More info on the XReal Air and Beam combo: bit.ly/3Q9LVku I totally goofed on the section talking about price! The Beam will sell for $119, and the combo of Beam + Air will sell for $488! Hit the link for more info! UPDATE To address a completely fair concern of my video here, my section on compatibility IS really clumsy. I was trying to illustrate that MOST of the issues people have encountered have been because of phone manufacturer decisions, and the two biggest offenders in my opinion have been Apple and Google. Beam address similar issues for nearly every other product, but my example of Pixel phones is confusing here. Google is now the main "problem" manufacturer, where there is no support for cabled or wireless mirroring on a product like Beam. I absolutely did NOT make this as clear as I should have in this video, and with any product I showcase, I HIGHLY recommend digging into more info from the manufactures, which is why I include links to their websites. Specifically for the BEAM, XREAL has a great FAQ clearly detailing the compatibility and limitations of using BEAM with multiple different devices. www.xreal.com/support/beam I appreciate the feedback on this video, and will try to include that kind of detail in future videos. 👍

I think Xreal made this because of iPhone. At least iPad does support video output, but not iPhone. I still believe video output should be a mainstream (or dare I say it, mandatory) feature for modern smartphones. Smartphones of today, even in the midrange segment, are still more than powerful enough to be a true pocket computer.

I do understand what Xreal is doing with the Beam, but I do think the next generation of Beam should have three USB-C port. One problem I see with the Beam is that it only leaves a single USB-C port for wired video out or charging, and it can't do both. Also, it'd be great if there's a 2.4/5GHz USB-C transmitter puck to connect the glass and Beam wirelessly together.

What annoys me about the Beam is completely out of XReals control. For one, the need for the Beam in cases such as the iPhone, OnePlus and Pixel. I have held strong on my stance and won't buy a mobile device whose main port is castrated solely to sell peripherals. For another, the restrictions and general poor performance of Miracast. Having used a Quest 2 wirelessly with my computer, I can attest that incredibly low latency (low enough to play through all of HL Alyx without motion sickness), hiqh resolution video streaming with 20m distance from the endpoint is easily possible and has been for a while now, but the Miracast standard, targeting the lowest of denominators, simply does not support that and in general has not been updated in terms of specs, arguably, since its release, with only some interoparability enhancements being added. That also happened almost a decade ago though, so maybe we need a new standard.

Been using XREAL air for my steam deck and loving it. Best companion device for the steam deck. I have been wanting to use the XREAL air for work as I usually use 2 to 3 monitors but the fixed screen just made it to hard. I couldn’t move my head to look more closely at something or have to look under the glasses to see my laptop display. I am super excited to try out the beam and hope that it finally makes it usable as a second monitor. I am really hoping they will update the beam with software that will support split screen on a windows computer. Once they bridge that gap I can see other work colleagues buying into it. It will allow privacy, portability and reasonable cost for a multi screen work station on the go.

@familyceradini7461
@familyceradini7461 Жыл бұрын
@@iamajuthomas Yes, using for the first time today as an extended monitor. The ability to fix the monitor in place is great, though I do feel a little queezy due to a slight blur effect when you move your head and the screen has to keep up. You also get a little distortion looking through the birdbath lenses to your other monitor. Is it better than without the beam, yes. But it not quite smooth yet. Hopefully with some software updates it will get better. Still easier to user set monitors but will use this on the go. Also I am using a work computer and had no problem hooking it up and creating an extended monitor.

I just need to understand the charging capabilities and requirements. Can I have a charger (let's say infinite number of usb-c PD ports with maximum wattage allowed by devices), plug into my laptop, laptop usb-c -> beam, beam usb-c -> glasses. Will all three devices stay charged? If not, what solution will allow me to permanently run all 3 devices? Even if I have the charger plug into the laptop, and have a separate charger port plug into a device that accepts usb-c PD and usb-c passthrough (from the laptop) which is connected to a beam, and a second device which accepts usb-c PD and usb-c passthrough (from the beam) connected to the glasses, would that work to keep all three devices charged? I'm absolutely willing to have a clunky setup for a permanently plugged in solution. The wireless / on-the-go stuff is great as well.

The majority of their development seems to be focused on the desktop apps at present. It's easier to make a virtual monitor for Mac and PC, than make a virtual alternate desktop mode for Android and force android apps to play nice AND count on the user to dog through dev options to enable things like floating window support. It sucks, but the current dichotomy remains. Either the manufacturer does the desktop mode heavy lifting, or you do screen mirror or Nebula is a basic tool for web browsing and first party games. It's why beam was created. To add capabilities to things like basic screen mirroring.
@SomeGadgetGuy

I've seen the complaints, I still feel beam brings to the table what it primarily advertises. The claim is it adds the compute power to use the head tracking sensors for static displays. The product satisfies those claims, and it has the POTENTIAL to do more with future updates. People complaining about all the things it can't do, some of the complaints are valid in my opinion, like giving us more options for tracking and smooth follow. Some are interesting misrepresentations of the product. Like the people mad about power pass through. To look up the specs on this box and think it would somehow be capable of passing power to a steam deck, that's on them. Xreal in no way primed people for that expectation. I'm happy with my collab with xreal. As MR headsets get more attention, we'll have to deal with two ideas. A headset built all in one piece, and a modular compute headset, where the glasses and the computer and the sensors are different pieces. Each has pros and cons, but is it any surprise that the most recent Microsoft patent is for a modular headset, with glasses separate from the "brain" that powers the head tracking and room analysis?

