Because they're already testing 'The West' by intercepting Taiwan's allies and partners transiting through the international waters (which in spite of the global international recognition, China rejects) and airspace around Taiwan, and by trespassing into the EEZs and airspace of Taiwan and Japan. It hasn't intimidated 'The West', and it's currently the most they can do without committing an act of overt hostility (like your suggestion) that would trigger a stack of international sanctions-- sanctions China can't afford right now.

I'm 65 years old, and I've been hearing and reading the Chinese threat to Taiwan since I was a teen. It's all BS How many countries has America invaded in that time? How many dictators have they supported? They have invaded Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Granada since the '70's Korea before that too. They have supported Saddam Hussain, Augusto Pinochet, Anastasio Somoza, the Shah of Iran, all dictators who murdered their own people.
