from the FULL video: www.rojodojo.com/gikan-ryu-so... Here we start number four from the 義鑑流 Gikan Ryū waza that Noguchi Sensei taught in Japan. The classes were very dynamic and Noguchi Sensei moved rapidly through the forms and added many henka. This is normal for his teaching style.
When the attacker comes in, the initial defense pressures the opponent. Noguchi used the word 押える osaeru. You press in with your uke to check the opponent’s movement and prevent him from attacking. But this is also a focus point to hide your counter attack.
Now using principles of hichō, we deliver a series of kicks to break the attacker. These kicks are lateral attacks. This is a feature of Gikan Ryū.
The kicks are a form of 探り蹴り saguri geri. You test, search, or probe for weakness with your kicks. The first target can be 膕 kaku, 摧 sai, or even the ankle. Then we finish to 金的 kinteki.
This is like an exploration of 八方蹴り happō geri. You may even move behind the opponent to deliver reverse kicks. The choice of an infinite variety of kicks depends on the opponent’s stance. It also depends on the results of your probing kicks.
Noguchi Sensei showed us henka using 前方受身 zenpō ukemi. During this sutemi, you may kick the attacker’s front leg, or turn and get the back leg. He did the same on the outside of the attack. And he also surprised us by dropping under and between the attacker’s legs to deliver a double kick to the body.
We finished with 杖 Jō or 棒 Bō henka against a sword attack. I sweep the stick into the knee using my own foot to launch the strike. Then bounce back into the other knee before pressing up the middle to control. This strike up the middle is a form of 刀匿之構 Tōtoku No Kamae to shield against further sword cuts.
