I think part of the not so deep looking blacks compared to other AMOLED's Optic or super is the glass. Or the lamination process optically bonding it is why it's like that the way it reflects. Yes, it's nick picking from me and as I said, not a deal breaker. It is a better screen than the Mi Mix 2/2S!

For the mic in the video recording, i guess its only software problem. My mi4c does that too. But when i'm using third party app sound recorder to record any sound, it worked fine. No scratchy audio recorded from the mic. by the way i'm using sound/audio recorder from sony mobile communication.😄

The battery life of every single Xiaomi phone is relay on the version of MIUI, I had this Mi 8 phone with custom 4000mAh battery, and it ran on MIUI11.0.4, but the battery last only 5 hours in total screen use. Then I 'roll back' to MIUI10.0.11, the screen time became 9 hours without any issue.

Funny thing - the sound quality in videos is so bad not necessarily because of poor microphones quality. On the contrary, my Mi5 has great mics that I even used for work a couple of times making recordings for commercial use with a 3rd party app, that how good they are. The problem is the software. Xiaomi stock video recorder downsamples the audio severely, cuts off all the mids and lows and then pumps up the highs even more. That's why the sound is so shitty. And the worst thing is that just like with EIS in 4k in Open Camera - sometimes a 3rd party app will fix this issue, and sometimes it won't because ROM is somehow intercepting the audio stream and downsampling it on the go! (or not allowing to start the stabilization routine) This is so frustrating, as it's not even a hardware issue.

Yet there seems no fix for this and Xiaomi must be aware of it. Years of poor audio it's time they stopped this.

Exactly. It only adds to the frustration. With an iPhone you can just turn on the recorder and yes, video will not be of the best quality, but the voice will sound so good you'll forget you have no external mic sometimes. And with a Xiaomi phone you have to be lucky and use a third party app, and even then it's a lottery.

Nope, I wouldn't I have changed my Mi Max 2 for anything I still use it. And had the OnePlus 5T, Mix 2, 2S of course and the Mi 6X. The only other phone I like for the features and price is the Redmi Note 5, my second phone.

I bought the phone a couple weeks ago, and I also had the GPS problem where it would be inaccurate and it would then completely lose my location, but I then recalibrated the compass another time and has been working like a charm ever since, did you try that?

People are complaining that Xiaomi is making 'too many phones' these days. Yes, that's actually true but the thing that people aren't getting is that they want people to get hooked to their ui i.e. MIUI . It is similar to what Apple did and is doing pretty well today as well. Xiaomi just want to fall in every price bracket present in the market to get us hooked onto their services. I wouldn't be surprised if anyday in the future their will be subscriptions for MIUI as well.

Hi can you confirm a thing for me please? I have the note 5 but it lags while recording 4k with open camera. Takes about 2 seconds each to start and stop the video after pressing the button. And sometimes even lags while recording. Does your one do the same thing?

They are pretty much doing what Samsung did during their growth phase. Just pumping out devices like there was no tomorrow to reach every single market niche. I'll give them credit for actually supporting all those devices with timely security updates for multiple years, something most other manufacturers with higher margins still won't do.

If Note 5's camera overall beats Mix 2s then there's a high chance that mi 8/8SE's camera isnt that good enough too? Despite both mix 2s & mi8 uses the same sony IMAX 363 rear camera. Looking for a detailed & camera comparison on that 😃

When you consider the blacks on the Mi8, they're pretty good and work like a normal AMOLED panel. I think the problem is Xiaomi's cheaper manufacturing process, the front glass may be showing that grey effect on the screen. It's like when you get cheaper screen protectors for phones with a black border around the screen. Even if the screen is pretty dark on its own, it'll look grey when the screen protector is on.

The issue with the battery % not being shown can be easily fixed by manufacturers by showing the % inside the battery icon instead of showing a nonsense bar that tells nothing. My old Lenovo k4 note and k5 note had that. And I don't see it as difficult to implement in these skins that are anyways highly modified.

Is it possible to make camera comparison between Mi 8 SE and Redmi Note 5? Judging by the back camera specs it could be same camera sensor / module on Mi 8 SE and RN5. Mi 8 SE (12 MP (f/1.9, 1.4µm, dual-pixel PDAF, gyro-EIS) + 5 MP (f/2.0, 1.12µm)) vs RN5 (12 MP (f/1.9, 1.4µm, dual-pixel PDAF, gyro-EIS) + 5 MP (f/2.0, 1.25µm)). I am thinking of getting Redmi Note 5 (bigger battery, SD card support, cheaper and biger developer comunity) or Mi 8 SE (smaller form factor).
