The Courier is able to join forces with the forces of Caesar's Legion, in their bid to lay claim to the Mojave. Their founder and leader Caesar extends an invitation to the Courier, enticing them to serve the Legion, and become one of his most accomplished agents. But does Caesar's trust in the Courier extend so far as to hand the reins of the empire over to them upon his eventual demise?

If the Courier _is_ meant to replace Caesar once he dies, I think the Courier is the synthesis of the thesis, Caesar, and the antithesis, Lanius. Caesar is diplomatic and political, whereas Lanius is militaristic and violent. The Courier is _both._ Therefore, the Courier is meant to meld both methods. This would fulfill the Hegelian dialectic that Caesar himself bases his entire worldview on. It would be quite poetic as well.

Okay, so, they're the Courier's cousin's roommate. Since first we go the the Courier's father. Then the Courier's uncle. And then, we can either go to the Courier's brother or Courier's cousin depending on which nephew we're talking about. Then, finally, we go to another cousin, meaning it's most likely a first cousin's roommate, although it could be a second cousin's roommate too.

@@JonatasAdoM This is probably a design consideration which they didn't have to tackle. Designers spitball a lot of ideas, which then get pared down by ability to implement. But - perhaps screenshot the PC's portrait and lay it onto the bill.

This makes so much sense. As a female character I always wondered why the Legion soldiers talk down to women but not Ceasar himself. He never even mentioned it. He just gets down to business and expects you to keep up. His desire to have a competent successer is more important than the agenda. I love these Fallout theories!

Apparently, among the great deal of cut-content for New Vegas, the Legion specifically, is the option to ask Caesar why women aren't allowed to be legionnaires themselves. He would then explain that it's because the Legion is still effectively a nomadic force, not a true standing army. As such, he needs to keep one half of the army, the men, always ready to fight, while the other half, the women, are needed to maintain their numbers. Among the reforms he plans to institute, allowing women to take their place as equal to men is one of them.

It's, for the most part, the grunts that tend to harp on it. Dead Sea for example never mentions it, and even rewards a female Courier for a battle well fought. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say some Legionaries simply take the ideas of the Legion more to heart than others.

Another reason is that childbirth mortality is very high, logistics wise is not affordable to let women in the army. Sawyer go into more detail about this in one of his tumblr post

I think it might also be a matter of old tribal practices reasserting themselves and not something that Caesar actually hammered into them. Caesar did a good job of obliterating their old identities but some of their attitudes towards woman still linger, and Caesar didn't feel a great need to clamp down on it. That's my headcanon anyway.

Caesar admits that even he is not capable of outrunning death in a big speech after claiming the Mojave (potentially mentioning the brain tumour that the courier rids him of) and basic says something along the lines of not to worry because Mars has sent another of his sons to see in a new era of the legion and that until Caesar's time comes he will basically be making sure the courier is fully prepared to lead. also with all the shit we go through in the DLCs the courier has a fair few very powerful allies and weapons and general quality of life things they can draw upon. for example tech from Big M.T. to turn the best of the best into cyborgs making them even better, more efficient slave collars so that they would lose less of them, better weaponry, the ability to make cyberdogs and forcefields, teleportation, potentially Joshua Graham and 2 new tribes, all the shit at the sierra madre, etc. basically if the courier takes the throne, or hell just continues helping Caesar the Americas would be unified under the courier and legion within a century at most and considering all the cybernetics and Big M.T. modifications we can get in game we could easily live that long and potentially longer with the tech we have access to, Rex's brain survives over 200 years before it even starts to go bad so its entirely possible to build ourself a highly advanced robot body for when we're old, plus with the stuff we've got access to we could make it basically indestructible. so basically what im saying is long live Courier 6 the God Emperor of Mankind

It’s weird but a post Caesar’s Hoover Dam story about the Courier slowly become Caesar’s heir sounds like it’d make a great Telltale Style game. Friction between Lanius and Vulpes would probably be some of the mid game conflict and whoever you side with will end up supporting you when the other breaks off to work against you for the end game or something like that.

