I LOVED the standard version without any tracking, but now we've got a legit direction on better stabilization and head tracking. It's a SOLID step for this category.

i own the nreal light 6dof, xreal air + beam 3dof and i have to say you always do the best job explaining this tech to people . 3dof is great but i remember 6dof was wild being able to pin several videos and images and walk around and behind them is the craziest experience i even tested walking out of the room and back drained the battery way too fast though. i hope xreal opens up their api so people can actually start making ar content
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
That's a BIGGIE! More content. It's a LOT of work making more AR experiences and the audience is still really small.

I don't understand it...why have they not equipped every glass with 6dof when they already had on their first one. That doesn't make any sense.... Was it quality wise not a good thing?
@delicruxАй бұрын
@@yotu9670 when they first did it it took alot to compute everything constantly and drained alot of power, they then focused on making them more compact and efficient so that is probably why also they had no idea how to market 6dof at the time, the only video that made sense in explaining the tech was from somegadgetguy who 3d animated a window to show how the tracking worked.

@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
Well that gets a little tricky with stabilization. I dont think it's quite as clumsy as the OG Beam was, but any time we're "smoothing" there is a buffering or delay effect presented to the user to stick the image in place. I dont play the twitchiest games though, and it's lovely on the indies that I'm grinding atm...
@michaelray282Ай бұрын
So Nreal Light had 6dof 4 years ago but they only half baked it and stopped development because software is Nreal/Xreals weak point... completely possible for under 1k tethered, not anywhere near 10k, they could do it now if they just made it a focus.
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
Did I say "$10K tethered"?
@michaelray282Ай бұрын
@SomeGadgetGuy No I know you were generalizing the space, I just wanted to point out Xreal could do that if they tried. They almost had it years ago
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
Fair. I think the issue a lot of XREAL users are facing, there's "doing it" and then there's "doing it well". I would imagine this is a company small enough to be wrestling with how to do this well affordably. We want these brands to scale and improve, but balancing that with too aggressive of a strategy is rough on consumers. After a point, the "acceptable" solutions for making 3dof and 6dof work on tethered glasses in the past (selling a separate brain computer lump) was unsustainable. I think we can all agree XREAL's messaging and outreach was clumsy and insufficient, but we also HAVE to know they would eventually need to move on from brain lumps. It's also why we NEED more competition in this space. We can be critical of smaller players like Rokid and XREAL, but a company like Lenovo (with HUGE resources to play with) flopped HARD trying to do face displays and AR solutions for consumers. This stuff is REALLY hard.
@michaelray282Ай бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy Thats all very fair as well, that's exactly what happened is they did it but not well lol. I think you hit the nail on the head though, what we yearn for is competition so we have competitive options. For me I don't want Apple ruling this space so I cheer on but also critique the small companies. I guess we believe if they listen to the early adoption community it might help.
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
Oh we ABSOLUTELY need to stay on top of these little companies, but I just hope we keep that perspective that HUGE brands aren't doing this (or at least aren't doing it any better if they even try). Criticisms are DESERVED, but it's on us techies to help these smaller brands grow. While a Rokid or Virtue or XREAL is small, we absolutely can influence their business. Apple would never listen to us, and Lenovo just gave up.
@Guiltyspark-f3jАй бұрын
Got the first airs and loved them so much. Then my big head broke one of the arms. I heard the second one fix that problem, but then heard of the blurry edges. I feel like I can finally jump back in. I feel they finally got the hardware, I hope they can now slowdown and fix their messy software.The subreddit is up in arms about the lack of updates and support.
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
It's tough when you're shopping from such small companies. Only Lenovo has tried to do anything like this at scale? They have HUGE resources, and they couldn't deliver a better product than Rokid or XREAL. It's definitely frustrating, but the support hasn't been completely ignored. The original beam is in TREMENDOUSLY better shape than when it launched, and I believe them when they say updates are coming to Beam Pro. That said, it was pretty obvious, the strategy of using Android style phone parts to fulfill the more advanced stuff. We want a company to be ambitious and put out better hardware. Unfortunately for a smaller brand, occasionally that means some projects slip through the cracks. The only winning move is supporting good competition, but no other manufacturer is doing this "better", so the pros and cons, the "risks", seem pretty consistent across the whole product segment.
@TheTheShizzlerАй бұрын
Love this product segment! Not somethig that ive found would fit into my life but the idea os so cool and the tech upgrades always nudge more and nore into wanting a purchase

