The HFS are the lightest shoes I’ve ever had. I like them for running, but only on dry, smooth pavement. The tread can’t handle wet or dirt very well (and you do NOT want to run over rocks and roots in these!). I also find them a little wearing at a full 5k, and want a bit more padding (but not the princess and the pea cushioning of most running shoes). I also have a pair of Xero Terraflex, their hiking shoe, and often run in those for trickier surfaces. Plenty of grip and more cushioning (although not a lot), while still feeling like Xero shoes. A while back, I got a pair of Altra Lone Peaks specifically for trail running. They’re still minimalist shoes (zero drop, wide toe box), but with MUCH more padding than any Xeros. I found that I don’t like them for running (too heavy, too little feel), but they’re absolutely my favorite hiking shoes. I wear them any time I plan on actual rough terrain.

I also had chronic achilles tendinosis, planar fascia, and injuries thoughout out posterior kinetic chain (especially more i sprinted as a part of my daily runs). To save you trial and error, switching to barefoot shoes fixes more than half the problem. The remaining was fixed, for myself at least, by making sure I run with sufficient cadence (to minimize impact), using rolling pin on my calves after I run, and engaging in sufficient plyometric warm up routine before I run. Now I run every day of the week like a mad man, injury free 100%, and it has been that way for years. Xero shoes may not be the most stylish shoes, nor even the most minimal, but they last forever, are wonderfully versatile, and help prevent chronic injury. These reasons alone push the shoes up from an 8 to a 11, even if they were twice as expensive. Great review by the way. Look forward to your 2nd review of the hfs.

These are the most comfortable shoes I have ever found in my entire life. I own a number of these shoes and returned enough to be a bother with no problems or questions asked.. If they don’t fit or I don’t like them , pop them back in the box tape up the same package they came in and off they go money returned no questions asked. I highly recommend this company. I own 3 pairs of Xero shoes. Is the Mesa trail the water Sandals and aqua x sport. I have had the Mesa trail shoe for I'll shoot for about a year and and they have held up extremely well. I currently wear the aqua X every day and I have been working out in them as well as the Mesa trail shoe. They have changed my life and my feet. This is not a paid advertisement. I have flat feet and now my feet are so much stronger and I'm glad they have different styles because I pretty much do not want to ever wear any other kind of shoe. I'm looking at the cross trainer And maybe some fancy casual shoes.They are expensive but they are worth every penny. Another thing to note is I know where my Mesa trails when I volunteer at a horse ranch. They get very dirty but I can make them completely clean is the clean just by using soap and water in the sink.I could go on and on but if you are thinking about a pair just do it! @@incorectulpolitic I just looked them up, and they're the Ra II men's. I should clarify that for those five years, I wore them from October through late May, and then I'd switch over to sandals and go actually barefoot for summer, so they weren't in 365 day use. My husband does wear them every single day of the year for work, and they last about 1.5-2 years for him. He's also over 200lbs, and I'm around 150, so that makes a difference in the amount of wear on the soles. Also, my husband's end up with holes in the bottoms of the soles. After five years, mine had no holes in the soles, but were totally splitting from the soles at the threading in the leather.

Thanks for the review. Looking to get new ones. I have been wearing barefoot shoes for years and my feet feel so good, even though I workout multiple hours a day, 5-6 days a week, being a fitness professional. Out of genuine interest, I would like to alert you to the following. I can’t actually see your gait properly but what I think is your right foot - as far as I can understand from the part where your feet are in view (when you’re testing the shoes) - you need to work on tightness in your glute, hip and generally lateral side of your leg, it is most likely contributing to your knee/ Achilles issues, along with the disfunction you have addressed in your feet. Lower leg and foot tightness release and mobility of all the above also important. Well, have it checked by a professional anyway.

I'm not in shape. I've never run before. I'm on my feet all day in a very physically demanding job. I have nerve damage and joint pain from various injuries and my physical line of work. I just began making changes in my lifestyle to get my health and recovery back on track. My question is, are these shoes that a novice can just put on and start walking, then jogging, and ultimately running in? After watching videos of the founder of Xero shoes talk about how our feet are conditioned from a lifetime of being in the wrong shoe, I feel like you'd have to gradually transition to a shoe like this to build up muscle, joint, ligament and tendon stamina if you go from couch potato to someone who wants to start exercising by way of long distance walking, and eventually running, which is basically what I am. I'm trying to reinvent myself from couch potato to an active exerciser but I am afraid just jumping into a shoe like this to start will be too much of a change too fast for my feet. Should I start out with a pair of regular running shoes to build up my stamina and gradually go to these or can I literally hit the ground running with a barefoot shoe? Any advice is appreciated. I'm sure there's a FAQ section on their site but I want to hear it from the people who actually test and wear the product. Let's face it at the end of the day the people who own the business are trying to sell shoes, they could say whatever it takes to do that. The consumer will be honest. Thank you!
@FitnessFinance4u3 жыл бұрын
Vincent, I applaud you for starting your journey towards making yourself feel "physically better" and attacking the challenges that you currently face. As I'm not qualified to give advice to you or anyone on how to transition into barefoot shoes, I think it's best to watch a few videos on KZbin to see how others have transitioned from regular to barefoot shoes. That way you can see real people's feedback and see what they say. I consider myself to be in pretty decent shape, have been wearing Barefoot shoes for about 5 months, and I still do not run very far in them. But I do wear them every day to walk around in. And they have cured my knee pain and I don't experience any back pain when I stand on hard pavement for hours at a time (which I have to do sometimes). My feet and ankles are definitely getting stronger. I hope that helps?

