ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Hans Ruedi Giger (1940-2014). Dark, primal, nightmarish, deeply disturbing but also imbued with an uncanny, ominous beauty, Giger's amazing artwork won an Oscar for his art direction on Ridley Scott’s movie Alien (1979). Presented here is a HD Montage of some of H.R. Giger's art and images from the Alien movie and his other projects. It shows the evolution of his work and how it became the Alien design we all now know so well.

I remember being in high school and seeing Alien, I wasn't able to sleep the night before from anticipation (Scott's TV trailer was so evocative and well done). During the movie I'll never forget my friend literally jumping out of his seat at each scare and the chest burster scene was mind blowing to say the least. It still remains one of my all time favourite films.

This soundtrack is unique for terror films. Instead of just raising the tension level or telling us there's imminent danger somewhere, it creates an eerie yet very strong sense of "doom" and/or ineludable terrible fate - It's not just scary but also disturbing. It has an existential overtone to it that really takes it apart and renders it unsurpassed by any other horror film soundtrack I've ever listened to.

I have contemplated, over the years, since 1979, what sort of mind creates this very very psychotic art work? Back then, of course, I was young, naive and uninterested. Today, I am amazed at this man's abilities to literally scare the shit out of me...still. HR Giger is the master of Alien art. His rendition of the, now infamous Alien creature, is on a level never to be matched. I remember seeing Jaws for the first time. People literally jumped from their seats. When I saw Alien, people didn't just jump from their seats, they left the theatre, they were so sick. What sort of mind must create such horror? Such darkness? To answer that question would require the one thing we cannot do, ask, HR Giger. He passed away some years ago sadly. His artistry goes beyond those places we dare not go. The Alien creature he created from his mind was as real as any living thing. I went home that night, really creeped out. Only one other creature gave me the creeps like that, " The Creature From The Black Lagoon ". That creature gave me nightmares it seemed so real, but HR Giger's Alien took it further. There was this psychological component to his work. It was like being on an Acid trip and drawing something out of your mind that no one else could see. His Alien creatures were not only very realistic, but truly frightening. Slimy, wet with that hiss sound, inner jaw and those teeth. Nothing has ever been so beautiful, yet so frightening. Nothing. Not even Jaws comes close and I know sharks. Beautiful majestic creatures of the deep that are vilified every time someone gets bitten. The Alien creature, in my opinion, is number one in sci fi creatures. 👽

Giger's art is so different that I often wonder when seeing the stuff, if he was somehow tapped into another world out there millions of light years from Earth, I expect given the vastness of the Universe, the chances of a world like those he illustrated would be rather high, after all that universe had Giger in it and his chemicals came up with the art in mind at least. So in one capacity, this alien material does in fact exist.

Almost in a cat-like or even feminine in a sense, bizarre, hideous, and yet alluring to the eye at the same time. It's most unusual.

Giger's work served as the base for many artists, and even of the Contra franchise. Quite ironic, placing the hunter of the Predator and the Xenomorphs in 1 piece of media, long before any of the movies or lore could do so. The attempt to mix biology and mechanics in 1 seemingly perfect and malicious thing and letting the art speak for itself more than any other backstory could. Pretty much giving no explanation aside from the one we interpret ourselves, just like Lovecraft's ideology of the fear of the unknown. Sad to see it all spoiled down with the existing idea of the Praetomorph. Honestly when I feel like creating vent art, he is the first to come to mind and to influence my art style.

@xxnightopsxx I agree, I guess Aliens was more of a sci-fi action film than SF-horror... to be honest I probably like it more if only because it expands the Alien 'universe' just enough while remaining terrifying. Good to hear there is some talk of a prequel w/Ridley Scott! I wonder what kind of ground that would cover? because if anything the whole AvP thing is based on the origins or relationships between the three species, which is what you would expect a prequel to deal with...

@Fredrock1982 Dan O'Bannon cited Necronom IV as a direct inspiration for Alien because the creature in the picture was ambiguous; it could be male or female, and because "it could just as easily fuck you before it killed you." Giger is certainly a genius, but he is almost certainly also a sexual freak, which just adds to the brilliance of his work because it hits on such a primal level.

His amalgamation of neonatal trauma; play on phobias of suppressed femininity, uniformity, and expiration; and consistent stance on this technological strand of suicide; works to make him one of the most profound, expressive minds of the last half-century.

@witz85 Maybe they never will, but that's what makes the movie so good, remember that half the horror surrounding the alien is that you hardly ever see it (in the first movie anyway), plus all the mystery of where the hell it came from, how it sees, etc. Alien is an excellent example of a psychological thriller aswell as sf-horror.
