Hey guys, sorry for pinning this comment on all videos but I want to give you an update on the channel. I've been slowly adding a show archive to the videos including a full transcript added as sub titles and a full track listing (with links to KZbin videos for each track). I'm listening now post covid, omg this episode had me laughing out loud whilst driving alone - people must wonder if I'm insane. I don't know what I would do without these episodes, beyond funny. And somehow being '20 years in the future' makes it even more amazing, knowing all that we know now. Imagine ringing in and telling them about Ricky's fame (and Karl's!!!) - or Steve's supermodel partner - it how a virus will stop the world in 2020. Sadly Ricky would write us off immediately as a 'mentalist'. I can't wait to hear more from Ricky Anderson, surely he meets them one day????

Whether Ricky's concept of infinity is accurate or not is largely irrelevant. What's funny is that Karl takes the situation completely literally and cannot comprehend that it's a theoretical scenario. No matter what Ricky or anyone else says, he's got it in his head that the monkeys are consciously trying to type the works of Shakespeare, and it's hilarious how annoyed and angry Ricky gets at him. Just my two cents anyway.

Matthew Timberlake if it’s actually monkeys, you might be right. I was thinking of the monkeys as being a proxy for random typing. If you type randomly for an infinite amount of time, it is 100%. Because if you do it for 100 years, there is some chance you will type it, and if you still haven’t typed it, do it for another 100 years. There is some chance you’ll type it, if not, do it for another 100 years. And so on until you get it

I completely understand why Ricky always wants to squeeze Carl's head after hearing Carl try and comprehend the monkey with a type writer analogy. coughcoughsigh, and I’m no statistical expert by any means, but I think what can be frustrating about this example is when you try to rationalise an utterly absurd and impossible concept. You just can’t quantify the nature of infinity. It exists, but it’s FAR beyond human comprehension. I think Ricky says it at one point, if you gave an infinite amount of monkeys an infinite amount of time and typewriters, they wouldn’t just type Shakespeare, they’d type EVERYTHING!

Nor am I for a minute suggesting that monkies are actually ever going to sit at typewriters and type inifitiely for an infinite amount of time. I'm asking about the mathematics of it, which are quantifiable. So here's the thing, on a couple of articles I've read about this (not just Wikipedia, I know this appears on there), they use the term "almost surely" as a mathematical term. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding of this term is that the longer you do something with a random result (say dice rolling) the chance of you not rolling say a 2 decreases until it becomes 0. In other words rolling a 2 will happen statistically in an infinite amount of time. But the reason they have the "almost surely" as a qualifier is that technically, theoretically speaking, as a mad possibility, it could still be the case that a 2 is never rolled. Not likely, and statistically you can say it won't happen, but the idea is still theoretically possible. Now to my mind, the fact that "almost surely" exists as a mathematical concept demonstrates that the guy with an A Level in statistics was basically right. If there wasn't any doubt, why would the mathematical concept "almost surely" exist in this context?

It’s no more absurd than the monkey analogy despite how minuscule the odds are of it happening. I’m still more of the opinion of it being a philosophical quandary, rather than a statistical or mathematical one though.
