Rectifiers are finned to dissipate heat, that’s why they are usually found in front of the engine. Placing it there will make it prone to failing.
@BrickHouseBuilds10 ай бұрын
That location may be true on some Harleys but most all Japanese bikes have them mounted behind within a box. This is also a modern mosfet unit that runs cooler. No worry of failure in this extremely open area.

An engineering company I worked for before I retired had a machine that would be great for some of the things you make. It was a CNC water jet profile cutter. Do your drawing on the computer screen and let the machine cut out the part for you as well as doing any bolt holes etc. You have such a creative mind, so this type of equipment would probably make your life a lot easier.
@BrickHouseBuilds10 ай бұрын
Well I see the benefit but in the time it takes to draw it on a computer and send it off to be made I can have it done already

Love your work BJ but im concerned about the location. Will this be ok riding through deep flood water 💧 🤔 Shouldn't electrical stuff be under the tank or seat. We get a LOT of rain in Ireland and are used to riding through floods.
@BrickHouseBuilds10 ай бұрын
Not riding through floods or rain. We get dry days here in the US

Reg/rec units usually earth through the aluminium finned casting, the LH end cannot be the earth as the mount is a touch locator so the RH end will be the earth point. A rivnut will usually be an aluminium part fixed to the frame bracket, so the earth path from the reg/rec will be aluminium casting, to steel bolt, to aluminium rivnut to steel bracket on the chassis. There will thus be a lot of opportunity for galvanic corrosion. Can I suggest you weld a captive nut on the back of the chassis bracket to limit the galvanic corrosion to the steel bolt to the aluminium finned casting.
@BrickHouseBuilds10 ай бұрын
These units don't ground through the case. I wouldn't be using an aluminum nutsert just due to strength. It would be a steel one if I did but the most likely option is to weld a nut on so I can retain a flat surface

Master Class ~ Master Class ~ Master Class ~ Master Class. BJ, I have the "very clean" 1998 Suzuki 1200 Bandit on my trailer, tucked in on my driveway. Again and again I ponder the 22 mile speedometer. I look and I look, I think 22K is about right for actual mileage.But who knows? It is for sale. My buyer may arrive for a half price deposit on Saturday. Then he has to pick it up with the remainder in 10 days or I keep the deposit and the bike. So there it is, maybe he'll try to lowball me more whatever. Not gonna happen. I just need to get my Nighthawk on the road. I have a plate for that. Just slap the plate on and take her out. Definitely the name is "West Virginia." Then the Bandit. Hmmm So tempting just to keep that and kite the cost. OK Ok Ok ~ That's my report. Now for your Master Class! Thank you for sharing all that you do! Steve from New Hampshire.

Awesome stuff. Can't wait to see the battery one. On my cafe build i went with a very small lithium battery under the seat because my project came with that tiny battery. Now I find out they don't make that tiny one any longer. So I might need to utilize the area you've mentioned for a outta site location since bigger batteries won't fit the space I built my seat pan around
