I built a portable shower using a pump up garden sprayer and I found that the spray head for a kitchen sink worked really well for bathing and rinsing. It was pretty economical with the water because the head is so small in diameter, but it also managed to provide good pressure. It probably wouldn't be too great if you planned to use it to blast mud from your vehicle, but for bathing it's hard to beat. It is also very small.

I have been using a pump up sprayer tank for 20 years now. I placed a valve on the output hose followed by a quick disconnect connector. I have a car wash wand, a shower head, hand sprayer, a sink... Etc.

After several trips of personal use of this portable shower system, I give it 5 stars. It replaced my rinse kit which was impossible to refill while on the trail and awkwardly shaped when packing. Beyond showering with it; I’ve used it for cooking, cleaning, washing my dog after rolling in a cow pie, and even washing a sand rail after an unfortunate passenger couldn’t contain there stomach contents.

For sealing the fittings, I would use 3M 5200 Marine caulk, it will maintain more flexibility. I use it to seal leaks on my plastic kayaks.

@SandyCats i ended up building the same can with your recs. However, I also installed a waterproof switch toggle on the top of the can. If you send me a place to send pic, will be happy to share so others can see. Next time, i will add the switch to the cap itself so that all you have to do is swap out caps and would not be limited to the can that has the switch. Have to admit though the switch is legit!

If I purchased the HFCD16857 bulk head, what would I need for the male quick disconnect part? There are different types. That bulkhead is for an 1/2 inch pipe which fits my pump. Any help appreciated. Don’t enjoy working with pipes. I’ve seen part HFCD22857. Would that work? What description am I looking for? Like if I wanted to switch it to a 3/8 for the male part.

Looks like a great DIY system. I'm going to review your material list and possibly put together my own. For me, I would use a 12v RV immersion heater and hook up both that and the pump to a small 12v motorcycle battery. Still portable, but far better water heating capability.

question? how long will that 5 gal last you showering? Do you normal turn it off and on while showering ? then a few things i thought of if you bring a jackery or something like that they have 12v plugs. the other thing i was thinking is some way to plug into the shower hose connection at the tank when not in use like when its on the back of your truck to keep mud and dust getting in it like some kind of rubber cap or something maybe not a huge deal not like you will be drinking that water. My last trip last week was a 14 day trip with myself, my wife, my 17 year old daughter, my 4 year old and my 2 year old. We took showers 4x on the trip. each time we used anywhere from 7-8.5 gallons of water for all 5 of us. I personally keep it on the whole time but I'm fast. Everyone else turns it on, than off to soap themselves, and then on to wash off. All times wife and daughter washed their hair as well. The shower system has a battery pack. The pack lasted us for the entire trip on daily use. We keep our jerry car on the outside of our rig. We DO use it for drinking water as well. The way the connections work... it prevents dirt/dust from getting into the system.

Just a couple tips: Try putting the gasket on the inside not the out side. The grommet is actually called a CGB or cord grip body. Try a 12vdc diaphragm pump. They are self priming and have higher flow rate 2.4-4gpm. Great design though! And very practical.

As much as I prefer the looks of an OD Green Can, I think I'd get a black can for use with the shower for a bit of solar action. That being said, the thirty gallon tank inside my white cargo trailer conversion is warm in the afternoon on warm weather trips when a shower is really appreciated, so the OD Green can in the sun will probably be fine. I also use Mando Deodorant when I'm going to be in the field. I use the unscented version because I'm usually hunting when I'm using the trailer.

All the RC batteries seem to be 7.2 or 11.1v. Some are NiMH or LiPo. We would want 12v LiPo, I would think, but I don’t see anything like that

​@@davemyronthose are just nominal ratings. Voltage will vary between 3.0v to 4.2v per cell depending on charge. A fully charged 3 cell lipo battery will be 12.6v, which should work for something like this.

The connectors you need are Anderson power pole. The come from35-40 amp rated to 600 amp rated. That is the standard for DC connection for Ham Radios, also people use the 600 amp connectors for jumper cables And quick disconnect cables for receiver mount winches for front and rear mount winches. Work really well, and easy to source. Great build video, appreciate you taking the time to do the video.

Build your own water filter system. Use your pressurized water tank to pump water from one tank to another or just pump water from the source through the filter system. I recommend the 3 stage filter starting with a string filler, second filter should be a fiber filter, followed by a carbon filter, then if you must use a ceramic filter in a cartridge you build from PVC pipe and fittings. Take two buckets and create a Berkey style filter tank. Instead of gravity for delivering water to the ceramic filter; pump the cleaned water into the ceramic filter no waiting no fuss. I have my design I want to see yours.

