It is one of the traditional joints of Japanese pillars.
In Japanese high-end architecture, the corners of the pillars have large surfaces.
A flat wooden plug is driven into the large surface to constrain the joint.
Since the wooden plug is not visible in front of the pillar, it is suitable for joints of visible pillars.
