Unfortunately for China, even if it moderates its tone and becomes more accommodating, the ship has sailed on its advantages. It has also proven itself to be an unreliable partner. To rebuild trust will, as the author of the article seems to understand, take years, perhaps decades. China doesn't have that much time, just based on demographics alone. The initial attraction for doing business in China had two simple components. One was cheap labor, and the other was a large market. China no longer has either. Other countries have better demographics and more vibrant markets. Even a lot of Chinese companies have understood this and acted accordingly. The whole model of development, and the way in which the developed world operates, is to help countries move up the value chain. China has failed to do this. They are still dependent for jobs on lower tech manufacturing. Look at Japan's trajectory since WWII. Unlike Japan, China is experiencing massive headwinds before moving past the middle-income level. The so-called middle-income trap. It does not have the resources to recover from this. On top of all that, China has experienced, is experiencing, a financial crisis. They are hiding it, but is happening right now. Most of this comes back to the housing sector. The distortions in this sector are totally the responsibility of the CCP. In the 2008 subprime crisis in the US (also caused by government intervention in the housing market, by the way) real estate was overbuilt by about 2-4%. In China, the figure seems to be 100% or so. The default rate in the US was also much lower than China's. As a result of that crisis, a concept of "mark to market" accounting was emphasized in the west. In those terms, most, if not all, of China's financial institutions are insolvent. We are actually starting to see this manifest. The only saving grace for the rest of the world is that China has kept its internal financial institutions and markets mostly closed. Even in the case of financial markets, the little bit of opening up that was allowed has failed, with most western financial firms pulling out. China, like Russia, has made itself toxic to the rest of the world. There is no reason the reengage with China. Russia, at least, has raw materials that the world values. On the other hand, it turns out that the world is finding other sources for these. So, Russia's prognosis is not good either. In both cases, China and Russia, the only real way forward is a change of government, the form, not just the personalities. In both cases the current authoritarian regimes have so heavily suppressed their populations that a move to a democratic, free market system really has no leader in either. A very real possibility, in both cases, is a split into competing warlord factions. This is actually the norm throughout Chinese history. In my opinion, this is the most likely scenario. There are other possibilities, but they are lower in probability. Hey, maybe Taiwan can take over China. Wouldn't that be a hoot.
@jamesdallas14939 ай бұрын
Russia is rich in energy resources and food production. China imports 80% of oil and natural gas. China imports 30% of it food needs.

Taiwan can take over China with its economic leadership and can help chin transition into a democratic state. China, Hongkong, and Taiwan could be one China. With exports, investment, real estate and consumption all falling Loaman, a well-known Chinese economist, calculated China's GDP "growth" was -4.9% not +5.2% as claimed. Given the Yuan fell 4.2%, China's GDP fell by as much as 9.3% in dollar terms. Then given that there will be no post COVID bounce in 2024 China's GDP could fall by 10-15% in 2024, again in dollar terms. And there is no reason to expect things will get much better in 2025.

I do so much research, financial analysis, and yet everywhere I turn, even to some of the most respected investment banks, consulting firms, think tanks, publishers -- I find so many just parroting CCP statistics as if they are God's Truth. On national TV, our best newspapers. Really smart, well educated professionals. Top economists. It's like an AI system hallucinating (if you know the field you'll understand the allusion). I'm not a conspiracy guy. But have all our trusted institutions just gone to sleep? There's plenty of rigorous analysis available if you look for it, but it's just not getting out to most people who are so busy in their lives. They trust their favored media to give them an approximation (at least) of what's really going on. But instead they get such faulty, careless information. Lei and others like her do a great job. But the wide world does not hear them. SomeyI think, well I'm old, maybe it's hopeless and I should just toddle along. And Don't Look Up.