Could you elaborate more on the viability of this being an all day product? Sounds like you only use it while on planes - what does it need to do to never come off your face (hypothetically)
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
FoV is great for what it is. Imagine Apple's MR headset, a primary use is floating a TV out in space in front of you. Sure, there is an "IMMERSION" mode that can block out your peripheral vision with fancy animations, but you're not VIEWING that. The media is the point. With face displays, the "immersion" isn't as fancy, we just black out the lenses, but the center image where the media is being projected is delivered at a higher PPD. I use these quite a bit around the house. When Lex wants to re-watch a kids movie i can't stand, I pop on these and I can watch something else. It's also fun to fire up steam link so I can game on a bigger screen than my steam deck, but using my workstation to drive the experience. THere are A TON of daily life use cases, but the core limitation is still the birdbath optic. Until you try one on, you wont know what that's like, looking through a periscope lens like that, and I doubt many people would really use them ALL day like regular glasses. I think they're brilliant for moderate to heavy use throughout your day if you find a pair that are comfy.

Thanks Juan for bringing us this news and review. I have the Air 2 Pro and the have very noticeable color banding, I don't know if is an issue with the gradient handling or the image upscaling (the banding is more noticeable in Netflix, and I assume is because of the low resolution content). Did you have a chance of testing that in this new ones?

I still see some in dark blue gradients, but it's REALLY exacerbated by video compression. Comparing my Blur-ray rips to a streaming version of a film, I think the rips look better.

I really like the idea of a face mounted display like this. The ability to be productive anywhere is what is really attractive to me. The only reason I haven't picked one up is the cost. Its new tech, innovation is expensive, and I live in a developing nation where the general price of tech and the impact of exchange rates make it unfeasible at this time.
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
It's the TOUGHEST part of distribution right now. Pricing and currency hurt a LOT of people on the ground. With more momentum in wealthier regions, we can hope this tech starts making its way to other markets at more fair prices.

I've been interested in xreal for a bit, but i was to use it to bring large multimonitor support for work while traveling. With 1080p screens, how challenging is it to read text? If you will binge watch a Netflix series from a phone with this on the whole time, how long will the battery last from a full charge?
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
Depends on the phone. If you stream, and youre not using a desktop mode from Honor, Moto, or Samsung, then the screen will stay on and drain the battery double fast. If you're watching a movie stored locally on an app like VLC, VLC can use the "presentation mode" to send video to the glasses and let your screen go dark, which signifcantly increases youre battery life. In the second scenario, the glasses seem to draw a little more power than the phone's built in screen at medium brightness, but it's still plenty of juice to last a flight from LA to NY.
@enricovidsАй бұрын
This product fascinates me. And I'm really thinking of buying one. I'm often stuck on a plane in economy and there isnt really alot of room to comfortably use my laptop and I'm afraid someone will back into my screen. (ofcourse I still need it open enough to type on the keyboard. Or I'm in a hotel and wish I had dual monitor. Most of my work involves email, writing code, etc. Fairly small text. My laptop has hdmi out and usb-c DP Basically, reading text on a screen. It seems that you're mostly using it for gaming or watching movies. I didn't see an example of you using it for reading small text. How do you think this would be for doing "work", reading text? Do you find it is usable? I don't know if it is relevant, but I previously used a quest 2. I'd get a headache after a while, I think due to the weight imbalance. Also, I found that only the center of the screen would be focused, otherwise it would be more out of focus as you go out from the center. I had to learn to turn my head if I wanted to look around instead of moving my eyes to keep things focused. I don't know if this was a technology issue or compatibility with my eyes. I ended up never using the Quest 2 and selling them. I hate to waste money the same way on AR glasses. Or maybe I should wait til there is better optics and resolution?

