What bothers me is The Box. That kid would be treated as if he had an eating disorder. They would force feed him through a tube. While it is voluntary, the parents should've admitted him. Even though it's supernatural in nature, there's no reason for them to have died of hunger. Besides that, the way the doctor is portrayed is horribly embarrassing and unethical. He must have gotten his MD from a cereal box.

Hey kids! Every box of Pills-bury comes with a free Medicinal License. No sending box-tops, no taking pictures of the box , not even sending a receipt, just cut it out from the inside of the box. Better yet kids, the certificate is usable at your local, participating hospital. Enjoy healing the world! 100 milligrams of healing fun!

The first story reminds me of a pointless side-character in a Hungarian movie. That character was like a robotic Bill Murray who would always end up having strange conversations with women in public places, carried a big wooden box at all a times and it was hinted like it's his dick in the box.

3 out of 4 films in the XX anthology were about motherhood, which is a surprisingly limited perspective in addressing womanhood and seems a tad sexist itself, that the could only think of ONE storyline involving any other aspect of female existence than breeding. But the worse sin is that they didn't really didn't bring any new perspective on motherhood to the table. The Babadook was a good film because it explored a rarely discussed, semi-taboo issue: maternal ambivalence and the notion that motherhood is ever anything less than the greatest gift on earth, and the fact that many parents may love their children and also be repressing resentment towards them simultaneously. It was also good because the character of the mother was fully realized and the film explored in depth how single parenthood had affected her social, sexual, romantic, professional and financial life in ways that are mostly negative and made you understand and empathize with how her love for her son might sometimes hang by a thin thread.

"There are not enough opportunities for female directors in horror, so we marketed this anthology as being directed exclusively by women to prove that women deserve opportunities in horror!" One of the woman; "I don't like horror movies, I didn't want to make one, so I didn't." Not only is this whole thing stupid on a conceptual level, but that actually kind of teeters on false advertising, doesn't it? I mean, she's blatantly admitting that at least part of this project was deliberately falsely marketed.

They don't want equal opportunity, considering women do have equal opportunities, and yet feminists still cry constantly. No, they want equal outcome, they want everything handed to them, but they don't want to actually put in the work or dedication for it. They see a man who's worked his entire life to be where he's at, and they just demand everything he has, just because they have a vagina. I don't understand how feminists still act genuinely confused as to why literally everybody hates them.

As soon as he started talking about the movie I didn't think the entire movie would be as bad as he said, like I thought his opinions would be true, but going down below the surface of the movie. For example when he said bad/atrocious acting I thought, "it can't be that bad, he probably means once you get past the primary goal of the character you find nothing else driving the characters motivations" or something like that... nope. It's an actual horribly acted, awfully produced movies. you know the sound in movies were someone swings a sword or staff and you hear that 'woosh' sound? Those jump scares in The Party remind me of the old (late 90's) Xena/Hercules series where that sound was used EVERYWHERE, Hercules goes to punch someone "WOOSH", Hercules hands someone a hammer "WOOSH", Hercules goes to shake someones hand "WOOSH". This movie is just FUCKING BAD from start to finish and if those feminists are smart they'll bury the rest of those copies in the desert along with those E.T. games.

The sad part is that the first movie has a legitimately interesting premise with a lot of potential. You could capitalize on parental fears of not providing for your children and/or failing them somehow along with overtones of parental paranoia and stranger danger. The box serves as a good example of the "mystery box" that J.J. Abrams doesn't actually understand as it isn't necessary to know what's inside or even who the creepy guy on the train is. It's just a catalyst for the plot wherein the parents are frightened by their children slowly starving to death. An air of mystery can be preserved, as the box is tertiary to real meat of the story. But they fucked up so hard. Jesus. Woefully incompetent handling. Parental fears are legitimately scary to anyone who has kids (no, shit,) and it's a sadly underutilized (in this case, poorly utilized) element in horror films. This film does it no justice.