I just find it so much faster and easier to boil 1 gallon of water and mix it in. With other heaters (including other shower companies) usually takes anywhere from 45-90 minutes to heat up. Boiling takes 5-10.

How has the epoxy held up over time? Using epoxy with HDPE plastics is always temporarily unless you sand down the plastic and use some type of primer/harder. I know this because I used to work on kayaks, and this scepter jug is the same HDPE plastic as the kayaks. Another question, after shaving the plastic notch off the colder fitting, why did you not use the rubber washer instead of epoxy? Seems like the nut would clamp it down enough, but I dont have it front of me so idk.

Regarding washer. The curve on the lid is too much for the washer. We tried other washers but they didn’t work either as thicker ones were too stiff and eventually started to leak. After 2 years one three units one did lose its epoxy seal. That one did take a lot of abuse though. Over the last year we started selling these and do sand them down now. We also just got our first batch of custom washers on Friday. I plan on testing over the summer then including them with out kit and offering them up for $3 each.

@@SandyCats I may want to buy one of those washers off you! I'm currently building my own using the 2.5 gallon scepter. I also plan to use the bigger 12v comet pump, and a larger 12v 6A talentcell battery. I'm not going to be selling them or anything, but I want mine to be bullet proof, and also have more pressure than the blue german pump. I also will house the battery in a plastic waterproof case, stuck on with outdoor double sided tape. Those talentcell battery shouldnt get wet they can catch on fire if shorted. I posted a video on my youtube page, however I've made several revisions to the build and will post a "how to" soon. Did you know colder makes that fitting in black? I'm waiting for mine to arrive so I can complete it.

@@hi-filuggage13 regarding the black fittings. It uses a stiffer plastic so it doesn’t work as well with JB weld. Would with washer. Regarding larger pump… it won’t help as the talentcell will limit the power for it to work better. You’d want to use a better battery pack to get the benefit. In reality you can even get more pressure from the pump we use with a stronger battery pack… but you will go through water faster. To me it’s a balance of pressure vs water consumption. Regarding fire… I’d need to proof… tested these in crazy environments including 30 days in monsoon season intentionally to try to find limits of battery. Seen failures in my testings…. Haven’t seen fires. The only weak point in my build is going to be the battery. A good and battery will be about 3x the cost…. So again…. Balance.

I got the megawise jump starter. I plugged into the DC output jack with the recommended cables in the video description. The non USB (round output 3) jack is made to push from 12-16 volts/10amps. I put my meter on it and got 14.3 volts with the megawise 3/4 charged. (It may go all the way to 16 volts after a full charge, I’m not sure of that yet) The point I’m trying to make it that the german 12 volt motor is only rated to run continuously at 12 volts. So running higher voltage than 12 would make the motor run harder and spray water farther but I don’t know if the motor will eventually fail under the higher than rated voltage. If you have any long term usage with the megawise battery please let me know if the motor has handled it. I’m still going to keep the jump starter because I probably need it for the car, but I will probably buy the 3000 battery recommended (but I’d rather use the megawise if it can handle it) Thanks!

Unfortunately I do not have what I would call "long term usage." On my system I would say I have at least 3-4 hours of usage with the jump starter. I usually use the regular battery pack for almost everything. I only use the jump starter for showers for the family. During those showers it will run on/off for about 30-35 minutes (2-3 kids, wife and I). I would say we have done that 6-7 times with the same system and it still works. Hope that helps a bit. HOWEVER, what I will do (out of curiosity since I have extra motors lying around from testing)... is run two motors continuously until they burn out. I will do one with each battery. I'll have to do this at the end of the month or next month as I'm packing for a 3 week overlanding trip right now and leaving in a few days. I will keep this on my to do list and report back via this comment and on my website.

I am finally done with testing! It took a few months because I was only able to test for a few hours a day... than charge the battery and plug it in the next day. Both pumps and the motor lasted for 100 hours of usage. After 100 hours the motor still worked fine. I gave up at that point as I am more than happy with 100 hours. I also learned that the motor is rated to run at 15 minute increments but in reality has no problems running for 2 hours non-stop. Lastly... the Talentcell battery is really the weak link. Initially I had 4 continuous hours and slowly started to drop. At day 5 it dropped to 1.5 continuous hours and stayed there for a while. At about 60 hours it was only giving about 45 minutes of continuous charge so I replaced it. Hope this helps!

I make the same portable shower concept but with different parts. For hot shower, I add an additional heat exchanger from PC cooling part. Connect the heat exchanger to the quick plug (pump) and water return to another quick plug on the container. Use stove to boil the water. Once water hot enough for bath, unplug the heat exchanger and plug in the shower heat. It take 10-15min to heat the water. If you need the picture of the DIY, let me know.