@@FitnessFinance4u thank you for the response. It's refreshing to see the actual media personality answer questions directly, as I know you're busy with producing content and product testing. It's greatly appreciated. Your answer was certainly very helpful, and definitely on the right track as I have discovered after watching this video. Right after this finished, my auto play played a video where a seasoned runner talked about the transition to these zero drop shoes. It was if the algorithm God's saw my question and sent the video with the information I was seeking. It definitely is a transition, and it's highly recommended from runners who've done it, because as I theorized it definitely can lead to other injuries to just go from one to the other overnight. I've watched several videos that highly support this change, and I cannot wait to get into this and see what a difference it can make in my overall quality of life and tap into my true potential. The pain I experience from 17 years of competitive sports, ironwork, and just not taking care of myself is so bad, and to learn that going to a minimalist style of footwear can help remedy this is very encouraging. It's quite an amazing testament to the power of corporate marketing that we've been convinced that more cushion is better. Thank you again for the response, and the encouragement. Thanks JMGeronimo. I have to say I like these over my Vibram's, but it might be because I used these for at least a month before I tried my first Vibram's. So maybe I like my XeroShoes better because I'm just used to them?
@sketchur3 жыл бұрын
I like my Vibrams more, but I honestly think maybe I just got the wrong size of Xero. They feel too big and floppy to me, whereas my Vibrams feel snug and right. Vibrams fit like a glove. It's like walking barefoot without worrying about glass or dog poop. Xeros just feel like wide shoes to me.
@JMGeranimo3 жыл бұрын

I also started the minimalist journey with Five Finger shoes. However, I found Five Finger shoes had way too many limitations, such as they aren't remotely water resistant, they only 'kind of fit' my toes, and grass blades would get stuck between the toes and poke through the material! As a result, I've switch to Xero TerraFlex as my 'daily driver' shoes. The TerraFlex aren't water resistant either, but at least the material around the edges of the shoes provides for a little moisture protection where as my Five Finger did not.

@FitnessFinance4u3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out my video Christina. In order to give it a 10, Xero would need to pass a few more tests for me. I like the look of the shoe ok, but it's not the best looking shoe and I wish it were a bit more "understated" and modern looking. Also, if I felt like I wanted to wear the shoe "everyday", that would also up my score of them. They don't have a great return policy. Just a few things that would help. I have a pair of Vivobarefoot (white) Primus Lite IIs that I bought and I love them. They are probably the closest pair of barefoot shoes that are almost a 10. I just received a pair of HFS in red and the overall package of the shoes themselves, fit/finish, are very nice. My personal cons: The shoe laces are definitely too short. If I want to lace them up using the runners’ loops at the top, they’re just too short. The only other con, like you said, is the 80s return policy. At the same time, shoes are like tires: they’re wear and tear products that I honestly don’t expect returns on after a run, which still sucks because you can’t try them to their potential without putting wear on them. I did my normal run today and was over my normal 4-mile timing, but it’s my first day in zero drop barefoot shoes. My shoes before them were Ghost 12s and I started to transition recently by removing the insoles and running without them, and that alone had me 5 minutes under my normal 4-mile time. I’ll post an update comment in 90 days.

@@FitnessFinance4uwell, I’m three years too late hahaha but here’s what I can tell you: Xero Shoes is an untrustworthy company. They made my feet feel horrible, but that’s beyond the point. Please read my story. My wife worked for a marketing agency that Steven Sashen from Xero was thinking of using for a marketing strategy. They didn’t take them on because he was difficult to have a conversation with (I saw the recording and the guy’s got two faces, as most CEOs do.) During the opening segment of their kickoff call, Steven said “I just want to make to things clear: one, I don’t want to do testimonials, and two, I don’t give a FUCK about foot health.” I’m sure they’re not the only outfit like this, but based on data that I know, these barefoot companies create an artificial demand by keeping production numbers low. They’re a very niche market of an already niche market, so I believe they’re all still in business due to low output, which is why their prices are so high.

I'm a fan of Xero shoes and have several pairs. However, I wish they'd stop flooding the Internet with useless reviews from people that got their shoes for free from Xero shoes. Those reviews often include people who never actually used the shoes and rarely give deep critiques of the shoes pros and cons. Also, Xero shoes shows you how much your paying for shipping where as Vivo buries the shipping cost into the price of the shoes to make you think you're getting 'free shipping'.

Thanks Todd. I definitely do "real world" tests of all the products I review as that's the fun of it. And I can give out my personal opinion as well. Also, good point on the shipping most likely being included in the price of Vivobarefoot shoes. Makes sense. Cheers.

1) Calling them Barefoot Shoes is a misleading oxymoron because you’re literally wearing something on your feet, and it just gets in the way to a lesser extent, so the main 2 problems are toe grip and skin toughness. Also, leaving the insoles in makes it worse. 2) There’s also the company Freets (use the code “PKJ10” from Parkour Journeys), but keep in mind that they run wide and even my feet, which are Mid-Narrow had an extra thumb room of width, but definitely get them if you have wide feet. 3) Freets only have a 4mm stack height, while Xero Shoes have a 4.5mm-5.5mm stack height, so it would be better if Xero Shoes made durable trainers with a 4mm stack height or even 2mm (Freets usually have a 2mm outsole and 2mm midsole) or if Freets made narrower shoes, plus also removed the midsoles, but I’ll obviously also have to look into other brands ofc because looking at the main 2 that I know of is narrow minded.
