At 14:45 you mention there's some GUI's that go over Xfoil making it easier to make polars, etc. Would you mind sharing some insight into those? Curious what they are and how they function. Thanks and awesome tutorial otherwise.

I would recommend the Xflr5 program. Its latest version is quite stable, and you can conduct multithreaded Xfoil analysis with nice plotting. I was using it just today in fact!

Any idea on how to fix a warning that says 'poor input coordination distribution'. Apparently, there is an excessive panel angle 40.1 at i = 26. It suggests fixing this with repaneling with PANE? What does this mean and is this something I should be concerned about? Ran the airfoil a bit in viscous mode and it seems to run fine from 0 to 18 degree AOA.

Hi Dr. Hays, I am trying to run Xfoil on my laptop using a linux sub system and am getting this error to do with fonts: Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist) Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont) Serial number of failed request: 26 Current serial number in output stream: 28 I don't suppose you know the solution to this? From main menu, enter OPER to go into that menu. Then enter MACH to change Mach #

Betty C is right, but once the flow touches M1 anywhere, the model is done, so subsonic mach #'s only. I might also be a bit suspect of near transonic speeds. Low mach should be fine though.

you could go in and directly edit the point file, but it's likely easier to go grab a properly conditioned point file from somewhere else to start

I think you are trying to output useful polar data. look up the command "pacc" which is for polar accumulation. Xfoil has a nice user guide. Maybe also try Xflr5 which is a GUI interface for xfoil (and much more). It makes accumulating polars and viewing plots effortless. it's also free!

I do not see a direct way of doing this in Xfoil. oper mode can tell you velocities at a point, but some additional post processing would be required to turn that into streamlines. another code similar to xfoil called "javafoil" can do streamlines for you: www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/index.htm

from where did u download the dat file from? and how do you design a new airfoil? the upload of the same to xfoil is understood but to design and map the airfoil I am interested to learn about the same

Many dat files can be found on airfoiltools.com. If you want to design your own, you could either manually enter points and graph them, use a CAD software to export a point cloud from a spline sketch, or utilize the in-built airfoil modification functions in the gdes mode of Xfoil to modify an existing airfoil into what you want.

I had this same issue. I had to search the file in the windows explorer (entire thing) and it took me to appdata...etc folder. So search it and you will find it