@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy Жыл бұрын
Oh I'm never a huge fan of wireless for heavy use. Best case, your frame rate hovers around 30fps, and that's only if you keep perfect line of sight. Apple MIGHT work a little smoother, but that's only because airplay requires both devices to be on the same network. Apple won't allow a device to device pairing.

Great video! Viewing the Beam, it looks like there are only 2 USB ports? If you hard wire your phone to the device in one port and plug a battery into the Beam in the other port, will it charge your phone through the Beam? (Seeing if this would duplicate the Rokid Hub from a charging perspective). My main concern if it doesn't support that charging ability is that for phone users we're in the same boat, I don't have a way to charge the phone while using the Xreal glasses and potentially adds another device I would need to charge?

As nearsighted person i prefer the rokid ar max because i dont need to buy additional glasses for me, my family or any other person who is interested to try it thanks to dioptrie adjustment. for nreal i need to say, i absultely dont like the air one but i love the nreal light because it has handtracking and a better AR experience but when choosing the nreal air or the rokid max, i will go with rokid max because of helpful dioptrie adjustemnt and the compact rokid station all in one android tv box controller in your hand with great batterylife, the 120 hz are also a good bonus.

Put a pair on Taylor Swift or Lebron James and I’m sure the world will follow. I preordered my beam and glasses combo about a month ago. I’ve been checking them out for awhile, but the beam is what really made me pull the trigger. I believe XReal is heading in the right direction with this. If they load steaming apps directly to the beam like Netflix, KZbin, etc., people could put down the phones for a few hours and kick back with the beam in their pockets and could consume some of the same content while you’re phone is resting. An Apple Watch, some AirPods, and a pair of XReal Airs with apps loaded on the beam and I wouldn’t need a phone.

It does and it doesn't. It's not supposed to be like VR. I think it's funny when the main use cases shown by apple for Vision Pro are "float a TV in your room, and waste a TON of resolution on your peripheral vision". The center clarity of these glasses would then nearly match the floating window clarity of vision pro.

I tried the Xreal Air's but the edges of the screen were blurry/fuzzy. I tried all the nose pieces and tried each angle adjustment on the frames with each nose piece. I do have a big head. Snap back ball caps I can barely get it to snap on the last snap. With the Xreal Beam is there an option to just make the screen a tad smaller? Instead of a 201" screen how about a 190 inch screen? I can't find any literature on that specifically. Thank you.

Yeah, you can force the glasses to use less of the field of view. Your experience is EXACTLY why I think we're doing AR wrong. Going to the high end with goggles means we don't learn more about different faces and eyes and use cases. We should have iterated more on Google Glass style heads up displays. Face computing is CRAZY PERSONAL. The better we want the experience to be, the more we need to tailor fit the displays to the user's face, but then we can't resell them easily.
@TwoRMSquared
@TwoRMSquared Жыл бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy Yeah exactly. The only thing I could do to get the glasses to give me a half way decent experience was to remove the nose piece all together and push the glasses right up against my face. @SomeGadgetGuy

EXACTLY that. We still can't make a broadly compatible earbud that truly will cover "most people". How tf we gonna account for every face??? I hope we get some options to fit you better in the future. Or at least a program to better customize the fit for different faces.

JuanBagnell, Yeah, the XReal Beam is one of the next steps I was waiting for. Higher Resolution is the next thing. Now sure, I wouldn't scoff at buying the NReal (or XReal) glasses now (had to hold off when both NReal support and Samsung support proper let me know my brand new Galaxy S23 Ultra wouldn't be able to power and transmit video with just one cable plugged into the glasses), not to mention, I can't use a USB portable monitor if it doesn't have it's own internal battery or the monitor plugged into a power outlet (though I've seen videos of an S23 Ultra doing this; I guess it's just mine :( ). Still, with the Beam, my phone should be able to now work with some AR Glasses, SO COOL! As you said, resolution isn't the end all and be all, but I REALLY, at some point, would like to watch a movie in full 4K using AR glasses. Until then, when not portable, I'll still have to rely on a projector that can output at that size and resolution. Though I am excited to see what Apple brings to the table, because they might have a solution where I can ditch the projector for that big screen and high resolution, they've deliberately priced themselves out of a normal consumer market. And I'm not interested in seeing a watered down, lower priced (yet still expensive), future version they're planning, unless they can keep the specs I care about top notch (just get rid of the creepy eyeball casting outer display). I'm much more interested in this tech becoming lighter, portable, and more convenient. XReal and others are leading the way while Apple stays in their boutique territory. Can't wait to jump in at some point. vgv

The thing about vision pro, you still aren't watching a movie in 4K. If you float the movie like a tv, it's closer to 1080. I'd love to see that micro OLED in the Vision Pro used in a premium glasses with a narrower field of view.
