I'm amazed but at the same time a bit surprised. Ok, my learning from the game comes from the anime/manga like every non-japanese here but.. Doesn't feel strange that Honda-san didn't feel even slightly happy for the fact that she became Queen and even by coming back from 2 defeats (one of them really heavy too)? I don't know... maybe i just watch too much anime..

I can’t believe Kyoko Honda won with the far left card!!! That’s usually the hardest card to get, but she was right on it! What a way to win, and as the challenger at that! She’s incredible!

Amelia T dude can u tell me the name of this game?
@ameliat30634 жыл бұрын
Mengyuan Zhang It’s called Karuta! Each card has the second verse of one of the famous set of 100 Japanese poems. The reader calls out a first verse, and the players have to hit the card with the corresponding second verse. The goal of the game is to clear your side of the playing field (so that you have zero active cards). They play with 50 cards out, 25 on each side, so there are plenty of cards that are read and aren’t on the playing field, called “dead cards” or “karafuda” in Japanese. Once a card is called (and hit/won by one of the players), it is out of play, and goes into a pile off to the side of the player who won it. When you win a card from your side, the card goes into a separate pile of your “won” cards. When you win a card from your opponent’s side, not only does the card go into your pile, but you also get to send another card to your opponent to make sure that your active card count go down. The opponent’s side of the playing field is harder to get to because your hand has to travel farther to get to it, and karuta is influenced a lot by speed. Also, because most players are right-handed (including the two players in the video), it takes longer to get to the left side of the playing field, so that side is harder as well. The card that got Honda the win was the farthest and therefore hardest card for her to get, while being the easiest for her opponent to get, so the fact that she got that card at all, even more that she won with it, was insanely impressive! Also, the match that you watched in the video was the 5th round in the 2020 Queen match. The title of “Queen” is the highest honor and rank that a female karuta player can receive, with the male equivalent being “Master” (that match was happening to the right of this one. It’s not in the video but this channel also has videos of it). The first player to win 3 matches wins the title of Queen. Kyoko Honda, the lady in the dark kimono, was the challenger facing the previous queen, the lady in the red kimono. Honda lost the first two matches, so it wasn’t looking good for her, but then she won the final 3 matches all in a row, finishing with that awesome far left card! Anyway, what I mean to say with all this is that this match was between the two best female karuta players in Japan (and since it’s a mainly Japanese game, the world), so you’d be hard pressed to find people playing better karuta. There are plenty of resources online if you’d like to learn more about karuta (there’s a TON of strategy and some rules that I didn’t go into detail about here.) Also, if you like anime and manga, Chihayafuru focuses on karuta, and is a pretty well-received anime worldwide! This game is really amazing, so I hope you do choose to learn more about it! Have a great day!

Can anyone explain the routine where they wave their hands above the cards and/or bang on the floor between plays? Is it something they do to "stay alert"? (I don't mean it when they cancel the motion, I mean after that)
@全日本かるた協会-b5m4 жыл бұрын
That motion means a practice swing, just like a baseball player swinging in the on-deck circle. Please tell me if my answer is not on your point.
