Thank you for sharing... regarding to TFSA account, the constribution is accumulated from year 2009. TFSA constribution is not tax deductible, only the interest and investment gains in that account are tax free. Please be aware when withdraw from TFSA, better don't deposit it back on the same year. Because it counts by the total deposit so is easy to be trapped of over contribution.

in case if you don't sell the stock you don't have to pay any capital gain. There's also different between short term capital gains (sell within a year) tax rate is usually higher than long term (sell after 1 year). Ideally just keep the stock and sell within low tax bracket range. In US if you have no income from regular job in low tax bracket (40k usd after deduction ) a year, it is same as Hong Kong you pay 0% tax for long term capital gain.

Very good video with very clear explanation. Thanks a lot on your effort.
You get dividend tax credit for dividends from Canadian corporations. The effective tax rate is almost ZERO for your first $50k or so dividend income if you have no other income, depending on which province you reside.
@@chanfranc Not true. The foreign tax credit only allows you to avoid double taxation on that dividiend income. That is, you still get only 85cents for every dollar of dividend income you received. For eligible canadian dividend, you could very much get to retain every cent of your first 50k or so dividend income.
@chanfranc2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyng5685 You misunderstood my statement. (or my wording "交了給美國的股息稅就攞唔番" is misleading). If you have received foreign dividends (e.g. from a US stock), then Box 16 on your T5 slip will contain the "withheld dividend tax amount" (i.e. the tax amount you have already paid to US government for the US dividend). This amount will be deducted from your tax payable to CRA (Canada). So your statement "The foreign tax credit only allows you to avoid double taxation on that dividiend income" is CORRECT. It is true that you always only get 85% of the US dividend into your pocket. But my point is: 1. if in the end you have to pay tax to CRA, your 15% of the dividend paid to US government will be deducted from your tax payable. Therefore, essentially you are "getting back" the 15% money. 2. if in the end you don't have to pay tax to CRA (for that year), then you will never get back that 15% of dividend.
@jeffreyng56852 жыл бұрын
@@chanfranc you get the foreign dividend tax credit because you also have to report the foreign dividend as income, so the credit will avoid double taxation. I dont think you can "get back" the 15% by offsetting your tax payable to CRA.
@chanfranc2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyng5685 Have you had a case of "federal foreign tax credit" before? I have my 2020 tax return here with me, and it clearly shows this tax credit amount on the line 40500 and the amount is clearly deducted from the "net federal tax". (Note: Deducted from Federal Tax only, not from Provincial Tax)

Even since the implementation of Common reporting standard(CRS), investment in financial institutions are required to provide your TIN. The purpose of AML regulation is not to stop tax evasion. The reason behind CRS is.

Hello 阿豬: to clarify on Canada's RRSP account, the annual RRSP contribution room is based on your previous year's employment income's 18% (excluded investment income and capital gains) with max approx C$27K. If you don't have employment income, you have no room to make RRSP contribution.
@trevorwong69834 жыл бұрын
It is 18% of all earned income including alimony(lol), minus contribution to registered pension plan.

Up to approx. $47k per person in dividend income from eligible Canadian companies. Assuming one has no other income in that year.
