Part 1 of a rebuild video series on my friend's '74 Honda XL175 that had the top end starved for oil. We dig in to see the damage and figure out what parts he will need.

Good Job! I had to laugh at the struggle with the cam shaft removal

Thanks! It was a bit of a struggle but we managed lol

When the cam and lobes get that hot for so long then it damages the hardness of the metal - they are not cost effective to machine and re-temper unfortunately so your solution was the right one. The other cam you have is a useable solution for now but a longer term soution needs to be found really. I do recommend flushing the engine oil and filter (centrifugal one here I think) to try to remove as much of the iron and aluminium scraped off the top end. I would drain the oil, flush it through with kerosine or similar and put in some cheap oil to run it in, then change it again after a few dozen hours of use. Thanks for sharing the mistakes you made and not just glossing over them with some editing - the best lessons are often the mistakes you make on your own. If you want to build up more confidence in engne work then try to pick up some spare engines for the bike and tear them down / work out if they can be used again and rebuild them - you can always sell the good parts on eBay when you are finished to cover the costs or have a spare, good engine to use should you need it. That's how I learned, with the help of the shop manual. In no time you will have a rebuild VFR750 engine in a trail bike frame :)

There will be more upcoming videos with that bike and a couple other hurdles we encountered! All good for the learning experience.

the oil transfer holes in the head in the new remade heads are bigger, it's a good idea to open them up if you're fitting an OEM Honda head, think they are something like 5mm and reem them out to 7mm stops them from crudding up and stopping oil flow,

Good idea for sure, thank you!

Definitely need new rockers the new head should be find and the replacement cam. The main thing you have found is why it's starved of oil. You sent be struggling getting the cam chain off there is bolt on the engine which you undo which is your cam chain tensioner.
@Garage2Trail2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy and thanks for the reply and info…he ended up finding a rocker assembly online after the video posted so that’s on its way. The tensioner bolt was completely out which was puzzling to us why it still had that tension on it…so you think it was maybe due to the cam digging itself into the head or something? Thanks again!
@andyshondaxlsrestorations47332 жыл бұрын
@@Garage2Trail when you take the bolt out puts more tension on to the cam chain tensioner what you need to do it's fine something to slip inside the hole and push down this releases the tension I generally use electrical screwdriver

I had the same model xl175 the gear cog that pushers the oil to the top of the engine split in half complete engine strip down to replace it

The oiling system seems to be a weak spot on that engine. The passage is tiny and easily clogged as well.

Just picked up a similar bike! Trying to learn all I can, '76 xl175. 850 miles before it lost spark and sat. Any tips on diagnosing a lack of oil to the head? Don't have an issue myself but ya never know when...thanks for such a great video!
@Garage2Trail2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for tuning in! The lack of oil to the top was due to the oil passage in the head which got clogged with excess gasket making material from a previous owner. Make sure you keep the oil fresh and you should be good. As for your sparking issue, check the points. It might be as simple as just using some light high grit sand paper on the contacts. Also check the spark plug boot and kill switch. Check the easiest parts first!

@@Garage2Trail Thanks so much! I have cleaned the points, replaced the condenser/spark plug, and waiting on a kill switch in the mail. Ive got power for lights and horn, so hoping this heals my woes!

Dang, those look almost like original tires. A strange street/trail blend Honda put on them then. Surely they aren't are they
@Garage2Trail Жыл бұрын
Those are actually newer tires with patterns kinda like the originals. I think they are Shinkos.

What needs to be removed in order to split the case on these? Do you know?
@Garage2Trail Жыл бұрын
To be honest I don’t know for sure, but I know it’s def gotta be out of the frame and the case splits horizontally vs vertically like most modern bikes.