Two pots is usually enough to make the rest of the water perfect for a really hot shower. We are playing with an instant (propane) hot water heater for this setup as multi-week trips my wife wants hot water for the sink and other various uses. Doing a final test run (3 week overlanding trip) next week. If all works out, plan to make a new vid.

The system you have built works well and has been around for a long time, I have seen them with both air pressure, hand prime and sub pump, the whole point is its a low-cost option that works well, the items you have linked to are way overkill, eg your fitting on its own is 60$ so with the pump at 40$ then the can battery etc a build that is far more expensive than it needs to be. Nice unit though better looking than mine but works the same! Happy camping, stay clean

I wish I could agree that a lower cost option would be equal. I've tried them but was not satisfied. I've had multiple people order these from me to replace their waterport solely because they hated the hand pump. I also tried other (cheaper) fittings (that allow multiple attachments) but found them to eventually stop working when my canister is mounted outside the vehicle and I'm doing 100's of miles in sand/dust/dirt. This specific fitting seems to work forever. I tried to built a unit that work extremely easy and is really built to work in difficult environments (you can see current use on my wise sandycats.com).

Helpful Hint: You can eliminate the J-B Weld by using a Heat Gun. Heat the CAP/LID thoroughly around the CPC Hole. This will relieve the curvature on the lid and flatten the spot out enough to tighten CPC fitment. While the LID/CAP is still Hot inset and install the CPC fitting and tighten thoroughly which will allow the Lid to cool and form to the CPC. Leave the black seal OUT at this stage. When they cool together (CPC&LID) the gap of the curvature GREATLY diminishes. Once cooled install the Black Seal and it lies flat. Tighten thoroughly. You can always go back and add the J-B Weld if need be but mine did not leak after this technique. I add the Lid/Cap to the Can while Cooling. (use Heat Gun at your discretion! ) This is only for the CPC fitment not Electrical Grommet.

Per the FDA, yes. But if you do this right, the contact with the JB weld should be minimal or non-existent. We will have a new video coming out in about 2 months with many updates including elimination of the JB weld. Had a lot of testing and updates over the course of 2 years.

I use it with JB weld for drinking water all the time with no concern to be honest. The washer was developed more for easier installation. But I only have a few. We will get a large batch in 60 days or so and will sell them for $3 each. I know that doesn’t help now though… sorry.

I see that comet pumps makes a 20L/min 12v that can still fit in the lid. This hooked up to the megawise 1500 car jumper would increase water pressure right? What would be a downside other than quicker depletion of water?

My first pump is going on 3 years now and still kicking. Only thing I tend to replace is the clear tubing about once a year as it gets hazy. Honestly I don’t do anything to maintain the pump…. I’ll clean out the scepter with warm water and a bit of bleach and run that through the pump. Then a bit of soap and water. I do that after every few trips.

Thanks for detailed diy instructions. Have you tested out the Kick Ass portable shower. I have not but it's very compact, affordable, and seems to work well from the YT videos I've watched. Also, have you tested the higher output Comet VIP Plus 1430.12.00 pump with your configuration?

The kick ass I did not try out. It doesn’t give me the versatility I need to be honest (fast access to water for general use). However it looks like a very very reasonably priced system for what it is. The VIP comet will burn out faster with my system. The limiting factor is the battery pack I recommend for the run time I get. Higher output would require a different pack and would eat through water supply faster. From personal use and some trial tests with friends, I found this pump configuration to be a good compromise of pressure vs water conservation

Need some help.....so I bought all the pieces, got the German pump but I have almost no pressure. When I plug it in, the pump runs, but only a trickle of water comes out. I've tried different batteries, but same results. Any suggestions of what I'm doing wrong?

@@SandyCats after reading your comment, got me to take a second look at my electrical connection. I was using a USB connector and I think the wire was just too small. Switched out to a "cigarette lighter" type connector ( has bigger lead wires) and that fixed my problem. thanks for your input here as I now have pressurized water for our upcoming Jeep trip. Thanks again for the great info.

I’ve found multiple stronger options since. But decided to stick with the talentcell as the power (for me) is a good compromise to allow me to conserve the water.

After building over 100 of these now for customers; the way I do the wiring is as follows: 1/8" marine heat shrink for +/- connection. 1/4" marine heat shrink for entire exposed wiring. 1/4" braided split sleeve wiring loom over entire exposed wire; sealed with 3/8" heat shrink on tips.

Zero issues. You’ll melt the scepter before hurting the pump 😂. But yea… be a bit careful with pouring boiling water in as I did melt the scepter a bit once

It's been tough recently. If you order from freshwatersystems.com they usually can get it within 40 days. I am ordering in large quantities now to get stock. I would offer to sell you one... but I ran out of stock myself (more orders than expected) and won't have any for another 20 days or so.