Awesome video Juan, love the early comparison between the Air 2 pro with the Beam combined vs. the xReal One (and/or One Pro) standalone. I wonder if it's worth the upgrade though. I just decided to join the AR/VR/MR world by owning a Quest 3 and so now I have a couple of setups, one light weight with the air 2 pro with a Samsung Note 10 Plus with the Nebula app or with the Beam, and one heavy weight yet with bigger and more immersive view and experience using the quest 3. I feel I can make up for the drawbacks of each setup by using the other, but can't get the beauty of both combined into one product just yet. Could Meta's Orion be the next big thing? Could someone beat Meta to it? The Tech Race is going wild! Nonetheless, respect to xReal for positioning themselves as a major player in the game of spatial computing. I truly enjoy their products and am very happy to learn that their next step up was by actually creating their own X1 chip. That alone is impressive, and clearly shows how serious and determined they are to give their customers the best experience in that new joyful realm of computing.

have you revisited your apple vision pro thoughts post launch / current day? have you tried one lately? you can sometimes get a AVP used for $2k. while that is still 4x more expensive then xreals, it feels like than $1500 price difference is less painful when calculating in the rest of what your getting. its basically an xreal with better displays with an IPad thrown in. math that however you want lol

If I wanted to do business with Facebook, I'd pick up a Quest instead. I've been off the mixed reality train for a little bit. I wanted to see HTC's follow up, and I'm still hoping we get an Index refresh next year. Those are two companies I'd rather support directly. There's a LOT to unpack in that question, and I just dont have much faith in Apple's first offering. It was a dev kit they tried to sell retail. Apple used to be the company that DIDN'T force their most loyal customers into being beta testers. They put in more expensive OLEDs, but still somehow managed to arrive at similar or lower image fidelity to Quest or HTC. The price used is still incredibly high, and it has a bunch of fancy tech that doesn't help it do more, while ignoring obvious things we'd want to do in MR like gaming. The battery is just ruthlessly dumb, but that's what we get when the build is already too heavy. Devs have about given up on it, so we shouldn't expect any significant increase in uses this generation. So here's the thought experiment. "It has an iPad built in". That's like a TV+VCR combo though? If the main use of a Vision Pro is floating a screen out in space in front of you to view an MR iPad, then why not buy an iPad and some Display glasses? You'd have higher image quality for the window floating (better PPD in that window), and you can replace the ipad anytime you want. You can't replace the ipad INSIDE Apple's MR headset.

Disclaimer and correction/clarification: He said it isn't going to be something that you get for one phone and isn't compatible with another. This is kind of true. The simple display this is mostly true for, as long as your phone does video out and pd over usb c. For the AR features though, it is very likely that the app isn't compatible since the compatibility is extremely limited, and the windows app has been promised for years but still hasn't been finished.

@@SomeGadgetGuy I've got Air 2 Pro + BEAM. However, X-Real should improve on the software side. Imagine getting a device to "watch" but it does not come with KZbin or NetFlix HD due to DRM restrictions...
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
It was a stumble on their part for sure. But the licensing there is REALLY messy. Even on phones, we can't always count on the highest quality stream because of Netflix security and DRM. I loved my Beam, but moving forward, it was the right play to start walking away from dedicated "spatial brain" adapters. If our phones/tablet/laptops/PCs can stream, then the glasses should just be an extension of that host computer's license. Also, always a fun time to check out plex or jellyfin and just make your own streaming option 👍

I wish there was a way to use the backbone controller to the android phone while using the xreal glasses at the same time and use the headphone jack from backbone controller to play games like call of duty mobile and call of duty warzone mobile while wearing the xreal glasses at the same time. I use the usb c headphone jack adapter with note 20 ultra while using my xreal air glasses but the audio works from usb c headphone jack adapter but there is no video being played even though the usb c headphone jack adapter is being used at the same time with the note 20 ultra. I even tried to daisy chain my headphone jack adapter and the usb c hub and the audio still plays from the headphone jack adapter but there is still no video being played from the usb c port from the note 20 ultra and the headphone jack adapter both at the same time. I ended up using my samsung galaxy note 9, lg v30, lg v20 and my sony xperia 1 iv android phones headphone jack while using the xreal air glasses so I can use my sennheiser hd 600 with the xreal glasses and output the audio from my wired headphones for zero latency and use the xreal glasses to output the video from my android phones own internal display while watching 4k youtube videos from all the android phones with the headphone jack with my sennheiser headphones. I wish I could do the same thing but add the backbone controller in the mix.

Yup. I tried to warn folks. It was better to have a second port on the phone to handle some kind of accessory. If we can't get a headphone jack back, then we need dual USBC.

