My NEW film simulation presets are 40% off! theartofphotography.tv/presets/
Today Sony introduced the XPERIA 1 mark IV - this is the first smartphone with a true optical zoom lens. This lens acts as the telephoto lens offering zoom capabilities from 85-125mm in the portrait range. This is also a ground breaking smartphone with its ability to be used as an external monitor via USB-C, livestreaming video and gaming as well as audio recording capabilities. This phone is designed with content creators in mind.

The folded optics part makes sense - you can't have a longer focal length otherwise. But the zoom part doesn't make sense, as it isn't even 2x. At the end of the day, though, it works.

Interesting! Some people don't understand other phones don't have a zoom lens, but several fixed focal lengths. Everything in between is digital zoom. That's the difference here. I'm most interested in the video capabilities however. Just bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max for that sweet ProRes workflow.

Sony is always innovative be it a camera system or anything else electronic!! Now they are about to launch their Xeparia 1 IV with a telephoto 85-125mm zoom lens and I'm super thrilled that they have made a tiny step toward a giant leap in the mobile camera system!! I'm interested to know how the zoom works over a range of focal lengths sitting in the same plane; I presume, a single lens is made in such a manner, I don't know if it's true, that it's got different surface curvature to varying orientations on the same plane!! And my God, if it matches, voila, we are heading for a wide-open league of modern camera systems and a peculiar lens system too!! I'm so eagerly awaiting the fullest review of the forthcoming phone!!

Camera sensors and optics are getting bigger and bigger also you need a proper battery life if you are serious about photography and videography. A small phone in this era can't give you all the best. If you want a small phone with all these features, it actually would be a brick. To put the same hardware with a bigger phone into a small phone, they would have need to make the phone extremely thick.

@@Galadir The problem is current phone's OLED have PMW (screen flickering) at between roughly 100Hz up to 500Hz. It's too low for sensitive eyes. My macbook air with OLED doesn't have flickering above 50% brightness. So there are a few ways to correct this problem. But the problem is that it only affect a minority and thus I don't think phone makers really care much about it. Only a few in the pasts have things like dc dimming and/or no flickering above certain brightness. But now all flagship phones have flickering OLED and that's a problem for me. I won't ever buy another Xperia 1 for one simple reason. Sony doesn't update the apps. If they simply gave the updated versions of the Xperia 1 apps so older users who bought the phone for use as a camera are stuck with apps that don't do what they should and have been updated to do more in the newer phones. If people want the new hardware offered by these other Xperia 1 models, then by al means that is a good reason to upgrade the hardware, but the software? All I want is the ability to have the camera button either have an option to open up cinema pro or I want them to release the newer video pro which is halfway between the crappy default app and cinema pro, but with the ability to launch from a case button. Seriously there is no reason these obvious and simple software fixes can't be added to the older phone, because these are just android apps, but Sony is treating these phone far to much like their mirrorless line where the only software one can have access to is the version that came with the given Xperia phone, and I'm sorry, but I won't play that game. I love the phone for what it is, but will never buy another unless they solve this foolish issue.

Lol and you think apple, samsung and all the other oems don't do this 😮‍💨.... They are worse and its called planned obsolescence. It's like with ip all over again. If Sony could provide it back in 2011 for phones than so could samsung and the others but they didn't at that time. This also goes for the 4k displays.... It's just a matter of time when Samsung and Apple will do the same. They purposely postpone those feats so you have an extra reason to buy their next version. And bte the camera in the 1m4 is not a direct copy of what you find in the 1m3 And while you are being so nitpicky about the software thingy.... Why don't you question why most phones can make 4k videos but do not have a 4k display to watch it back in its original format???? Strange ain't it? Thats whats truly backwards ^^ Its obvious that it is going to be one of the next steps for flagships lol.

@@blackdynamite9940 No actually, they aren't. Both Apple and Samsung do update their apps to newer versions. the only thing that holds their apps back are differences in hardware, which is not the issue with what Sony is doing.

@@blackdynamite9940 While this could be argued as planned obsolescence, if that is Sony's reasoning then they will never have me as a phone customer again, because this is basic application software. There is no reason a phone less than a year or even two years apart can't run an identical camera app. Sure the cameras them selves might be different, but the software??? NO, that is inexcusable.

You want them to add new VideographyPro app to older Xperias? This is not just "simple software fix" by all means.
@billyoung9538
@billyoung9538 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterdurum434 care to explain why? Remember this isn't a DLSR or Mirrorless body where Sony wrote the OS to specifically work with the camera, this is Android OS which works with a very standardized development environment if one is familiar with either Java/C#. I've done app development on android, and writing a camera app uses standard libraries. I've tested and can make a camera app on my Xperia 1 that access all the cameras, and if that app were loaded on any other Xperia 1 phone it would also access the cameras in the exact same way. The only thing phone manufactures sometimes do is make certain libraries non third party accessible, meaning one can't always access all the potential features of a given camera that the phones manufacturer has access to; however, given Sony is the manufacturer I guarantee they can easily access those libraries. So I question with extreme skepticism the idea that it is difficult unless one has some profound insight into android development that I'm unaware of.
