There are four reasons why Bodhisattva preceptees shouldn't own pets.

We Buddhists, especially Bodhisattva preceptees, why can't we own pets? There are a few reasons. Let me go through them with you. First of all, pets distract us. Once we own pets, we need to take the responsibility and the obligation to take care of them. It will give us a sense of persistence, it will make us worry, and it will make us unable to let go. I have met a Buddhist layman who had passed away. Before he died, he had a dog. He wasn't married and had no children in his life. We can say that in his whole life he had nobody but the dog with him. He had a close relationship with this dog. His life was quite calm. Nothing big happened. Generally speaking, besides practicing and chanting Buddha's name, walking the dog was what he did every day. Talking about his practice, I felt it was pretty good. His chanting meditation ability was also quite high. A few days before he passed away, I remember clearly. I went to visit him, to give him the final teaching. He seemed to be quite stable in all aspects. But at the last critical moment, when he was about to die, he suddenly came out with: "Dog, dog". Then his face panicked and suddenly changed. That was his last breath, and then he left the world. Well, this is a typical example. At the very last moment of his life, he was impeded by his beloved pet dog. As a result, he didn't die in peace. I felt it was a pity. This is the first reason why our Buddhist disciples cannot own pets. Secondly, we make bad karma for owning pets. This damages our compassion. Why? As we all know, pets, like cats and dogs, what do they usually eat? They eat small animals. We feed them meat and fish. We buy all kinds of meat for them. But as Buddhist disciples, especially as Bodhisattva preceptees, if we buy meat or fish to feed them, then we naturally make bad karma. This hurts our compassion. It is very unfavorable for cultivating compassion. This is the second reason why our Buddhist disciples cannot own pets. The third reason is that once we own pets, we then are staying with animals all the time. This will affect the development of our wisdom. Generally, pets are animals. We know the reason why animals are animals is that they are ignorant. Of course, there are some very smart animals, but really just a few. Most animals are foolish and ignorant. Why are they animals this life? Being an animal in the six reincarnations is because of their ignorance. For us Buddhists, our purpose is very clear. Our goal is clear. We just want to get rid of our ignorance. In order to increase our wisdom, in order to leave from the six reincarnations. But as Buddhists, if we own pets, we will be close to these pet animals every day. We will live with them every day, eat together, play together. I tell you that, seriously, when we stay with these animals every day. As the saying goes: those who are close to Vermillion are red, those who are close to Ink are black. After a certain period, over time, we will be infected with the habits and problems of these animals. I tell you fellow disciples it's true that if you have a dog now, you will not necessarily be born into a dog in the future. If you have a cat now, you will not necessarily become a cat in your next life. However, one thing that needs special attention is that if we are overly attached, overly concerned, overly fond of, and overly dependent on pets, this will have impact on us in the future and our future lives, more or less. It will affect us. Therefore, if you like dogs very much, it is very likely that you will be reborn as a dog. Those who like cats very much are likely to be born into a cat in their future lives. It is influenced by some habits of this life. They are all innate habits that are stored in our Eighth Consciousness Storage. So the Buddha's Dharma tells us that who you are with is very, very important. Where are we from, where are we going to. This is what the Buddha's Dharma tells us: going with habits. If we want to know where to go in the future, then we look at our current habits and our current preferences. If we now stay with animals every day, be with them, then we may have a greater chance of being reborn as animals in the future. I also know a monk. When he talks, he especially likes to bare his teeth and wave his hands around. He likes to put both of his hands on others' shoulders and he moves a lot, like a puppy, his hands are always moving. This made me feel very, very strange. One day, I went to his place and learned that after he had become a monk he had got a puppy. He lives with this puppy, eat together, play together. After living with this puppy for a long time, naturally he got some habits from the puppy. As a result, sometimes when he talks to others, he naturally puts his hands on people's shoulders, and keeps moving. I tell you fellow disciples. As Buddhist disciples, the reason why we want to learn Buddhism in this life is that we should gradually remove our bad habits and remove some of our problems. not adding more bad habits and problems. We learn Buddhism every day, just to learn to see through and put down something, instead of constantly remind ourselves with more worrying things and more troublesome things every day, endlessly. This is not a wise approach. This is the third reason. The fourth reason is that for us Buddhists, time is especially important. Time does not allow us to own pets. We have no time to waste. We just have little time left. Everyone should have this sense of urgency. As a true Buddhist, a Buddhist disciple who has taken Bodhisattva precepts, in addition to working and living, in addition to taking care of family members, and eating, drinking, and sleeping in our lives, the time for learning or practice is very little. Every day we feel that we have no time to complete our practice. I myself am a typical example. Why don't I eat dinner in the evening? In the beginning, it wasn't because I liked to skip dinner, no, not for this reason. It was just because I am very lazy and I am too lazy to cook. I think cooking or preparing meals is just a waste of my time. After cooking, you have to do the dishes and clean up. A whole lot of things. countlessly, it's a waste of time and my life. Of course now skipping dinner has become a habit. I'm used to it. If I eat at night, it is very uncomfortable. If I don't eat at night, the effect of chanting Buddha's name or meditation is very good. My Sleep is very good as well. I don't know if you feel the same way. I often feel that it's already a lot of work just taking care of myself, so how can I have time to take care of those pets? I tell you, fellow disciples, that taking care of these pets; cats, dogs and the like, takes a lot of time. If they are sick, we need to take them to see a vet. The dog needs to go for a walk every day, we have to take it for a walk. How can we have so much time? I think we should leave some more time for ourselves to practice. Therefore, because of the above reasons, the rules of the Bodhisattva Precepts clearly stipulate that cats or dogs cannot be owned. No cats or dogs, no pets. If we own pets, if we are bodhisattva preceptees, we have violated a minor precept. Of course, every bodhisattva precept includes exceptions, covering, upholding and violation. This precept is not an exception. It has conditions for exceptions. If we encounter stray cats or dogs, if these small animals are really pitiful, need our help, then we should be compassionate to take care of them, and save them. There is no violation when it comes to Bodhisattva precepts. But after we rescued them, it is better to find someone or somewhere to send them to. You don't want to always keep them and build up a relationship with them. It eventually will impact yourself, affect your practice, and affect your rebirth to the Pureland. Then this would be too unwise and not worthy. Thank you for your compassion, Amitabha!
