Xterra Talk-DIY Viair 88P Removable Mount (How To, Nissan, 2nd Gen, Frontier, Pathfinder, Mods)

On this episode of Xterra Talk, I wanted to dive into my custom mount for my Viair 88P air compressor. The goal was to create something that was a combo of "onboard air" and "portable air compressor."
Honestly, I use it as onboard air 95% of the time, but for a minimal cost and relatively simple modification to the Viair, it can be modded to be removable from the truck quickly and easily and used with alligator clips on any type of vehicle.

Glad it was helpful! Yeah, the hose makes it a little tricky. Unless you pull the extension off and store it somewhere else, but then there's still a fair amount to worry about. Good luck!

The exposed pin on the universal connector from the allegator should be your negative, so shorting to chassis is not an issue. An inline fuse at allegator is also a good idea.

Again, nice job! I did basically the same thing with my Smittybilt compressor. Mounted it under the front passenger seat and wired it straight to the battery. Onboard air!

I am also planning to mount this compressor to the back of my truck but need some ideas to extend the power cable it's fused allegator. Any good ideas?

I basically just ran big gauge wire straight from the battery to the back of the truck via that universal plug and it worked great for me. Honestly, the universal plug was probably the biggest risk/weakest point in the set up, so if you hard wired it, you should be in even better shape. I'm no electrician though so take that with a grain of salt and I would check some forums for your vehicle to see how people are doing it in their trucks and what's working.

Do you need to have vehicle running while you use it like recommended? I run same compressor, love it.

So, you don't HAVE to, but I've noticed that the output is definitely higher when the engine is running. Also, I'm always paranoid about killing my starter battery, so I just generally keep the truck running for both of those reasons. Hope that helps! It's a great compressor.

if your worried about the connector use anderson plug - if thats to big use what we use for RC toys the XT60 or XT90 they are rated for higher amps then your connection nice setup though

How has the viair held up since you made this vid? Any concerns with heat buildup when actually using the viair?

Still working like a champ. No heat build up or issues. I’ve run it for a full 12-14 minutes straight to air up all 4 tires multiple times and no issues.