Mild rant but why does everybody always seem to forget about Lucius? The Legion military branch is divided into the army, frumentarii, and the praetorians. Sure, Lucius doesn't have as wide of a reach as the entire legion military, or even the frumentarii spec ops. But Lucius and the Praetorians have been around Caesar personally for the longest. If there was anybody to say who was following Caesar's will the best, it would be him. And that would easily make him your greatest ally or greatest threat in the long run.

I don't think anyone in game really gives lanius enough credit. By the time you meet him you expect a brute hardly capable of speech. But in two quests (Veni Vidi Vici and the non-legion version) he defies literally all of it except for Ulysses' suggestion. Vulpes badmouths him, yet Lanius uses his tactics when he uses the dam's tunneling system. And what kind of "savage barbarian" listens to logistical concerns? How about letting the courier claim _all_ of the glory at Hoover Dam instead of sending scores of legionaires to die in that meat grinder? The man is a lot smarter than he seems and the NCR should seriously fear him more.

Controversial take: Lanius is overhyped, and not nearly as intelligent as people think. If pulling back is the correct decision, and it takes a full on 100 speech courier to convince him of this, it’s clearly not his own intelligence doing any legwork there. It’s clear he’s not stupid, but I really think his intelligence applies to the field of war near exclusively, and anyone claiming him to be as capable of keeping the legion as a whole together as Caesar Id call delusional.

As NCR stood and did nothing, Legion made allies, weakened amd sabotaged NCR supply lines, infiltrated their high command, keeps on winning the war of attrition with their highly superior guerilla tactics + Lanius is a much smarter commander than Oliver. He strips Oliver from even having that long range advantage the NCR has. Without courier none of the Legion's plots aimed at the NCR would have been stopped. Dam would easily fall.

I feel like the fundamental difference between how the republic treats the courier, and how the legion treats the courier, demonstrate the fundamental differences between both faction’s ideologies. The legion is a military autocracy, revolving around the preservation and expansion of the absolute power of it’s dictator. It’s a government defined by the power of the individual over the collective, and as such, individuals of great value to said dictator matter far more than they would in the NCR. The NCR, at it’s core, is a liberal democracy- a government which, in theory, exists not for the empowerment of the individual, but the protection of the rights of the citizens. In practice it’s an oligarchy controlled by a corrupt legislative class that answers only to wealthy donors, but the fundamental principles of the republic lie in the idea that one individual should not have absolute power. Glorifying a single person at the expense of the republic’s ideals could easily jeopardize the preservation of those ideals. The political situation in the NCR is precarious, with decades of decay at it’s back. Caesar is right in how the current state of the NCR greatly resembles that of the Roman Republic; a wealthy cabal of corrupt legislators, in the pockets of wealthy agricultural landowners, slowly chipping away at Republican institutions and traditions. At this point, all it took for the original Caesar to establish himself as dictator for life was a successful military campaign, a number of populist reforms. All he had to do after that was to March into italy, and defeat the few people with enough power left to stop him. If the republic started excessively glorifying the courier- a victorious war hero with humble origins- it wouldn’t take much for them to start a successful political career. From there, they could easily become a threat to the republic, and they won’t allow that to happen.

I always liked the idea that Ceasar sees a potential heir apperent in The Courier, but sadly this idea was never taken seriously by most of fandom. I'm delighted to see this video, as with it there is a chance that this can finally change. The funny thing about Ceasar's idea of "New Rome" ain't exactly as crazy as it sounds - it happened numerous times is history. Conquering more advanced area (New Vegas) and it's citizens by primitive invaders usually means, that invaders will eventually embrace the legacy of the native population in many areas. Even conquering New Vegas would de enough to change Legion's life style in the long run - assuming that they will be able to survive as ruling class long enough.

I honestly feel that Fallout hasn't surpassed Caesar's Legion as a faction in any game since, and probably never will. From a pure ideological stance, they are an enemy that forces you to think and they are a force you can seriously see being swayed towards. Sure, the NCR are the "good guys," but the Legion is such a complex if flawed viewpoint that it encourages people years later to continue to contemplate how effective they are, not just militarily, but philosophically

