I wish these people the best, but it has been a constant throughout human history that those who refuse to adapt and advance are eventually lost. I'm not saying that is a good thing, but just how it is. The number of peoples and cultures who are lost to history greatly outnumbers those who are even mentioned or known.

@@raggahiphop46 Not necessarily. That's the thing about spreading information, is that it can kind of perpetuate itself. You're right that it likely won't amount to anything, but it's also possible that it will really strike a chord with some people, and those people will go on to spread awareness, and some of those people will then spread awareness, etc. And maybe then it will affect someone who later ends up in a position of power, and can actually make a difference. The point is, spreading information is never pointless. It's nearly impossible to track just how much it might ultimately set into motion. Sometimes it's nothing, sometimes it's only a little bit, and sometimes it's a lot.

@@archerladyfrostSouth American culture is collective, whereas the American or Western European culture is more individualistic. This means that South Americans value the feelings of the group and relations more, wheres Westerns value their own feelings and needs over the ones of the group. A family member dying is very painful in South American culture because they were part of their collective group. I am part South American, part Western European and I really notice the difference between two cultures and how my families in both countries interact with each other. Another example of the collective culture in South America is the fact that you don't even have to be family to be considered part of it. Very close friends or far family often get called a 'tio' or 'tia' which means uncle or aunt. They are considered part of the family. To answer to your hypothetical question, death is not seemed as a weakness in South America, we also have a day to 'celebrate' death. It is called dia de los muertos. If a family member dies it is not really stigmatised to show sadness, even though men are often deemed as strong in the culture. Because family and the group has such an impact on how people there live, I think showing sadness when a person has died actually shows appreciation for them.

@@KZbinDictatorship2024 Unfortunately not. Everything uses oil, whatever product you use needs oil to at least have it transported to you. People use oil just to get to their jobs and the buildings those people work in were built with machines using oil. Literally everything uses oil in some way. While there are ways we could protest and have the oil extraction be done without the drills being directly over the oil source, it would take years to fix. Even after years of protesting, there is a good chance that nothing would change. There is already so much to protest in every country. I sit here in the US and my protest would never reach the Ecuadorian government. I could protest the use of oil, but that won't get me anywhere. Just today I seen a video of protesters in the UK having their banners ripped down. The comment section was cheering the man ripping them down. I think every sensible person understands the protesters feelings but we all know that everything we do requires oil. As a 20 year old, sitting in my leaking house, trying to make ends meet, trying to get my life together, what can I do? Protest with the little time I have? In my small town? Donate what little money I have for myself? Haha I do donate money whenever I can actually. Unfortunately I cannot help everyone. I will tell my friends about these people. We will show remorse. @@Mega-P71 I admire your perspective, especially for being 20 years old. You are intelligent and clearly a critical thinker. I am as well. You are exactly right, oil is imbedded within our infrastructure of society in so many ways it would be foolish to think we could completely get rid of it. I don’t think that’s a good idea, nor do I believe we need to stop using it. It would be nice if we would drill for oil in the massive reserves we have within our own country and stop impeding on other peoples land, culture and way of life. But I am a dreamer, and I will be honest, I have become jaded to society. Not to the people who are a part of it so much, but the people in the shadows who are on top. No GPS back then and no Internet, really, but one thing was the same~ the people in the forest were so fascinated to see an outsider. They were always friendly, and wanted to share their special food and drinks. Just like XiaomanNYC here declined their offer of monkey meat here, I declined to drink the local cassava ‘beer.’. This beer is made by a bunch of people chewing up raw cassava root and spitting it into a big pot where the saliva bacteria ferment the root starches into alcohol. Ecuadorian here, I want to give a little more context about the situation between the Taramenane and Huaoranis. These people have been in conflict for years if not decades, the have killed each others multiple times. In one attack the Huaoranis massacred some of the Taromenane and took their spears as a trophy. So, yeah, they are basically two people at war. I haven’t heard about the topic in a long time so my information might be a little incomplete, thus I invite you all to do some research about this tribes, as it can be really fascinating. I tell this because someone watching the video would think the Taromenane are the “bad guys” when in reality it is a long conflict with many moving parts and casualties in both tribes.

As history shows in many cases, often conflicts don't have a "bad guy" per se. Many conflicts are based on misunderstandings or not understanding a point of view. Not all situations apply of course, but many times we are quick to judge good guy/bad guy.

After the 4th language or so it gets much easier. You start to see/hear patterns which reoccure in other languages. For one part that makes learning of even more languages much easier, for the second you remember better/faster and can interpolate even if you forgett something. The Waorani (formerly known as the Auca tribe) were famous in the US a generation ago because five American missionaries were speared to death when they tried to make friendly contact with them. One of the widows, Elisabeth Elliot (the lady pictured in the photo), took her 2 year old daughter and went to live among the tribe, offering free medical care and forming deep friendships with the individuals who had killed her husband and his friends. You can read the famous story about the missionaries and the Waorani in books Elizabeth Elliot wrote and movies made about that moment in history (“The End of the Spear”).

@@Krthik462I recommend the book for more details. There is film of the killings as well, because the missionaries had just disembarked and set up a camera. The people of the tribe, at that time, were violent and used a powerful drug before battle. Because of Elizabeth Elliot and others they gave up the violence . I’m not doing the story justice. I heard it from an interview with a tribe member who had been part of the killing and was also part of the transformation. He completely rejected violence afterwards. He came to the US at one point and I remember him being astounded by drive through because the thought of people just handing you food through a window was amazing to him. I wish I remembered his name because the story from his mouth was like nothing I could imagine.
