I’m living in the small town of Tulum, Mexico and recently I decided to try the town’s only Chinese restaurant. So I went and ordered in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese. The food was amazing! And it was really great to have a funny and interesting conversation with the owners of the restaurant. It was also really cool to experience Mexican Chinese food for the first time, which as a branch of Chinese Latino food more generally actually proved to be really delicious. Stay tuned with my videos as I’m practicing a whole bunch of languages here in Tulum!

The course I used initially to give me a good foundation in Spanish was called “Spanish Uncovered” by the polyglot Olly Richards, which is a way to learn Spanish naturally through stories. I really enjoyed it, and it seems to be an excellent way to get a good foundation in a new language. bit.ly/3pPB0we

Yes, I think he is super smart as well, but I think its funny when other people who can speak just as many languages start saying that to him. I know it's because he has the accent down, that's what throws them beyond his language skills alone.

It's the lower expectation of being a white American. I throw out two words in Chinese and everyone says omg omg omg, meanwhile they're speaking 4 languages/dialects perfectly. I think it's because if you're a white American everyone else just speaks English to you, so when you show you've put in the effort to learn another language, even only a little bit, they are surprised and/or appreciative.

I would love to learn Chinese!! there’s actually a lot of Chinese people in Mexico, I live in Mexicali, Baja California and we have the largest Chinatown in Mexico, so I grew up eating Chinese food!! hahahah which is actually kinda like our traditional food here! it’s everywhere and really really delicious perhaps Mexicali’s most unique claim to fame comes courtesy of our Chinese immigrants. The Chinese began arriving to the Imperial Valley region in the mid to late 1800s to build the railroad and then as workers for the Colorado River Land Company, a U.S. company that designed and constructed the extensive irrigation system in the Mexicali Valley. Many of the workers who came to the region to work, were forced to leave the U.S. after their contract ended. Instead of returning to China, many settled just over the border in Mexicali and concentrated in a neighborhood that became known as “La Chinesca.” Today, La Chinesca is the largest Chinatown in all of Mexico. At one time in the early 1900s, the Chinese outnumbered the Mexicans in Mexicali three to one.there are more than 200 Chinese restaurants that are found around the city, there’s a lot of history hahahah it will be really cool if one day you can come here and surprise them with your Chinese and taste the delicious food!! Oh and of course they also speak Spanish!! como tú!! Woahh increíble! si algún día decides venir eres bienvenido y tu esposa también!! 🤍

@@TheDookieMaster Not good in my opinion. I like street food...and in most Mexican restaurants, in China, the food is "fancy," like those fancy Mexican restaurants in the US and in Mexico. Honestly, I really enjoyed more Taco Bell( but I never eat Taco Bell outside of China) in Shanghai than the Mexican restaurants. I spoke to one of the Mexican restaurant owners about why couldn't they make it authentic Mexican...and he said it was because it is very hard and costly to get the ingredients in China. He also said that he did try to sell street tacos style...but they were not selling much.

@@_APV_ Mexico is a pretty poor country. In hub cities it might be more aligned with global salaries, but a big majority of the country is small towns that don't make much money. When visiting family me and my sinlings would be dumbfounded by how much USD gets you there. A pound of freshly made tortillas are like $1 usd. The same amount of crappy store tortillas here would be around $6+ Although, electronics and name brand clothing is around 10% to 20% more expensive in Mexico

4:33 he says something so interesting. It’s not something I’ve seen happen almost ever. He says “I Havnt seen so many” (referring to Chinese people in Mexico) this is wild because it actually shows that his native language of English is now being effected by the other languages he has learned and his time spent immersed in other cultures (rather than his native tongue effecting those new languages). An American would very rarely say “I’ve not seen so many” we would say “I’ve not seen many” or “I’ve hardly seen any” etc. But non native English speakers say “I’ve not seen so many” rather frequently. That’s how deep he is into other languages and cultures they’re effecting the way he thinks about his own native tongue
