I think they both have issues with each in both misunderstandings and trauma. I also think they're both trying to ignore their own failing towards Xie Lian and looking to blame the other to make themselves feel better. :( Definitely need therapy.

I think feng xin's point in the quarrel comes from care for XL for mu qing, it's almost like he's proving a point to himself. He feels guilt for his actions, for abandoning XL when all XL did for him was unconditional kindness so MQ thinks that if he finds cracks in XL's character or that his kindness (for him and in general) is feigned, he's not have to feel guilty. In the book, MQ arrived at the palace first (very) excited to find out if XL really did kill them all [tho he did bring medicine to help xl's wound]. FX arrived to hopefully find out he didn't kill them. So, both of them do have selfish reasons for their quarrel--FX hoping XL to be good so that his blind loyalty is justified. vs MQ hoping XL to be bad so that his disdain is justified. However, I think it stems from care for XL as well, because the main reason they're angry at *each other* (and themselves) is because they wronged him in the past. I admit I'm a bit biased towards FX, but only because MQ is verbally mean towards XL a lot.

I think they both are feeling guilty at not knowing a huge portion of his history, that in the end they weren’t there. With all that’s between them, they still deeply care, but can’t really handle all of the feelings that come with that. So, naturally, they go with the path of least resistance in order to get the icky feelings out, i.e. each other.

Feng Xin and Mu Qing argue most about their royalty to the prince they was following back then, when life was difficult after first demotion, Mu Qing left first and later Feng Xin also left Xie Lian later. There's a idiom in Chinese called "(literal meaning)50 steps laughing at 100 steps", from a story that two soldiers sneak away from the military during a war, one of them ran 50 steps laughing at the other one who ran 100 steps/further about his betrayal of their country/duty. The idiom trying to say even they did to different degree and essentially they did the same (negative) thing. // So in Mu Qing's opinion they did the same thing, but for Feng Xin they actually left for different reasons. Mu Qing left when the time was difficult and no hope, for his own future Mu Qing left. Feng Xin's loyalty to Xian Lin is based on Xie Lian's being a good person that share the same value with him and is someone he could look up to. So Feng Xin stayed with Xie Lian through hard times but left after he found out Lian committed the robbery and that's not the figure Feng Xin had been look up to/agree in value anymore. That disappointed Feng Xin. // I once read from an Mu Qing's character analysis article, Mu Qing left was possibly because he has different ways of value from Xie Lian. Mu Qing doesn't like nor agree with Xie Lian being nice to others even being mistreated or insulted, he wish Xie Lian could revenge/fight back/or stand up for themselves. => so because of their difference, Mu Qing actually happy about it or he likes Xie Lian more if Xie Lian did kill Qingqiu's familiy and sees it as Xie Lian finally get a back bone to revenge. But Feng Xin is hoping/wanting to believe Xie Lian didn't do it, he respects Xie Lian for his being nice to the world and do the right things, even Qingqiu's family are royal family of Yong'an, but their generation has nothing to do with country of Xianle's end, are innocent.

Mu Qing and Feng Xin are both blaming each other about leaving Xie Lian after his second banishment, even when both of them had reasons for it (still they kinda hate themselves for it too) and they had their own life and problems which shaped their characters to be so different but they just can't understand each other and made up and are constantly arguing and putting the other down to feel better I could be more specific, but dont wanna write a whole ass book in the comments

I'm new to this, so I'm confused about a few things. Is san lang's the made-up human form of hua cheng? While reading the story i messed up a bit i guess. I somehow made a theory that san lang is not fully made-up look but the actual body and look of hua cheng when he was young and alive. And when he died, he named himself hua cheng. Hua cheng looks the older form of san lang. What I'm saying that Hua cheng just made himself look younger a bit while meeting his gege. Am i right? So he doesn't disguise into anyone and just used his younger look right?
