I was expecting more like when a standard balloons bursts at human-elevation pressures: one or two holes, and the rest flows away. Did not think it would shatter like a liquid-nitrogen-frozen rubber ball. Very cool seeing that it manages to get that high up despite having apparently no elasticity remaining anywhere in it whatsoever from the temperature and pressure there.
@AllcattleNohat3 жыл бұрын
I live between 2 airports, and this was giving me a bit of anxiety. Glad to read you actually have to fill out a NOTAM and go somewhere safe to do this. Very cool.
@seraphina9853 жыл бұрын
For something like this you would have to contact the aviation regulatory authorities in any country even far from airports. The height it climbs to means it is going to enter the Class A airspace which is IFR only so ATC needs to know about all traffic in order to provide separation. But yes though the site only has information for the US and Canada I strongly recommend anyone considering attempting such an experiment contact their local aviation regulator to check their notification procedures. Failure to do this may result in fines or worse actually cause an aviation accident.
@LouisBertrandTech3 жыл бұрын
Confirmed: a group of my college students a few years ago did something like this (minus the crown) and needed Canadian ATC clearance. Their ship was a styrofoam picnic cooler, carrying a GoPro and an Arduino with a cell modem.
@seraphina9853 жыл бұрын
@@LouisBertrandTech I honestly would have expected a formal ATC clearance to be required in pretty much any jurisdiction since they pretty much all follow ICAO guidelines. So for me it was more surprising to learn that the US apparently only requires filing a NOTAM. Don't get me wrong as an uncontrolled aircraft that cannot fly a clearance a balloon is obviously a craft requiring a general aviation hazard warning for the area. Still I'd have expected there to be a requirement for approval also though perhaps that is rolled in with the NOTAM filing there. I am just thinking of the case where someone intends to release from a site directly bellow or close to a designated airway for example. ATC would deny the clearance in that case though perhaps in the US they would reject the NOTAM filing on the basis of the unsuitable launch site also. Admittedly if I could motivate myself to wade through regulations I guess I could clarify how the NOTAM filing process works in the US. It's just that wading through regulations that I'm unlikely to ever need to know isn't overly appealing and well the US is slightly out of range for my Cessna 304 from Europe lol.

I didn’t catch the whole video, but I was kind of watching out of the side of my eyes while I was working, and I was wondering how you prevent airplanes from crashing into these things. Thanks for letting me know. The thing literally falls out of the sky like a projectile. And it goes up slow I know, but it is not that crazy visible. And what about going up into the clouds, It is not visible at all! Small planes don’t have radar’s on them.
@seraphina9853 жыл бұрын
@@steveperreira5850 Well it is unlikely that the launch would be allowed in the vicinity of IFR flights (ie aircraft flying by instrument navigation) either that or aircraft would have to be routed around the area. VFR aircraft ie those flying visually are not allowed to enter clouds.

Thank you so much for sharing all of this. And for helping us all see that sometimes we want issues to be black & white when they aren't. Good people can still be deeply ingrained in bad systems, and we all need to work together to help change those systems.

I love how unique you are that you were able to win a crown AND launch it into the stratoshpere yourself. Keep making waves and a difference in the lives of those who have been opressed. You are a trailblazer. Thank you for making way.

To be honest, I didn't know you were a Miss America BUT, I saw you on a Veritasium Video and like you. This was probably one of the best videos I've ever seen. You are truly an unselfish and amazing girl.

Super video. Lots of fun and fantastic project . Just a little remark: I wish you would leave the written comments on screen a little longer. They go by too fast so I (probably others too} have to stop rewind, pause read and restart (so much effort for us poor watchers, can't you just work harder and make the video easier to watch? 😁}. Seriously, maybe it's just me but I like to keep the flow going when watching a video. Anyways,despite this small remark, I really enjoyed your hard work and fun delivery.

Ahhh! That was so cool, such a cool idea, and it was great watching how excited you were. It's surreal watching from the crown view! I can't wait to see more weather balloon space science.

Very interesting. I started following this channel because the things I think a lot of youtube people are doing that are cool, and those people are mostly men. I want my daughter to believe there is a reason she should be taking dual credit math and science classes and have an inspiration for making and doing cool stuff. Lots of inspiring people on youtube but not a lot of them are small framed women. I hope people seeing you changes how they perceive STEM major students.

I just became a subscriber a little over a month ago and now I'm catching up on your older videos and I've got to say, between the canoe, the corset, and the crown every video is just revealing new layers and dimensions and they are all so much fun. You are a fantastic builder and presenter.

I like thinking that an old farmer found your crown in last year's harvest and is just baffled at how the hell this crown got into his field.

AGREED. I actually drove that whole area looking for it on any non-corn area and couldn't find it so... I assume once the fields were plowed it showed up....

@geniusgamer38403 жыл бұрын
It's actually quite a joke, the probability is pretty low. Even if you could fly a craft like this anywhere without a notice to airmen in a safe location, the chances of falling on the exact place a person is aren't high.

@@geniusgamer3840 yup haha that's why I said possibility instead of probability. The relative risk of it hitting someone is really low but the possibility is still there. In any case, indeed I wrote that comment in jest lol