13:33 Actually no, the whole point of Lanius is that he ISN'T a meathead. You have like 3 ways to convince him with words to stop. Ullyses and even base game nod to the idea that Lanius as a person, is still strong, but what makes Lanius, well Lanius, is the legend. Lanius is more of a psychological weapon then even physical one for Caesar, Caesar needed a symbol, an embodiment of Legion, to strike fear into enemies, and Lanius is just that. Yes, it's probably just some guy who, while was above average in intelligence and strengths, but just like Caesar himself he isn't even close to be as dangerous as he portrayed, just like Caesar lies about being son of God, does he also probably lies alot about Lanius feats to make them sounds more... Dangerous. But again, he isn't a meathead since he's literally a GENERAL OF THE ARMY. You can't just be dumb and get into General position, it takes some sort of intelligence to get in, rarely do generals are dumb(or even most military personnel except troops, any position that requires thinking usually has above average IQ people in it) 14:27 Again, it's just fear tactics. To think Caesar would be 100% honest with Courier is just silly. After all, he doesn't outright tell him about tumor as well. I'd argue he's not really super intelligent or stupid. He got into the position of general because he was basically the legions Frank Horrigan. He took on entire raiding parties by himself and when betrayed he killed every single man in his tribe on his own. He had too much of a presence and a legend not to lead troops. Like you mentioned, Ulysses said it's that legend that ultimately shapes how he acts, and the only time he really acts with caution or uncertainty is when that legend could be tarnished. He doesn't hold back from a pyrrhic victory (massive amounts of attrition pushing the NCR out of the Mojave) because of his cunning he does it because he doesn't want to look weak and ineffective. And in terms of diplomacy he has none. Caesar is smart, hecan use people like vulpes and Lanius at the same time, effectively using the people under his command to accomplish different goals simultaneously adding multiple layers to the enemies defeat. Lanius essentially has the idea of "tiny man no like fight, he use words, coward" which while great for his exact role (the top of an army in the middle of a war) it's horrible for literally any other situation. He's too much of a warrior, not enough of a leader (Caesar hits the nail on the head saying he's a tool). There's no ability to compromise, delegate, show patience, and I guarantee Lanius would have ZERO interest in calming the legion down (which Caesar planned to do, intermingling the legion and the NCR to create a middle ground), rather he'd march the legion to the sea and then immediately turn around and watch it devour itself.

I like that you notice that the Legion is not really anything like the historical Rome. Caesar's Legion is based on just that, the legions Julius Caesar used to conquer Gaul. Caesar didn't transform raiders into settled people, he just gathered, organized, and brainwashed them. He loots, enslaves, and requisitions resources to sustain his military campaign which was always ultimately aimed at the NCR.

Yaboii says it better than I can in his previous videos than I can in a comment but if I remember correctly he poses the idea it's only because the legion is currently in a battlefield space (the Mojave) and it is still being a nomadic army without a permanent settlement, as the reasoning to why they are prohibiting females in legion territory from gaining a stronger position in society or as combatants on the Mojave battlefield under legion's banner He suggests that the legion wants to prioritize replenishing their population numbers by increasing births among the female population and likewise guesses these and similar prohibitions will be relaxed once the legion gains victory

@@rejvaik00 Honestly a female courier supporting the legion might become a Theodora like figure in there mythos ; Empress Theodora was a very powerful woman in the Eastern Roman Empire and She used her husband’s reforms of the legal system to improve the rights of women. The courier could do as well , slowly and steadily improving the rights and obligations that woman have in this society , since the Courier it's a cyborg and could out live the more stubborn and conservative members of the Legion . She would force noble girls to marry what were essentially mafia bosses, and would imprison or assassinate people over petty jealously or perceived slights. Caesar is basing himself off of the big man himself but I have no doubt that Edward Sallow was also a student of the later Roman Empire as well. He has without a doubt heard of the '5 good Emperors'. This was a era of time where Each proceeding Emperor chose a successor not of his own family, but rather would adopt someone who had already proven themselves to be a capable leader and adopt them. This was an age of insane stability within the Empire which would be exactly what the Legion would need to become the Empire. The Courier is not meant to be Augustus, he's meant to be Trajan. And kick off a new line of similarly elevated rulers.

@@BudMasta Just because you think he is wrong in his views, doesn't mean they are not worth exploring and trying to make sense of. That's like saying there is no point talking about Hitler or Stalin. A good example for where Ulysses actually makes a good point, is that the major factions of the wasteland shouldnt be imitating/trying to restore pre-war institutions that have already failed, and in his opinion are destined to fail again, but rather trying to create something entirely new and suited for the wasteland.

