I speak Cantonese and it sometimes sounds so gutteral and loud when spoken. When sung, it's damn beautiful. :)

Actually Kelly sings 3 versions of "Reflection"~ One has the same lyrics as this one, but the music is in more Chinese style. This one was resung in 2006 using different music. The third version is in the movie, which the music and the lyrics are both different from this one. But all 3 version are perfect!! Kelly sings so well~!!

If you understand mandarin and cantonese. Im not a cantonese myself but the choice of words in the song for the cantonese is stronger. English is reflection. In cantonese is 水中花 meaning the flower inside the water. Showing Mulan is just an ordinary girl, not a tomboy. Just stuck in a conservative, man dominating society. There many words translate into cantonese become have way deeper meaning. The beauty combination of chinese characters and cantonese phonetics.

Cantonese has MANY metaphoric ways of saying things that can be confusing even to other dialects... some of them might even sound like gibberish. Cantonese even have many profanities that would seem really strange or confusing. It can be literal when you want it to be, or it can be as poetic as you want it to be.

@SonnyGoten89 I don't think it depends on region, I read up that it depends on generations. 'Leih' is used more among younger people and 'neih' is more for the older/traditional generations. This happens because languages always evolve overtime.
@hoisan113 жыл бұрын
@seoulhangungmal You are correct. Lei is the lazy way; literally in Cantonese it is known as 懶音 which means "lazy sound." The younger generations speak this way because, as you said, language is evolving. There is also this difference with ngo vs. o (the dropping of the ng- initial). Some aspects of Hong Kong media try to uphold the correct way of speaking though. For example, in many songs they will use proper pronunciation, as opposed to the lazy kind. Ex: ngoi vs. oi for love 愛
@Mshorselover18 жыл бұрын
I almost prefer this to the original! But no one can defeat Lea haha
@SonnyGoten89 If you would like a convincing proof, you may look out for the Chinese readings of Japanese Kanji. All words that have a nasal (ng- initial) always begin with a "g" in Japanese, and words without the nasal initial are also blank in Japanese. Example: 外 - (Jp.) Gai - (Cnto.) Ngoi 愛 - Ai - Oi 銀 - Gin - Ngann 顔 - Gan - Ngan 晏 - An - An

No, I don't. I used to put this video as a video response on that video on KZbin when it was there, but now that video was removed. Maybe if you try different search terms (Mulan, Reflections, Cantonese, etc.) you'll be able to find it.

@SonnyGoten89 yes it's over correction. But it's been overcorrected for centuries, so most cantonese people today think it is lazy without the NG but it's actually just right without it. However, the NG in NGO and a bunch of other words should indeed be there.
@Fear_the_Nog13 жыл бұрын
@SonnyGoten89 actually that's incorrect. the cantonese word for "love" is "Oi." people have been saying ngoi due to a mistakened perceived initial consonant loss like in other words such as NGO "me." So to compensate, an ng has been inserted. The word for "I" or "me" however, is indeed properly pronounced as NGO with the NG. This can also be confirmed by comparative linguistics with other languages that borrowed heavily from Chinese in the past.

Van WangYe Kelly Chen is really a diva, miss those mid 90s - 2000s cantonese pop queen like Kelly Chen, Faye Wong & Sammi Cheng. You're right! Kelly is sweet , sexy & have a tender & powerful voice. I think she's can act as Mulan if she still in 30 something because she was acted as princess with Leon Lai in 江山美人 (2008) haha

The 'ng' makes words sound more fluid and is better sounding phonetically. It's a shame really that it seems to be phasing out.
@takerukari4 жыл бұрын
Dang this comment is old, in more professional settings, people still use the 'Ng' sound when communicating with words that could have replaced with 'L', but in a more relaxed setting a lot of people intermix 'ng' with 'L' because, yes, younger generation, but it is also easier/faster to speak with the 'L' instead of the 'ng', the way people pronounce 'ng' and 'L' are also quite close together that most people already know what you are saying. So a lot of the younger generation (like me) tend to hear the 'L' sound and end up speaking with the 'L' sound. I don't tend to correct myself since people know what I am saying whether I say 'nei' (you) or 'Lei'

Cantonese and Madarin started diverging around the same point in History. Cantonese decided to be more conservative when it comes to the sound (even adding some other sounds) while Mandarin decided to do away with certain sounds or combine them. (Two different words that have different sounds in Cantonese may have merged when it comes to Mandarin... so that they both sound the same.)
