とても共感します！ ピッチアクセントはきっとイントネーションの事ですよね！ 私は関西生まれで親戚がみんな関西でした。 一歳半で東京に引っ越し、標準語で育ちましたので、イントネーションの差がよく分かる耳に育ちました。 だからこそ「言葉って面白いなぁ。」と思ったので多言語学習をする様になりました😄 発音はルーツやアイディンティティを示すいい情報源になるので、隠さなくてもいいと思うのです。 完璧にコピーにならない方が彩り豊かで、とても楽しいです✨ もちろん完璧な美しさも素敵ですので、つまりどちらも良いと思います😄 多言語を勉強してみて思うのは、最初のとっかかりをクリア出来て辞書を引く方法が分かれば、もうその時点でその言語が出来るって事だと思います！ それくらい、新しい事を1から覚える事って凄い事です👍 スティーブさんの動画に出会えて、やってみよう！できる！と思えました！ ありがとうございます！

I live in Japan, and trying to get stuff done at the local city hall, or dealing with a real estate agent, seeing customers and business people chat in cafes here - well, it is hard not to draw the conclusion that having the correct ‘turn of phrase’ is very helpful…Mind you, I suspect playing dumb (something that is only the province of the gaijin) has its usefulness such as when being asked by the policeman why you didn’t stop at the line. But when Keigo is used, it looks very formulaic to me. I say this all with the caveat that I am a terrible false beginner..dwelling in the n2-n3 ‘no-man’s land’ of the JLPT proficiency scale.

Se as pessoas focassem mais em ouvir e adquirir vocabulário, ao invés de ficar querendo ser perfeitos no idioma com certeza evoluiriam muito. Vejo alguns poliglotas se divertindo muito no aprendizado, principalmente quando é um idioma novo e eles não estão nem ai se é perfeito ou não. Excelente vídeo Steve!

Yea i did not care much about grammar in the past but now years of being insulted for bad grammar and even getting banned from a website made it so i don't like to talk much in languages that i am still learning

Grammar is important, he is talking about prnounciation and pitch accent mostly, things that really don't matter that much if your goal is to just be proficient in a language. Accents aren't something to be ashamed of.

I can see that you know English well enough to communicate just fine. That's a great accomplishment! There are snobs in the world who like to put people down though who don't have excellent English, so run away from those kind of people.

Perhaps, it's a temporary adaptation of your brain at learning two languages at the same time; in the long run though, I'm fairly sure the German you learn will greatly help you with your English. 👍

I'll respond in English. I read some material online, at LingQ for example, to learn words. If I am reading a book off line, I don't look words up. I just move on with an imperfect understanding of what I am reading. No problem.

言語学習で完璧を追求する事はありません。しかし、効果的な学習はネイティブを真似る事だと思います。 間違いを避ける方が効果的な学習ができます。できるなら間違いを避けるべきですし、発音も表現も自然な方が効果的に学べると思います。

Okay but where are these Japanese videos coming from all of a sudden? And where are the other 18 languages you supposedly speak? Surely natives would prefer their own languages too and there'd be little point in learning such languages just because they understand English

With all due respect, the advice that you give to Japanese people could be misleading in a way: I have seen lots of Japanese speaking English with thick Japanese accents WITHOUT ANY HESITATIONS with copied native gestures, which was like they are trying to look the natives. It blashed me a lot. They need to learn to speak as closely as the natives, by which I think the understandable level of English will be in their hands. From my experience, saying "just speak with fun" leads to some Japanese who LOOK uneducated.

Stray Wolf. I really hope that you can speak a foreign language perfectcly with grammar and pronunciation, but I am 100% sure that you can't. I know someone from England. They have lived here in Norway for many many years, and still they have a strong foreign accent, but I don't make remarks on it. By the way: I have met someone from England and other foreign countries who can speak norwegian very great when they came here as adults. So it depends on the individuals skill level and ability. But most importantly: If you are swedish, it is easier for the average swedish to learn to speak norwegian fluently, do you see my point? Lol.
