Metal Slug 3 is unanimously agreed by fans of the franchise to be the best game of the brilliant series. It was developed by SNK when they were nearing bankruptcy, and thus, the developers of the game threw every idea they had into the game: Riding big elephants? Turning into zombies? Missions in land, sea, air, and even space? That's all jam packed into this hour long journey of Metal Slug 3. There was so much that was crammed into the game that it's impossible to experience it all in one playthrough, as the game introduces the concept of branching paths in each mission, each providing the player with their own unique obstacles, enemies, and supplies, before leading to the same boss of the mission.
Metal Slug 3's game engine was so meticulously programmed and designed, its butter smooth, precise, and instantaneous controls has been used almost as-is in later Metal Slug games developed by the reformed SNK Playmore, though none of those games showed the passion, the energy, and the know how of the original developers of the series. Metal Slug 3, now 20 years old, may sadly be the pinnacle of the series, but I still find absurd enjoyment from it, both taken casually and seriously, and I think that many game developers, level designers, and graphic artists can learn a lot from it.
Metal Slug 3 is the single hardest MS game to one life clear in my opinion. While luck is always a big factor in Metal Slug runs, Metal Slug 3 is exacerbates this by being insanely long, and having two big RNG fests relatively late into the run, namely Mission 4's Boss, Sol Dae Rokker, and the part in Mission 5 where you have to shoot down a door before fighting Fake Rootmars. There simply isn't any strategy that I know of that guarantees, or nearly guarantees a deathless run through these two parts, and its incredibly frustrating.
This was the luckiest hour of my entire life.
