyed due to over inflation and the seams bursting. Air expands in heat, so if you're storing your boat outside or in a hot garage, let some air out! High heat can cause glue to dissolve, so storing your boat cool and dark is best. The hypalon is best for heat. It can take it. Great points Martin and good video!

No, thank you for such and elaborate example. I lot of folks come by my channel and I hope they see your comment. The better informed people are the better off they'll be out in the water. I am fortunate that I am able to story my boats in my room under cool Temps.

It looks stable enough to handle it. Treat Lake Michigan as if it was an ocean since it is so big. Do your best to pick days where the winds are not so rough. Stay away from the lake on stormy days. That brand is similar to Bris and Aleko so you should be ok. I wonder if they have a model that comes with a keel, it should help to handle some white caps and swells.

@dustinj7650 Жыл бұрын
this is good advice. The Tobin has an inflatable keel, and it is a class C rated boat which is an inshore rating, it can handle rough water but because you sit up high in the inflatable there is exposure to the elements.

How about fishing hook? Still tough?
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre 4 ай бұрын
Use logic when handling sharp objects. It is best to place your fishing gear on top of a gym mat or vinyl mat. Dropping a hook will be ok, but stepping on a hook may Pierce the surface.

it depends on wind direction, if it's blowing from the shore towards the sea you'll have a hard time no matter how strong you are. you can buy a 100-200 dollar small electric trolling motor with a small battery , as a backup.

Yes, highly recommend it. I use the Saturn analog pump. It uses an external power source like your car's battery or a 12v battery. I personally use an external 12v battery and charge it with my bike's battery tender. amzn.to/3vjGZOu

They can be used without the benches. What gives the boat rigidity is the inflatable floor or the aluminum flooring that some models have.

Hahaha! You're not the first to say that. I've since then upgraded to a 2012 Lexus RX450h AWD, a more capable car for my outdoor hobbies. That being said, the Prius was a champ since it took me everywhere, but I started getting into ATVs, and I slapped a hitch to the Prius. Long story short, going to those dirt roads eventually killed the poor Prius.
