How long did it take you to drive to Gulangyu Island from the airport? Looking to do the same thing on my layover but I don't have as cool of a tour guide as you😂

Hey Ashley! It was the weekend with no traffic so it was around a 30 minute drive from the airport to the south side of Xiamen. But then we had to take a ferry from there, and the ticketing and waiting for the ferry took another 30 minutes. And finally the ferry ride itself felt like another 30 minutes if I remember right. Taking taxis from the airport to anywhere else should be simple as long as you have the location name written in Chinese. But do be weary that getting a taxi back can involve a little bit of wait-time so leave extra time for that. Make sure you know how to say Airport AND Terminal 4 to the driver. The latter almost got me in a bit of trouble lol

It can be a little hectic for a foreigner to get around. I posted asking for suggestions on the Xiamen subreddit before I went there, and a few people told me avoid risking going to Gulangyu without a guide. Other than Gulangyu island, there's Nanputuo temple (near the end of the video) which was really scenic. You can climb up a hill to go to a temple at the top but we didn't have time for that. That is also on the south side of the island. Right next to it is Xiamen University, which some people (expats on couchsurfers.com) told me was the prettiest university in China. We didn't have time to go there during this video, partially because they only let guests in at certain times and the line can extend beyond 500 meters. I actually had a 2nd 10-hour layover in Xiamen on the way back to LA, and this time I ventured off without a guide on taxis to Xiamen University. It seemed a lot like any big US university tbh but they did have a little park with a lake/pond and some really cute photogenic ducks haha

So there are taxis outside the airport that will take you anywhere. But a few notes of caution: 1) Almost no one speaks English once you leave the airport (and very few do even in the airport) so have the names of everywhere you want to go written in Chinese/Mandarin on a piece of paper. This is very important 2) Getting taxis from the airport is really easy (the security will guide you to a line for taxis) but getting one back can be a little tricky and took me an hour during my 2nd layover at Xiamen. So plan in advance 3) Gulangyu Island (the main attraction) can be a little tricky to get to and make sure you know what you are doing, especially if you don't speak Mandarin. If you have a short layover, I would advise against it. Since I went with my friend, I didn't have to figure out a lot of the details but I found a website with great details on where to take the ferry to Gulangyu. The link is at the bottom. But to answer your main question this part would probably be helpful. From the webpage: "How to go to the Gulangyu Island from Xiamen During daytime (07:10 - 18:30 from Jun. to Sep.; 07:10 - 17:30 from Oct. to May): 1. Take a ferry from Xiagu Wharf to Sanqiutian Wharf or Neicuo'ao Wharf. The roundtrip fare is CNY 35. 2. Take a ferry from Xiamen Ferry No. 1 Dock to Songyu Wharf at the fare of CNY 2. From there, take a ship to Neicuo'ao Wharf. The round ship fare is CNY 30. At night (18:50 - 06:30 from Jun. to Sep.; 17:50 - 06:30 from Oct. to May): From Hall 2 of Xiamen Lundu Ferry Terminal near Zhongshan Road, take a ship to Sanqiutian Wharf. Hey! You should have a lot of fun! just make sure you have the things you want to communicate (like location names) written down in Chinese before you go there. No one really speaks English. And no you don't need a visa for a short layover. China provides a transit visa for people with shorter layovers than 24 hours. Hope that helps :)
