In 1961 I was in junior high school and read an article about rocketry. They were using zinc dust and sulfur as propellant so I found a hobby store where I could buy the chemicals & made rockets out of some small diameter aluminum tube my dad had. I sealed the noze with epoxy and epoxied fins and guide loops cut from cat food can lids to the body which was about 4" long. We launched several but could never see where they went (too fast & too small). Years later the neighbors cleaned out some ivy and found most of them. My dad worked at a missiles and space division and had one on his desk LOL. Shortly after I found a company where I could mail order parts and motors (Centuri as I remember) and talked the 9th grade science teacher into letting me shoot one off on the sports field. Great times a long time ago!
@JayWye529 күн бұрын
At the time,you folks were regarded as "basement bombers", because making your own propellants and motors generally resulted in loss of body parts. Completely against model rocketry rules at the time. Now the sanctioning bodies have "amateur" launches where you can launch such homemade rocket motors safely.

This vid gives me a bit of nostalgia. I used to fly HPR over 20 years ago. I even started my own hybrid rocket motor company--Propulsion Polymers. But like many small aerospace companies, I couldn't make any money at it, so, I shut it down. My most memorable flight was a minimum-diameter flight, on one of my own I-80 motors. It burned forever, and allowed me to set the Canadian 'I' altitude record at the time--8120ft. That record was taken away from me a few months later by one of my HPR friends at the time. I made a last minute decision to fly it with a tracking beacon. Which was a good decision, because it drifted a fair amount, and took me two hours to find it, even with the tracking beacon! Love your rocket projects, and I've been watching Joe develop his craft as well. Fun!

I think that I will need to buy more than one of your kits. I have been building and launching rockets for more than a couple of decades, and have seen how the sport/hobby has evolved over the years. At least you live on the Continental United States, so you have lots of wide open spaces. I live waaaaay over here in Hawaii, and, we are quite limited altitude wise, because we simply don't have much wide open spaces. Going to the mainland and meeting up with some people that have experience in high power rocketry is definitely on my bucket list. Much aloha to you from waaaaay over here in Hawaii.

@williamstrachan9 күн бұрын
@@causewaykayak that is 100% bullshit. UKRA exists, as do rocketry clubs, and the CAA has recognised model rockets as users of airspace and have included them in their regulations.
@causewaykayak8 күн бұрын
Try reading again. There are authorised ranges FOR BONA FIDES developers. Wildcat experimenting is not allowed - The cops just did a collection of energetics on behalf of RYA/MCA. I had materials for safe disposal. Attending officers were quite clear that this was in part to reduce opportunities for local freelancers. That was in June, you can verify the collection with PSNI at Belfast. Our local political resistance / paras always looked fondly on owning something to shoot at British helicopters and were always hopeful of Libyan imports. That's on public record - - general knowledge really. So before you cry BS maybe you should ease off on the hair trigger and read more carefully.

don't forget,the rocket motor costs from $55 to $103 for each shot,that's for a disposable motor. for a reloadable motor,there's more investment in the motor casing,then you get to buy reload kits for each launch. Xyla's very nice 3.1" diameter rocket uses H,I or J 38mm motors. I did LOTS of Estes rockets as a kid,then saw a High Power Rockety magazine in a bookstore,and decided to try Large Model Rocketry,rockets weighing up to 3.3 lbs,IIRC,and limited to G motors. I got lucky and Aerotech gave me a free 24 mm reloadable casing,I bought a 29mm RMS case. the first LMR I built would have worked to qualify me for Level 1,but I flew it on a G-64 motor. Twice. I still have my rockets. I actually had more fun building the rockets than flying them. back then,it was $5 a shot,now it's at least $35. Expensive hobby. AND,you have to fly with a club that has launchers,a sufficient field, and the FAA permissions,unless you happen to own your own sod farm. I even made and flew a "cruise missile" rocket, 3-sided for "stealth". All my rockets were scratch-made,no purchased body parts.
