- Social media platforms have an addictive potential akin to alcohol, nicotine, or drugs. Swiping through feeds triggers neurological rewards, and over time, our brains learn to seek social media instead of more natural rewards.
- Just like drug addiction, younger users are particularly vulnerable. The rapid release of dopamine in response to social media engagement mirrors the effects of substances like heroin or meth².
4. Loneliness and Anxiety:
- Paradoxically, social media can increase loneliness, anxiety, and depression. While humans are social beings, the likes, comments, and shares on these platforms can mimic or replace the social benefits we receive from in-person interactions³.
