So there is some crucial information that the video left out that I will try to explain as simply as I can. The CLR was just a massively flawed design that was unfixably dangerous. It had a really short wheelbase- which is the distance between both the front and rear wheels. This is to make the car faster through corners, but it can lead to complications if the wheelbase becomes too short. In this case, this caused further issues. As a result of its short wheelbase, the CLR also had a huge amount of what is called overhang- which is the portions of the car behind the rear wheels and in front of the front wheels. This caused the car to become extremely pitch-sensitive. Pitch is the see-saw forward motion of an object pointing up or down. For example- when an airplane is taking off, the pilots lift the plane off the ground, and it points upward to go higher. When a plane points up or down like that, that is its pitch upwards or downwards. So when a plane takes off, it is being pitched upwards. So we know that when a car accelerates, it squats- that is the back of the car goes down lower on the track and it is pitched upward- and when it brakes, it dives- pitching it downward. But the public roads used for the Le Mans track in those days had a tendency to dip up and down slightly, following the natural contours of the land there. The slipstreaming effect there is explained- a car creates a hole in the air that another car behind it can get into and go past the car in front easily because there is less resistance from the air thanks to the car in front. So when the CLR got into the hole in the air created by the Toyota TS020 in front of it, this happened at a part of the track where the road dips up and down. So when a car is in another car’s “hole”- that is its slipstream, it loses some downforce while in that hole. So when the 2 cars went over this small hump, the CLR got right behind the TS020, and when the road began to fall away, the CLR went over this hump, and because the CLR was pitching too far upwards thanks to its short wheelbase and resulting excess overhang, this caused an aerodynamic imbalance. Because there wasn’t enough downforce at the front of the CLR at that moment to keep it stuck to the road, too much air got underneath the CLR’s front, and this was enough to lift the nose of the car and send it skyward and into the trees. Those cars have to run as low as possible to the ground in order to have as much downforce as possible- and the underside of the car is shaped to ensure that. An airplane wing is shaped in such a way where the air has to travel a longer distance on one side of the wing, creating a lower pressure on the top of the wing to ensure that it creates lift and that it gets the airplane into the air. In these car’s sense, those same type of wings are turned upside down, to promote lift in a downward direction.

Mercedes-Benz is always a staple and I love the brand. Today always been a customer to the brand and it's ever great levels of safety. Survived two car accidents and walked with a scratch or none. Terrible drivers out there and the brand is amazing in terms of safety and status.

The Messerschmidt 109, the most produced fighter in history had a Daimler Benz engine, while the Messerschmidt 262, the worlds first operational jet fighter was powered by a BMW designed engine. Meanwhile, Porsche was busy designing and producing tanks.

So basically, in order for the car to produce downforce you need constant airflow, but at high speed when there's another car directly in front, it punches a hole in the air leaving you without the airflow necessary to generate sufficient downforce. At that point the little air you're getting is severely disrupted and it completely messes up the airflow and in some cases makes the lift so high it sends you airborne. In racing there have been many instances where someone is purposely designing their car to mess up the air behind it as much as possible so that the car behind cannot overtake. It is cheeky, but also very evil.

Also at 13:21- that is the Mercedes CLK LM- a non-road legal racing car that was based on the CLK GTR, a road legal homologation special built because the FIA, the governing body of racing said that a manufacturer had to make 25 road legal examples of said car before they could make a racing version of it. The CLK GTR is an exceedingly rare car that will go for mid to high seven figures at an auction.

The long overhang nose of the CLR, at almost 0 angle of attack generated lift instead of downforce when the car went over the "hills" at the end of the Mulsanne and Indianapolis straight. Slipstreaming only made it worse, as it disrupted air flow from reaching the parts that generated more downforce.

Ah yeah, Le Man`s. "A Race in France, made by the British and dominated by the Germans." The 1955 accident was so bad (83 dead + the driver dead and over 200 injured), that it nearly killed motorsport in general, which led to improvements in safety stuff in and around tracks worldwide (and the ban from circuit racing in Switzerland with the only exception of Go-Kart racing).