It is disheartening that they release models with insignificant enhancements every three months. They should exercise caution and launch a fully refined product. The Meta Orion serves as a testament to what is achievable. It is detrimental to their devoted customers who witness upgrades just a few months after investing hundreds of dollars on previous models. They also need to work on the durability of the cable and the temples as they break easily and the glasses don’t work well in 2 years. My first version of the nReal doesn’t work anymore. I bought XReal Air 2 Pro just a few months back.

Soap Box mode initiated… The Vision Pro is not a consumer facing product? Then who bought it? Hey guys I’m a consumer who bought the Apple Vision Pro and I love it! By definition it’s from a company to an end user. If price is why, so consumers don’t buy Tesla’s, Mercedes, Porsche, Ford Raptors, Jeeps, Hellcats? If someone can’t afford a product, it doesn’t immediately mean it’s not a consumer facing product. What it means is Apple created a product that are for consumers that are looking for a piece of hardware that looks amazing, packs 3 monstrous chips, Apples eco system, dystopian environments that take you from the moon to the beach,a video experience that can’t be even explained or showed other then in the headset it’s self. By the way, I make less than $100,000 a year. has anyone ever considered that every product that Apple makes, every user on earth doesn’t always buy? iPhone vs iPhone Pro. Hint hint it’s called the Apple Vision “Pro.” Apple Vision Pro in its existence is the Mac of its time. Apple couldn’t make Xreal glasses day one, that’s like Tesla making the Tesla Model 3 before the Roadster, you got to get the people going. They didn’t do it with the first Mac ( roughly $7,000 in today’s dollars), this was the beginning of its dive into what became the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch and now the Vision Pro, another huge leap in compute. Oh yes the weight, I found a head strap that works for me. Soapbox mode deactivated…

The IPD of the one pro is really bad. The average IPD for western men (europe/USA) is 65. ANd the new glasses come in two forms of which one ends at 66 and te other starts at 66. That means that everybody with IDP 65/66/67 will be on the edge of the IPD spectrum, making the glasses blurry to them. They should have had a 60-70 medium size that would put the 65 in the middle.

As soon as you said Bose I was like they should make a competitor to meta raybans. I don’t want to buy anything Facebook but haven’t seen anything that does what they do
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
It's all segmented right now. I've been focused mostly on optical systems, so I'm not much interested in the RayBan. Now playing with Frame, Even Realities, and all the cinema glasses, each delivers ONE slice of an experience really well. I think we'll be in this space for a bit while we figure out how to tie all the features together and manage performance and power. I'm kinda surprised though that audio companies haven't tried more glasses.
@geetmadan1991Ай бұрын
@ yeah I don’t know why Bose won’t make a copycat product. I just want something that will serve as headphones without blocking my ears and looking like I have headphones on. Maybe one of the bone conduction companies can make a pair of glasses.

So literally just made the beam pro and got everyone to buy and months later come out with a frame Xreal One which now you don’t need it? Sounds like a cash grab that all Xreal wears fell for. Why was the Xreal One not leaked prior to 12/1? After Black Friday deals on the No longer need Beam Pro? Bad work ethic.
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
I skipped beam pro, but the other core use was content creation. I dont really care about "spatial video", so I stuck with the original Beam. For all the folks out there that have the NReal and Xreal glasses, they still need a "tracking brain". We had to expect though that the glasses would eventually move on.
@localblackman427Ай бұрын
Beam pro still has its place. These frames aren't doing wireless streaming, they dont operate as a standalone device with a custom launcher. The beam pro is more than just a 3dof enabler
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
That's the thing I always forget. I'm just not the biggest fan of wireless screen sharing, but it does have its place.
@farishanafiah8461Ай бұрын
@@localblackman427I agree with that. Even right now, we're still seeing smartphones with flagship chipset that still uses USB-C 2.0 without video output (I'm looking at you, Vivo X200, Oppo Find X8, and Honor Magic7). At this point, such practice should be banned altogether!

Heard these were coming in late August (on the subreddit, few specifics but a pretty good hints) - so ignored any Black Friday deals on earlier stuff.

could this be my main monitor?
@SomeGadgetGuyАй бұрын
I've traveled with it using just a phone (moto readyfor) as the "computer". I really like that experience. At home, my workstation still has two big monitors for how I like to work, but I use these glasses around the house more than I thought I would. It all depends on what you need out of a display, and whether you find glasses that fit you well.