For some reason, The Box is my favorite out of the whole movie. The entire premise intrigues me. For "The Box", this is the best explanation that I've found from Reddit. Eating is Immoral: One is that it was about immorality of eating other creatures. Everything we eat, in one way or another, is the result of ending a life. The guy on the train showed the boy the truth about eating as a present. Realizing the truth about eating, the boy couldn't eat anymore. When he pass it down to others, this grave truth, they would agree. The problem was that they didn't know there is any hope for fixing it so we can live. The world is designed that way. That is why, the boy or the guy on the train weren't eager to tell the world about it. They would tell anybody who really wanted to know. That is why the boy only told his dad when he begged him. This interpretation can explain the dream in which they were eating the mother. The key to this is her approval of it. She was happy that they were eating her, therefore absolving the immorality of it. No other creature that we eat has any say in it being eaten hence make it immoral. This interpretation has flaws because it is not entirely true that eating necessarily requires ending a life. Our eating diets defenitely does, but we have options. Fruits are designed & grown by plants to be eaten by other creatures. Eating them would not be immoral. It would be rather beneficial to the tree. There are suffering & starving people in the world: I like this interpretation better. The Box is about immorality of living comfortably while others are suffering in the world; some of them as an indirect result of our comfortable lives. The neoliberal policies have cost a lot of countries to become modern slaves to our needs. The colonial era have created a lot of failed states without any tradition to rely on & no resource to build modern infrastructures. The wars forced on poor countries by countries like the U.S. killed, displaced, and made whole generations poor. The guy on the train showed the boy the 'present.' The box contained the bare truth of present times. Having known the truth, the boy refused to participate in this immoral system. I think the whole film can be explained by the scene where both children were absent at the table. The man told his wife, - "Are you taking any of these seriously?" - "Of course. I'm their mother." - "How can you eat while our children are starving?" - "I gotta eat, don't I?" That question posed by the husband is what is film was about. The boy, girl, and the father responded, "you are right. I must not eat while others are starving." Another scene that reinforce this theory is the doctor visit. The doctor clearly stated that there are starving people in the world, and you would die if you don't eat. And the boy responded, "So?" So what if I die. The mother unlike the others lacked this moral thing inside her. She lacked the curiousity as well. She repeatedly refused to know the truth. At the trian, she didn't want to bothet the guy. At dinner table, she kept eating without any interest in why her kid doesn't eat. She was willing to let them die without asking anything. At the Christmas tree, they literally gave her the 'present,' the truth. While it made her a bit curious, but she called it a joke and didn't get the truth. After their deaths, she stated she wanted to know. But deep down she was still 'Hungry.' Her desires & worldly needs hindered her from knowing; even asking. While the dream would be harder to explain with this theory, but I think if we consider the fact that it was HER dream, it would make sense. She was fundamentally different from the others. While the others cared but only lacked the information, she lacked the careness to even ask. Her dream was the ultimate exaggeration of her lack of care for others. That was her world view. She pictured her children & husband so enjoyingly eating her; just how she was enjoyingly eating while others even her family suffered. In her dream, even herself who were being eaten were happy. A bizzar world view that unfortunately a lot of us have of the world today. We think everybody is happy in this cruel system. Even the victims. The reason I would like it to be named "The Present," is that I think the film is about the 'present' this day and age of human history. The film is the critique of today. The deep immorality of it. And the fact that, if we really care, we should stop eating. This was a great film that intrigued me greatly. The actings were superb. Directing as well. Very good film.

tbh the Birthday Party could’ve worked if 1. it didn’t try to be funny 2. it established that the woman was very mentally ill. Like she has had violent episodes and/or hallucinations in the past and suspects she murdered her husband. She doesn’t want anybody to know bc she’s afraid she did it and blacked out, plus she is terribly paranoid. Most importantly, just establish that this woman is full-on CRAZY if u want the audience to just go along with her stupid irrational decisions

The Birthday Party would've been way better and actually, ya know, made sense? if the story was tweaked a bit. This would at least make the story better, not the editing or god awful jumpscares. Instead of it being in the middle of spring it should be in the middle of a blizzard in the heart of winter. We should get a mother frantically calling an ambulance but the ambulance won't be able to come for quite some time. So, she has to keep the corpse away from her kid, and make sure they don't ask about their dad. This would even work better if she had a handful of kids, or maybe her sister and nephews/nieces are over too seeing as it would be the holidays. This would be so much better, cause at least they would make ONE thing alright