I always felt this was the implication. Lanius doesn't really seem suited to lead, and Caesar is 100% smart enough to know this. I would imagine the reason we see Lanius leading instead of Vulpes or Lucius is because the Legion - in it's current state - would respect and prefer the strongest warrior in Caesar's absence, but not the strongest mind. The Courier has the potential to be both, and as such, it's easy for Caesar to simply name him as his heir since simply by joining the Legion, Caesar would likely be of the opinion that the Courier understands what the Legion is truly about better than any of it's other members.

Ive always thought that a courier leading the legion along with all the factions and assets you can get to support you or control, especially dlc stuff, would make the most powerful faction in the wasteland. Itd certainly be an interesting reason to join ceasar's legion for a good character, as you could definetly do a lot of good with all that power as leader of the legion. Hell you could probably go a variation of the god king leader route if you wanted, using the think tank to make you an immortal cyborg along with pumping out advanced tech, then continuing house's dream and moving on to the stars. Also having in addition to the other things, the nukes from the divide, the madre's tech, new vegas and its bot army, boomer support, and any other factions you get to support you would certainly make you the most powerful fallout character in any game from a political, kingdom, tech, and power standpoint. Heck if you ended up moving east to take over and control the institute, youd have yet another uber tech group to make your own tech better than anyone elses. Honestly at that pount your only real threat are aliens

I love the comparison of the “myth” of the Courier and the other high ranking Legion. Because realistically, how else can you look at the courier? He or she single handedly change the fate of the Mojave wasteland, and it all stems from them surviving certain death. Killed in cold blood and left for dead in the works of a greater plot, Courier Six embarks on a quest for revenge that carries him through the entire Mojave Wasteland. Fueled by their wanton need to settle a score with the man who tried to kill them, the Courier bears the toughest challenges and endured the worst the Wasteland has to offer. Eventually this leads to them joining you with either major faction, and surpassing most of their peers in said faction. The Courier facilitates Robert House’s grand plan. They do what no one else in the NCR could do and pushed back the Legion. Courier Six joins the Legion and surpasses Vulpes as a spy, leads an army better than Lanius, and arguably shows themselves as just as good a diplomat as Caesar themselves. No matter which ending, the Courier accomplishes what literally no other unified force could I do, all because they were left for dead in a run down town. If that isn’t something straight out of a myth or saga, I don’t know what is. The Courier left for dead shapes the future of the wasteland. For better or worse, they do what no one else could.

The thing with the courier is that the courier is who you want them to be. They could be a druggy that just shoots and asks questions later or they could be a calculating mastermind of the Mojave. The latter would be perfect as a leader while the former will lead the Legion or Vegas to its downfall. If lets say one your courier ends up a leader of a faction...how would that turn out? Every playthrough is different. Enemies with some while allies with others, the courier is and isn't the heir to Caesar.

This seems more plausible when you consider that Ulysses, one of the foremost agents of the Legion and one of the few defectors we've seen from it, can either be swayed from his most resolute beliefs by the courier or defeated by him in combat even when he has time to prepare. Ulysses represents everything wrong with the legion. Betrayal of it's allies once their usefulness is done, the assumption that all who serve it have no more connection to their pasts. Whether eliminating the threat or de-escalating it, the courier is still his solution.

Great video. It was well thought out. If you do the Legion ending with Caesar alive it actually parallels with actual Historical events. Around 49 BC after Julius Caesar had conquered the tribes of Cisalpine Gaul he returned to the Roman Republic and to make a long story short became its de facto ruler before being assassinated. His nephew Augustus became emperor and the republic became the empire. This is where the Hegelian Dialectics come in. If you’re into history read more into this and get a better description than what I can in a KZbin comment. I find it incredibly fascinating. I love history.

