Someone with Xiaomi mi 8 can install a geodetic application like Hi-Q set it to your coordinate system, go to a geodetic point with known coordinates, measure it and compare the coordinates and tell the results. These accuracy apps don't show real accuracy !!!

The L5 band can correct deviations of L1 band, so this GPS works when you are in cities with high buildings, or.. in places difficult to get signals from satellites.

I don't see how anyone can achieve sub-decimeter accuracy with this unless they use something like IGS Final ephemeris and clock data (which requires the user to wait 12-18 days). We are then talking about a STATIC PPP solution; not kinematic (receiver in motion). For real-time, kinematic sub-decimeter estimates you will need to measure relative to another receiver with known coordinates - RTK (real-time kinematics).

To stand in Xiaomi defense, I also have same reading in that app, but in google maps, it finds me precisely while on my old phone (Moto X Play) it misses a whole street... So maybe the problem is in app? I can definitely see better results on Mi8.

*phone GPS only works at 1Hz, and by dual frequency he meant it supports GPS and COMPASS, the actual definition of dual frequency GPS means that it receives L1 and L2C frequencies, meaning it does ionospheric delay correction, there's no way something like that is making into any cellphone, not for the next 10 years, and all civilian cosnumer grade gps including russian and chinese, work on L1 frequency*

This is not true. The Xiaomi Mi 8 features the new dual frequency BCM47755 GNSS chip which is able to receive GNSS signals in the L1 and more importantly the L5 band (most other smartphones receive only L1). The L5 band in some satellites (GPS and Galileo so far I believe) now provides a reduction in multipathing of GNSS signals (reflected signals because of buildings, canyons, etc.). This also contradicts one claim made in another comment, that the dual frequency chip doesn't make a difference in the city, because that's where the biggest difference really should be. Of course, this will also be dependant on the firmware and hardware quality (the GNSS antenna most of all).

You should've chosen Device Only. With High accuracy, you're also using network (wifi/cell) triangulation, not just GPS/Gallileo/etc.

I've been using a Garmin Oregon 600 to track long day hikes. With little screen-on time it lasts 16 hours on a charge. How many hours could I get from a good phone? (I don't have a phone to test this myself)

Dual Frequency is good when you're in jungle or bush, were gps lose signal, but when you are in the city it doesn't matter if you have dual or single frequency.

So just to let you know . First the chip is from broadcom . And dual frequency gps is better than single frequency . The software that you are using is not doing taking in consideration the second frenquency that why you don't have a better positioning. If you want to know more about the subject look for gps ambiguity its a integer number that help to determine the distance betwen you and the satellite and correction applied to that distance

well... calling it marketing hype just because it's not working currently, you're talking BS, most probably they have some bugs there (or had). I say this because your review was made in june and there is a review from september that compares Mi8 with Garmin GPSMAP 64s and Garmin Oregon 700 on a couple of hikes, and Mi 8 is as accurate as those monsters are (Garmin Fenix 5x did really bad on that trails) once again, it's not a marketing gimmik, it's not hype, it's a real thing, and we are waiting for it :)

I don't think they can actually go lower with battery consumption on MIUI honestly. I've been using many custom roms, and none was even remotely close to MIUI in terms of battery life.

Depends where you live. The closer to the equator the stronger GPS gets (and higher resolution). It gets weaker as you go towards the poles and a 5 metre range is nearly impossible because the satellites are lower on the horizon. That's where locking onto the Russian Glonass system of satellites comes in handy (or even the Chinese ones if your in China) as these are situated closer to the poles than the American GPS system (most people aren't aware that there are three competing GPS systems in place). This is where a dual GPS sensor comes in handy as you can lock onto the American GPS satellites and the Glonass system simultaneously and then cross reference between the two. As someone who lives in the U.K i know just how much the American GPS signal drops amongst buildings and trees whereas the Glonass satellites tend to be directly overhead. However, it's a trade off as the Glonass system is lower in resolution (but stronger signal) and the American GPS system is higher in resolution but weaker in signal (in Northern Europe at least).

With the same app and external antenna I get 1,8m. accuracy so it is the phone. The BCM47755 chip was tested view months ago and showed cm. level accuracy (10-30cm.). In Europe it should reach much better accuracy. This result is worst than my 3y.o. Umi Hammer .

You have to use app for GNSS. You can looking for in Playstore. The currently app now they are support only single frequency as L1. But this mobile need to running in app that support multiple frequency beyond L1 such as L5 and more. If you still use current app you will get same result for sure. Try with app support GNSS system and dual frequency then you will get much more better result.

Yeah, there is definitely something wrong with hardware, firmware or/and software. I guess, it would better to check it in 6 months or so. That should be enough time do and validate changes in firmware and software side. Also L5 signal helps when there is no direct line of sight, you have obstructions. You probably want to check those particular situations where L5 actually suppose to deliver. You can find more information in Broadcom material.

@@Techtablets did any upgrade solved something? I recently confronted an OPPO Find X3 versus a Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite, the Oppo phone had an astonishingly better precision (1-3meters), while the Xiaomi still had a max precision of around 4-5 meters.....

This is what happens when someone grey import a China-only phone, which is not designed for overseas markets. Galileo and China's Baidou constellations are much more accurate than Uncle Sam's old GPS, but it looks like Xiaomi perfected the firmware for use with Baidou for the China launch. Again - wait for the Mi 8's European launch.