She has a daughter and visitors to deal with! Instead of her making bad decisions non stop have her try to call 911 but you see flashbacks of the ordeals she had to go through when she was interrogated the first time so she hangs up on them. Heck, make them call back to see if she's okay while she's dragging her dead husband around can actually be funny... If you ask someone who was horribly fat as a child about this they'll have a different answer. A lot of them will tell you their parent would heap their dinner plate in shit food and not eating everything or objecting would make their parents irate at them. I'm not just talking junk food, in my case my mother, someone who grew up on a farm, who never exactly had much food growing up, would always cover my plate in the widest range of the most delicious vegetables ever, because she could never eat like that as a child, and she always assumed it was "Healthy" because they were vegetables. As a result me and my sister are quite seriously overweight. Well, where. Once I moved out and started cooking all my own meals I've found that now I eat maybe a quarter of what I used to, and am healthier than I've ever been. Any time I ever asked my mum to cut down on the quantities she'd look at me like I was some crazy anorexic trying to starve myself, despite being 40KG's overweight.

The Box actually has the potential of being a eerie horror film by changing the title and ending 1. The movie starts off with the dad and the children eating out without the mum becoz the dad is a househusband and mom is a working mom who is also a workaholic ( rarely home ) 2.The rest of the family have to spend new year without her in a newly opened restaurant 3. The restaurant is actually this place that sell really addictive human meat stuffs ( of course not reveled til the end ) 4. The rest of the family refusing to eat anything apart from the stuffs from the restaurant 5. Mom get suspicious 6. They did not stop eating everything just from the restaurant 7. Mom investigating 8. Found out weird chef dumping shit out 9. Go out to check the shit and found bones with skulls 10. Get kidnapped by chef 11. Ends with the scene where the rest of the family eat there Dad is eating a random dish found a finger with the wedding ring But remain calm and continue to eat

Every single writing decision featured in The Box is so astonishingly, mindbogglingly abhorrent that it feels as if it were generated by AI. Why is everyone so angry? Why is everyone so stupid? In a different context I could understand, for example, the father's thought process and dialogue being hideously unnatural because he was written by women, but everyone in this short is an equally bumbling, illogical block of wood. Anyone regardless of gender should be able to notice their gaping flaws and complete lack of logic. Plus, the self-declared mother is probably the biggest block of wood of them all, so... what happened, girls? It's genuinely like an alien wrote the script. "HUMAN EAT FOOD. NO EAT FOOD, HUMAN DIE. WHY HUMAN NO EAT FOOD?" Re-watching this review, I was forced to skip over The Box due to its stilted, out-of-touch, inept writing making my skin crawl. "You gotta eat, Danny. There's people starving all over the world." This garbage deserves a comfortable spot next to The Room in terms of sheer inanity. At first I thought, oh the director's name sounds Eastern European so English probably isn't her second language (even when the dialogue in a movie is supposed to be written by, oh I don't know, writers and proofreaders) but no she's Canadian. There is no possible excuse for how these aliens-trying-to-be-human-characters act, speak, and reach conclusions. An utterly bewildering short.

What really cracks me up is the reasoning of the doctor as to why the kid should eat. No, it's not that you'll die, kid. It's because [GENERIC GUILT TRIP NO. 234] Where'd this guy get his medical degree? And no kid that age would just be like..."why should I have to eat?" He's old enough to know that not eating = starvation and subsequent health problems. He'd be worried, too. Not just the parents. This isn't like a four year old toddler who barely understands that being naked in public and shitting your pants is bad. The disconnect is unreal.

Thank you for this review. I made it through "The Box" which began as potentially interesting but quickly progressed to insightless, annoying, and by no means frightening as I kept waiting for something, anything to happen (its only redeeming feature was film shots of tasty-looking dinners). Giving the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt, I proceeded to "The Birthday Party", which was quickly revealed to be so idiotic, boring, and predictable that I quit the movie about 5 minutes in. Some filmmakers don't understand that using obnoxious visuals and audio that attempt to startle never compensate for lack of substance or a coherent storyline.

The first two story could easily be fixed Short 1: the family forms a taste for human that slowly develops from small things like finger nails to full organs Short 2: have the mother be what killed the father hence why she needs to hide the body and she puts him at the head of the table as she loses her mind. See easy!

I actually really like your first idea! There could've been scenes where they were eating their dead skin or scabs and then the mom could've come home to see mail everywhere trailing to a clip of her family eating the mailman or something. The second one needs a lot more help though because it's more the execution rather than the story, although, the story is pretty bad too.
@ThorDude