Great video as always. I was wondering if you could make a video about Frumentarii. I know that you have mentioned them in a few videos but those guys are seriously underrated in the community. There are probably the best scouts and spies since the Great War. Before the Second Battle of Hoover Dam they managed to: *put their agent in a high-ranking position within NCR military (fuck, they actually managed to do that before NCR even learned about Legion) *form an alliance with one of The Great Families (which is something that NCR never managed to pull of despite being in a better position to do so) *sabotage Camp Searchlight turning it into a radioactive hell *form a secret deal with Van Graffs to provide Vipers and other gangsters with plasma weapons (this one ended badly but those weapons that were already smuggled caused lots of problems for NCR) *assimilate Twisted Hairs *lead tribals into destruction of New Caanan *infiltrate Mojave Express Also let's not forget that Ulysses was Frumentarii too. I really think that they deserve more credit than they are given.

Honestly it’s good to think about this as I finally am giving the legion a official run and sense I have the mod fpge installed I can witness the outcomes of the legion Honestly I’ jumped from supporting house to independence to the ncr and now I belive more in ceaser The ncr doesn’t realy speak to me much at all the rewards are unappealing there assasins are easy to take care off and rather basic compared to the legion assassins. The fact that the NCR is boring and impersonal used to be my biggest complaint about them but now I've grown to realize that's the point. At every turn, the game goes out of its way to frame narcissism and "main character syndrome" as the main antagonist theme. Just look at the factions. Caesar makes a whole society completely revolving around himself, not just his glorification but practically as well. A dictatorship that only functions through him and his competence. Mr. House is not much different, feeling completely removed from the society he seeks to create. Dropping the line "We don't have to dream about being important. We are." And then there's the Yes Man ending, that reads almost as a joke in this regard where YOU run everything with a literal yes man giving you everything YOU want. An even in the NCR itself, Oliver and Kimball make egotistical decisions that hurt their own cause. Meanwhile, Hanlon the only interesting character the NCR has, learns to let go and do what's best for the Republic. Overall, the NCR is purposefully boring. It has no central enigmatic figure, like House, Ceaser or Graham. It makes no effort to include or glorify the player. All they do is send a envoy to bring you to a haggard ambassador in a stuffy office. Because its a REAL government busy attending to millions of peoples needs. And House and the Legion only exist because of it. Whom did House make his riches? Where did Caesar get his education that he refuses to share with his own people? In a way, they remind me of the real oligarchies that exist in real life like Russia, Singapore and China. Who also coexist in a symbiotic relationship with the free world. And I think we can learn something from this game and apply it to real life. That sometimes the most boring candidate is what's best. The NCR Ending leaves all the characters and small factions alive and flourishing because that's what boring democracies do.

This actually makes the treatment of Joshua Graham make more sense. The tribals are a disposable means to an end but Joshua's failure in Caesar's eyes is more grievous due to his education. His weakness could have been more damaging to the Leigon's fundamentals and future as Joshua was Malpais Legate and therefore the heir to the empire should Caesar succumb to his tumor. In this way Caesar's seeking of the Courier makes more sense as well, the courier isn't just a broad tool and capable agent, they are replacing the co-founder of the legion and a key leadership and strategy roll in it's structure that is lacking in Lanius. Hell, the similarities the courier shares to Joshua are were probably the very things that made Caesar pause and seek him out.

This has always been my headcanon personally. The Courier is almost a demigod in how much sheer competence they have, blessed with unmatched strength and combat prowess, incredible diplomatic talent, groundbreaking intelligence and scientific understanding, and the devil's own luck. Caesar would need to be a moron to *not* try to get them to be the new leader of the Legion, they'd likely do an even better job than him. With the idea of the Courier becoming the successor to Caesar, it's easily the best choice for the future of the Mojave and Arizona, since now you've given total control over a vast territory to one of the greatest individuals to ever live. Wild Card would be a close second because it starts you off without all of the Legion's resources back east but you nonetheless get to be in charge if you so choose.

