I built one of these years ago but like your idea of the battery, mines has a 12v lead and your new style connection is better too. I made mine with a black container and leave it in the sun behind the back window so I don't need to heat the water! 😁

Just built mine before I saw this video and is almost identical other than I used standard air compressor connectors for hoses. Are very compact, self-sealing, can get stainless steel ones, and are pretty reasonably priced from Bunnings. Used male fitting with bayonet to connect hose and bayonet fitting to screw onto and hold female fitting into tank with rubber tap washers either side to seal. BTW, I chose to put my water and cable fittings on the top of the tank so not going to be in the way if use external jerry can holder or bouncing around in the back of the vehicle. Cable-tied some thin foam sheet I had lying around over the end of the pumps as these ones don't have a filter and sucking up a piece of debris could be terminal for these cheap pumps. ( I originally got one of the smaller stainless steel pumps labelled as diesel/water pumps, but they don't have the flow-rate or pressure of these grey plastic ones, unless run on 24V and then would be great) Final touch was using a sealed male bayonet fitting to seal the female water tank fitting while the hose is off so doesn't get contaminated with dust while on the road. I was planning on using the car's appliances battery but the little separate battery is a good idea.

This is certainly an option, but as I’ve shown in this comparison, other units on the market don’t have the valve in the hose connector and other limited capabilities, plus you don’t get the satisfaction of building it yourself 🤷‍♂️ Each to their own 👍

Great instructions 👍I do like the stop valve but one of the cons is that the female adapter is on the can and the male on the hose where as most standard hoses will have the female and the tap the male. This setup does make it unable to swap hoses.

@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah sorry mate, but I had a look at this video. Excluding the standard start up ad, there is only 3 ad's placed mid video. This is less than 1 ad per 5 minutes. I never started this channel for money, but this video was released in August and even with 15k views I still haven't broke even for the money spent on this project, let alone the 10's of hours than go into designing, filming, creating and editing this video. Not only do I not get paid for the hours, but I've spend thousands of dollars on 4k camera gear, audio equipment and computers to process and manage the editing. I know that this 'effort' and 'money' isn't a concern to the general viewer, but please consider that these video's cost the viewer $0 to watch and all they have to do is a maximum of watch a 30s ad every 5 minutes or so (that's if they can't be skipped). I don't ask for money, advertise Patreon or run a profit here. I'm trying to break even to provide the target audience with projects, ideas and content that will assist like minded people... All the best, Nathan.

Epic video mate never seen this done before. One thing you didn't touch in is how to fill it back up. I assume the hose is only one way for output? Would you have to just manual open the top cap and pour in water or perhaps submerge the whole Jerry can in a water source being portable.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it. So the best way to refill would be to open the black screw top near the hose outlet and pour/pump the water in that way. I guess you could submerge the pump, you would just want to keep that 5.5mm power jack as dry as possible to avoid corrosion down the track. Cheers, Nathan.

So, I am guessing that the yellow wire (unused) is a trigger wire for the pump. Would that mean to take it a step further you could run a trigger to the nozzle, and have it activate when you press it in? Yes makes it more complex but saves the pump running when it has nowhere to pump (ie tap/nozzle turned off).
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
For sure, this definitely could be an option as well. Given the low pressure of the pump, I found it ran ok for short periods of time when it was pressurised, but you are right, ideally it would be great if it came on automatically. Cheers, Nathan.

A much cheaper locally available disconnect is a beer line (homebrew) ball lock post and disconnect as used on 20L kegs. Seals are easily replaced and you know parts will be available forever- unlike Amazon stuff. A liquid post with 1/4" BSP plus stainless dip tube plus plastic disconnect is around $20. A separate option is just use a 10L or 20L ball lock keg and pressurize with your air compressor, though the round shape might make it harder to fit, but they're not much thicker than a 20L jerry.

I had a lot of fun doing this over a weekend. There were some follies like getting the clear tube lost inside the jerry can but I finally got it all together and it works - kindof. I do think the pump could be a lot more powerful. As it is, the stream is more like a strong urination than it is a spray. It might be that my coiled hose needs to be cut down? What do you think.

Love the idea and thanks for the parts list. I assume the pump would be running all the time that the battery pack is switched on. @XploringOz

Hey mate, yes the pump is running constantly when switched on, so it would be advisable to switch the unit off between use. Given the simple design of the pump and the fact that it is left on during stationary flow, it can handle this for some time, but I would assume that leaving the pump running unnecessarily for a long period of time would shorten the pumps life. Cheers, Nathan.

Great video mate. A (dumb) question. When you press the spray nozzle, the water comes out. When you release it, is the pump still running?
@XploringOz

Cheers mate. Yes, this compact style of pump means that it will continue to run even when water is not being dispersed. It is designed this way, however it's good practice to turn the pump off between cycles 👍

Would it be possible to do this with all fittings through the cap? Multiple water jerry cans and only 1 submersible pump. Change the lid & pump Co bo from jerry to jerry?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
I like the idea, potentially possible. It might be hard with this particular brand as I don't think there would be enough room on the cap without interfering with the seals, but maybe a wider brimmed cap?

Maybe try some translucent bathroom sealant or something of that type. That will fix it together and provide a seal too.

@XploringOz

Negative, this particular pump will run whenever it's switched on. I'm sure you could add a pressure type pump, however I haven't looked into this. Given the low pressure and the design of the pump, it can run with flow for some time before wearing out. Cheers, Nathan

@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
The pre-fab one was from OnTap Products. Although their product is OK, there management and customer service could do with a review. Despite intentionally not releasing the brand of the pre-fab unit in this video, the scathing email I got from the company was horrible. Definitely not a company I'll ever consider doing business with again.... disappointing. Cheers, Nathan.

I’d be careful of those cheap eBay submersible pumps. They only usually last a few weeks. A decent quality one will cost you around $90 in Aus. Quite an expensive project if your pump fails.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Potentially, I'm yet to test the longevity of the pump as its a relatively new project. This being said the project isn't completely wasted if the pump fails. Replacing the pump with a good quality one will only set you back the $30 you lost on the cheap one. Either way, the pump can be purchased to suit each buyer. Cheers, Nathan.

@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
@@BanksPhotography The same limitations as the comparison at the end of this video. The cord limits the distance it can be used from the vehicle and the hose connector is straight through. Meaning that when the hose is not connected, the system is not sealed and can/likely leak depending on how full the jerry is. No deal breakers, just a different design.
