I made my kids watch the cuts just to show them why I keep telling them to respect sharp objects... that they are not toys, so to speak :)

Great vid. I've been going nuts about serrations vs plain for the last six months! Some people say serrations will simply slide off clothing... but this test proved differently. Thx for taking the time for this test. Very helpful.

Outstanding presentation. Having been in executive protection for 25 years, I prefer the plain edge for one main reason. The serrated edge can and often snags on clothing. Each adversary is dressed differently. For bare skin, the serrated blade is beyond devastating.

Great video, guys. You think y'all could do an update on the vaquero? I just bought one and I love seeing these demonstrations

I just ordered a 4" Talwar , fully serrated. I love the Vaquero shape but the thickness of the Voyagers was the only factor in me shying away from them. They're not overly thick but that 1/8" or so might end up being a reason why I stop using it for daily carry. I don't care how good it cuts - it won't help if I don't have it with me. They should do a Vaquero blade with a Talwar-style handle - G10 slabs with the small steel liners to support the pivot in the G10. I would pick it up in a heartbeat.

As a skater in the 90s we wore very loose fitting pants. When you slide across asphalt you were less likely to get tore up

Cold steel sells the serrations sharpener. It's a ceramic rod with small grooves that match the serrations.

Great Review. I think for EDC the Plain Clip Point is way better, now if the Vaquero was a plain edge then maybe but the Plain Clip point is still better for everyday use. I'm sorry but I don't like any serrations on my knives. Again your review answers the main questions. The "Clip Point" WINS ! Thank You.

i wonder how the Raja 2 would perform in this test. No serrations but heavier/bigger blade and nice Kukri shape. Handle is better on the Voyager but the Rajah handle is not bad.

Without your talking just from observation they look both the same in the cut result. Interesting that the serration get so easily deformed just from slightly hitting bamboo. That is also to consider for a fighting knife because you also would/could hit bone.

The bad thing about serrations in edc is that you cant work with wood - chop or carving, end of the video clearly shows that. And with voyager xl you'd definetely want to chop something sometimes - its acceptable for this task.

I'd like to see a rehash of that same serrated vaquero in the bd-1 steel and see if you still have tooth deformation after the test...

Great question! There might be a difference, but I think the main flaw is in how CS serrations are designed. The teeth are tinny and lack support, but you question is still great!
@coolsly64
@coolsly64 9 жыл бұрын
true they will still more then likely fail maybe not as easily because it's a tougher steel but by design they won't last long I think cold steel should take page from kershaw or veff serrations but I like the kershaw serrations better only because even if the tip of the point break off they tend to round off as apposed to breaking off and even rounded they are still sharp as heck and continue to cut like they used to plus both of those serrations are fairly easy to sharpen/strop if one part should start to get alittle duller then the others. I still would like to see you guys redo this test comparing the new steels cuts to the aus 8a's cutting abilities it would be interesting to see if it makes a difference and/or how much of a difference...

It might be interesting to compare the serrated vs plain edge with the plain edge at a lower grit finish (but still of high sharpness, i.e., still shaving but with an x-coarse DMT finish for example).
@chrisd933

I do think serrations will make a nastier wound and better for self defense especially with a blade like the voyager vaquero with the recurve. When you bring it down onto an attacker the serrations go in pretty well but when you pull the blade back out the serrations will make a nastier hole and open the target up more then a sharp plain edge. But it’s just a theory, I still prefer plain edge 🤷‍♂️

he thing with Cold Steel serrations is that they are a pain in the ass to re sharpen. A plain edge with a good edge could out perform a serration. Had to tell. Nice video.

I just received mine but it had a plain edge and a bit me in the index finger , blade closed on my finger lol ... The blade is pretty thin so you can get a pretty good sharp Edge on that Carpenter steel lol the knife when it's open it's 12 in Long with 5.5 inch blade it's humongous lol

they say the serrated blades cut 3x as good because they sell 1/3 as good as plain, if that was true they wouldn't be cheaper. or your plain edge must be dull

I would like to suggest learning a different fighting style because all though that could probably do a lot against people who don't know about knife fighting. If you get in a fight with someone who does fight with knives then you will easily lose your bad. The best way to fight is holding the knife with a reverse grip. keep all limbs close to your body and move out of the way till they reach out far then strike quickly. Also smaller knives can be a lot easier to hide then strike with.