Damn, I never liked the Legion, I still dont, but this video actually brings up some really good points. It should also be mentioned that, regardless of what character you make the Courier, it is canon that he and Ulysses (although not at the same time) did deliver packages to and from both NCR and Legion territory, so while the Courier's backstory is unknown, he has at least encountered with and traded with the Legion before the events of NV. Whether this is because the courier is morally grey, morally bankrupt, or only delivered packages to try and keep the peace is up to the player. More confirmed canon regarding our boy, the Courier before being shot was a well educated or at least well experienced man, travelling nearly the entire west coast, from reno to vault city, up towards washington and down towards what would eventually become The Divide. Being shot in the head may have wiped the Courier's memories, but not their natural experience, their muscle memory if you will. And as Caesar explains, the Courier literally got double tapped, buried alive, and left for dead, only to be resuscitated from what very well should have been death, and with no memories of the land to fall back on and running on pure combat instinct, marched across the Mojave, marched into Vegas and killed Benny in his own damn casino. My point being, its possible after killing Benny (or possibly, even likely before) that Caesar did some digging up of who you were, and realized just how valuable you'd be to the Legion now that your mind was essentially a blank slate. You werent from Legion territory, and yet you didnt have the biases of NCR territory weighing your decisions about them either. tl;dr Caesar put together that you were both an extremely capable, but unlike Lanius, an extremely intelligent and resourceful person by nature, and didnt have any previous biases for or against The Legion as if you did, they left your brain back in Goodsprings, and already desperate for an heir, knew you were at the very least a potential candidate from the start.

Honestly, I've never paid close attention to the ending credits as I haven't done all the endings, nor have I ever sided with Caesar, I've only beat the games a few times in 6 years, typically siding with House, or NCR, I have played dozens of times but I'm a hoarder and it corrupts my saves often to the point I just stop playing, now FO3 I have beat so many times I know the game like the back of my hand, however I also face corruption for the same problems, but after this video I think in my current playthrough of NV I'm going to side with Caesar, and to get the achievement. Part of the faces on money thing in the Legion vs NCR is that they serve different purposes and have different traditions, in the style of their predecessors. NCR, like the old world US, doesn't put anyone aside from founding/landmark leaders on their currency, as a rejection of the monarchy tracing back to the revolution. In Rome, however, coins usually were used as propaganda for the current leader, being a way to spread their likeness that was far more reproducible that marble statues, and portable, too . this is why Barack emperors from the third century crisis have some likeness known, in coinage, despite sometimes only serving for mere months before being assassinated. I could go on, but the courier on the money isn't necessarily the legion valuing them more or less, but simply doing what the Empire did , and the republic before that

One little thing in my head that solidifies the whole heir to the legion thing is, in the Yes Man ending, General Lee Oliver says something along the lines of “I’d sooner spit on the grave of my dead mother than have some courier ‘walk the wasteland’ fuck talk down to me like that” sort of showing that in the “civilised” world of the NCR, they don’t respect that sort of thing, whilst in the Legion, an explorer, someone who has faced all the wasteland has to offer and comes out unscathed, well that’s downright respected, and when someone as possibly diplomatic as the courier with speech and barter 100 comes along who is also extremely experienced and can be looked up to, well let’s just say he’s a decent fit for the position of Caesar.

Honestly even if the courier wasn't intended to be Ceasar's successor, they'd probably be in a decent position to make a bid for the position regardless if they were so inclined(especially a male courier, given the Legion's biases). They'd definitely have a great deal of respect from within the Legion, possibly even enough to challenge Lanius, especially if Lanius started failing as a leader and the courier had more years of time to build prestige. Heck those years might even be able to be spent getting closer to Ceasar himself, matching wits with him and convincing him that Lanius isn't as good of a successor as the courier. We know from some of Arcade's endings that an intellectual equal to talk to is something Ceasar craves, so I think it's quite possible. And the courier is probably the only one that would have a shot at actually keeping the Legion together long term (not that I think they should stick around, but thats besides the point lol)

I think he wants the Courier to be the cultural change within the Legion. Maybe Ceaser did know that his empire will fall if he does not find a successor. He already had death hanging on him thanks to his disease and age, maybe this made Ceaser realize he is mortal and knows that his empire will fall without some kind of change. I think this idea began when he took Vulpes under him to see if there could be a cultural change, one that benefits the Legion in the future. Losing Joshua was already a loss in the Legion thanks to his experience and leadership. The loss in boulder city showed that the culture of the legion will end up causing him to lose, so he had to get someone different to get the job done. I'm not too sure when Vulpus got the position, but it's thanks to him that little lamplight became irradiated. Ceaser realized he needs someone to do the jobs that Vulpus got, but I think he knew Vulpus was no leader on the scale of The Legion. But this is me most likely looking too deep into it.
