FULL video is here: www.rojodojo.com Right now it’s the rainy season in Japan. This reminded me of one rainy night when I went to a class with Noguchi Sensei. It was a small class with 20 students or so and Noguchi announced that he would teach us Gikan Ryū.
He said that 40 years ago Soke taught Gikan Ryū to him and he pulled out an old blue notebook that had his detailed notes from 40 yrs ago. Noguchi repeated this training for his next 4 classes. I went to all of them.
I demonstrated the first kata, then I broke down the 5 strikes that it contained. Gikan Ryū is a form of 骨法術 Koppōjutsu. Developing the skill of striking is not just hitting a target, but also knowing how each kyusho will affect a person’s body and structure.
This kata is aggressive and there is no block. Noguchi Sensei used the word 一瞬 isshun, meaning all 5 strikes happen in one instant. The end result is that your opponent is overwhelmed and won’t get up easily.
Noguchi Sensei shared some henka that used 捨身 sutemi to bring down the attacker. These use 前方受身 zenpō ukemi to break the arm from the inside or outside. Then the same breakfall attacks 声 koe from the inside or 膕 kaku from the outside.
After studying Gikan Ryū with Noguchi Sensei, I realized that I had studied some of it before. It turns out that Hatsumi Sensei will use these forms during his classes without always telling us that he is doing Gikan Ryū.
So next I shared some henka that I studied with Soke. The form of the kata is still there, but he attacked different kyusho. And instead of zenpō ukemi Hatsumi Sensei used 横流れ yoko nagare for the sutemi.
