I've loved this band since the early eighties. Andy Partridge is up there with the best songwriters in the world and Colin Moulding is a excellent songwriter aswell. love them both they compliment each other perfectly. both awesome songwriters.. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Andy Partridge wrote “Rook” after a three-month struggle with writer’s block. “It fell like rain from heaven when you’re in the desert... I don’t feel that I wrote it. I feel that it wrote itself, and gave itself to me in some way.” The melody uses all 12 notes. “Soar up high, see the semaphore of the washing lines” is a very beautiful bird’s eye view.

This song makes me feel so nostalgic. It seems to transport you back in time to the days when you were young and carefree. It really does wash over you and make's you think about where your life used to be when you were young, and where it is now. XTC are timeless!

Utterly gorgeous goosebumps galore. Andy Partridge's finest ever song and one of the finest songs of the 1990s.

I love this song so much. I get tears in my eyes every time after the "promise me that you'll take it up on its final ride" line.

Yeah it is a great line and the kind of earnest desire most of us can relate to strongly.

I have loved this song - and the "Nonsuch" album - for 26 years, but maybe it wasn't until today that I asked myself "Is that Dave Gregory playing the piano?" and it sure is. Love it. Credits to Guy Barker's flugelhorn as well.

I can't imagine a more beautifully thought out song. The arrangement is brilliant and I am left in awe of how this song never gets old

There seems no end to this bands excellence. They should have been 10 times bigger than U2. People just don't get it, do they...shame.

Rook, rook Read from your book Who murders who and where is the treasure hid? Crow, crow Spill all you know Is that my name on the bell? Rook, rook Gaze in the brook If there’s a secret can I be part of it? Crow, crow Before I’ll let go, say is that my name on the bell? Soar up high, see the semaphore from the washing lines Break the code of the whispering chimneys and traffic signs Where’s the message that’s written under the base of clouds? Plans eternal, I know you know, so don’t blurt out loud Rook, rook By hook or by crook I’ll make you tell me what this whole things about! Crow, crow Why can’t you show If that’s my name on the bell? On the wings of night, I fly too, above field and stream My head bursting with knowledge ‘till I wake from the dream If I die and I find that I had a soul inside Promise me that you’ll take it up on its final ride Rook, rook Gaze in the brook If there’s a secret can I be part of it? Crow, crow Before I’ll let go, say is that my name on the bell? Is that my name on the bell?

This somehow gives me a Game of Thrones vibe....guess it is the mystic feel of the strange reveal...is that my name on the bell...and the whole raven or at least avian section.
