More than 20 years ago I was teaching a class at East L.A. College in Los Angeles, CA. When I got out at 10 PM and was walking to the parking lot for my car something caught my eye reflecting the light from the lighted tennis courts that were there. I looked up and saw the underside of the B-2 going over. It probably was not more than a few hundred feet above me. It was obviously making a practice bombing run from its home base at Whiteman AFB in Missouri. What surprised me the most was that it didn't make a sound. Even when it turned away with rear facing me: Absolutely no sound at all. That was mind blowing considering the sound that military jets make.

Imagine the early pioneers of heavier than air flying machines, they paid for, they designed, they built and they flew their aircraft. Some of them lost their lives, but not one of them would forgo flying their own machines. If you had the ability to go back and question these pioneers, perhaps ask them if they would like to just park the finished aircraft and admire it, or if they would prefer that someone else besides them would take the risk of that first flight . . . . the looks you would get would border on the incredulous. Of course the aircraft will fly and the builder/designer will be the first pilot. It is the same with model aircraft scratch builders and designers. Compared to the original aircraft pioneers, our risk to life and limb are minuscule. The joy we get from flying is priceless.

I'd heard that the wing and fuselage shape of the B2 was inherently unstable and that it took incredible high-tech computer processing to keep the thing in the air. However, this RC model seems extremely smooth and stable in flight, and I doubt that it contains super computers to help it fly. Well done to the model builder. I'd love to know if the builder had to make any major modifications to make it airworthy, or if the design is in any way unstable. It's a pleasure to see this thing fly.

I'm not a 100% sure about that, I think that it's more the "stealth fighter", the "diamond shape" that makes that plane more unstable. The flying "wing" design actually.dates back to early WWII designs. German engineers from what I understand had plans to use "flying wings" as bombers. Their natural low radar signature is what they were going after. From what I understand.....I could be very wrong....just commenting for conversation...not being a KZbin troll!!!! So if you know for sure, that's awesome!!! I always welcome "educated conversation", and learning something if I'm wrong.....

@@ericwilliams7374 yeah the Germans had working prototypes. I believe there is only 1 of them left. It was called the HO 229.
@mattdombrowski84354 жыл бұрын
@@ericwilliams7374 you are off the mark on two points. A flying wing is in fact very unstable. It isn't too unstable to the point that the computers are *necessary*, but it makes piloting the plane difficult to the point of impracticality. Remember that in WWII radar was top top secret, so the nazis wouldn't even know they should design around it, much less how. The reason why they wanted the flying wing was for minimizing drag and weight. Consider, for example, a b-29. That big cylinder in the middle isn't providing much lift, but it is very heavy and has a lot of drag. If you put the same amount of volume into a flying wing, you have a better lift to weigh ratio (meaning smaller planes carrying the same weight of stuff or similar sized planes carrying more stuff) and you have less drag, which means it takes less fuel to get you where you want to go.
