Bigger and better?! Top Thrill 2 REVIEW - Cedar Point

It’s been a while since a new roller coaster put butterflies in my stomach, but that’s exactly what happened to me on Top Thrill 2! As soon as you enter this section of the park, everything from the music, the energy in the crowd all revolves around their new roller coaster. Cedar Point, with the help of Zamperla Rides, took the original Top Thrill Dragster and completely transformed into a brand-new roller coaster experience!

it's hilarious that ever since they announced this ride was being done by Zamperla people were crying about how it wouldn't be good, the hydraulic launch was better, blah blah waaaa waaaa waaaa. Now that it's open and people actually are riding it, everybody loves it and the worst complaint is the locker policy

The ride Ops for this amazing coaster (not just an amazing coaster, a world record-breaking 420 ft triple strata launch coaster at the biggest, best park in the country on opening day) were absolutely flawless and amazing💯 everyone needs to be learning from this crew! It was great to see you and Kara again this past week! I've gotten five rides in now, ridden each train at least once, rode front row, and found my favorite seat on this thing (That's row 3!). They have really gone and redeemed themselves from a few missteps in recent years and with this, they have a real winner on their hands. Design, speed, height, operations, polish, reliability... It's just so well done, top to bottom, and it proves that despite using almost the entirety of the old ride, it's possible to create something that is a completely new and different experience.

Was there this weekend. And rode it Sunday first thing. Waited 2.5 hours as it went down twice. First for 50 minutes, and second was about 15. But Monday it didn't seem to go down much or for long and an almost full queue took an hour to get through. Got 2 rides in, in rows 9 in the black train, and 10 in silver. There is a little shake on the launch, but the pullout of the spiral was rough in the back and almost painful on the silver train. Talked to a few other people who rode it more, and they said the silver train is the roughest. It is an improvement over the original. The launch isn't the same but the overall experience is much better

Fully agree. I was there Tuesday night and got two rides. First me and my three daughters in the back two rows, second I used my wife's pass (she couldn't and by law I could not let it go to waste) and got front row. Both were absolutely incredible. I was hoping to like it about as much as the original (my 3rd or 4th favorite in the park). It wasn't even close. This was far superior. I couldn't believe how much more I like TT2 than TTD. For all that's been said about the pre-tophat portion, I should mention going over the tophat is significantly improved. You definitely go over faster, and the train sits you up higher, and I thought it made a big difference. I used to go over with my hands up like a typical yahoo. Did that on my first ride in the back, and on the spiral down I got ragdolled. The airtime was better as well, my butt didn't hit the seat until we hit the bottom. This ride is a significant improvement. I really liked the original. I like this one far better.

Good to see that TT2 delays the backward launch a couple seconds to give it some extra kick. Looks like the 3rd launch is programmed to give it an extra 1% boost to eject the train over the top hat. For a minimalist makeover, it seems to do a lot of things well.

I rode closer to the back of the train and I thought it was an extremely rough ride. I enjoyed the ride but didn't think it was worth 2.5 hours I had to wait in line.

Ride in the BACK!! Going so far up on the spike is unreal, and you get WHIPPED over the top hat and spiral- I’m talking ejector airtime on the way down through the spiral. This ride is amazing.

I'll just say to you what I said to the last person to do this: While I was disappointed with when TT2 was announced not having a layout after the drop; I NEVER thought TT2 was inferior to TTD. Only someone addicted to the worst drugs in the world would about 4.5 seconds on a coaster that features a 400' drop too. So it looks like an improvement, at lest to me.

Just because I am curious, is the drop off the spike or the top-hat more insane. The drop off the spike is slightly smaller, but it looks to be insane. On a different note, great video man, I should be getting out to CP soon and I can't wait to ride this beast, even if I am a little intimidated by its height.

Yeah, at very least its nice floater, all depends how fast the train clears the tophat, but overall, it travels faster over the tophat than the original TTD

First launch up the top hat stalls at 225ft....Its higher then Pantheon's rollback yet NOBODY complains about that??😂😂 This ride is beyond INCREDIBLE!!!!💯💯💯 I have 8 rides so far and its better than anyone thought it would be! The initial launch at 74mph is faster then Maverick's launch! Smh its only being considered a "Negative" thing because people are comparing it to the original hydraulic launch....But if you have ANY COMMON SENSE, you realize this is not Dragster, its a new day and this ride is LIGHT-YEARS better the the original. This ride is top 10 in the world 💯 FACTS

Thanks for your video. 10:53 - Honest question; all of the reviews seem glowing, but how do we eliminate desparation bias and recency bias. Meaning are we glowing simply because it still exists? Or because it’s recent and the energy of a new ride at CP? Just would love to see a 6-12 month review.

Makes me wonder what will happen with Kingda Ka, will Six Flags upgrade that coaster to what Top Thrill 2 has. I mean Top Thrill and Kingda Ka both had cable launch systems. Top Thrill 2 is now upgraded so will Six Flags follow the lead of what CP has done.

The track prior to the top hat does sway a lot, though the tophat movement was exaggerated with my post stabilization. Usually, I catch that type of error during processing. Oh well!

You wouldn't want it to be rigid. The sway is there on all coasters to alleviate damage to the support structure.

I realized after riding it that I had pretty much expected the intensity of I-305, and was a bit disappointed with the launches. That being said, its still extremely fun even though I think that first launch is especially weak.

You only hit the highest part of the ride for a couple seconds. You barely have a moment to realize how high off the ground you are. Try it out I promise you'll love it.

if its misaligned, most likely there's a safety system that provides the train from launching if the track isnt aligned properly. So in that case nothing would happen

When it aligns it locks into position, fast switch tracks have been a thing for a while now on coaster and I can’t think of a single time when such a malfunction occurs. If that were to happen anyway, the launch also works as a brake even when not powered, so the train would slow down immensely before hitting the switch if it even reaches it.

At 6:55 you'll notice there's a grey metal piece at the ends of the straight transfer track. These are piston powered locks that push into the static track pieces to lock it in place while the train is launching. You can kind of see it at 7:17, but it's a lot more apparent in person. The launch sequence doesn't start until after these are locked in place, ensuring the transfer track won't move

Steel structures like this are designed to sway. Helps dissipate the forces so the structure will last longer and actually is safer. Every steel roller coaster (even wooden coasters to an extent) will bend and sway after the roller coaster rolls by.

All trains, even ones on the railroads and definitely high speed trains move side to side. In the railroad it’s called hunting, the wheels of all trains mush be conical. the motion you feel when riding top thrill is the conical wheel sifting back and forth at a high speed. The only way to negate the hunting is to make the train a maglev. people who say it has a rattle are babies.
